The Dream is Dead

I don't know if it's just me or not but..  I just don't get enjoyment out of all of the mmo's that are out there to play now a days.  I've tried every game and I have usualy enjoyed them.   I just feel so bored and the magic died.  Everything is kinda stale and repeats itself.   I love mmo's a lot, just tired of feeling like its a punishment instead of a pleasure.    Meh...

I am in the same boat as you, though I think this year we'll see some badly needed new blood and different settings - PotBS, AoC, Warhammer, LOTRO... I think these are all steps in the right direction and will start to freshen everyone up a bit.  I am definitely glad I quit WoW.

Isn't this the opening to a Trent Reznor song?

not that i know of. and if it is please feel free to educate me.  I do believe The Dream is Dead might actually be a Type O Negative song title though.  If it is then sorry to any that get upset over it, not tryin to start ruckus.  Just complaining out loud

It happens. What works really well is getting rid of your computer for a year.  Get a new one then get back into MMOs. Brings the fun back for a while. Its what I unintentionaly did.  Had to sell my computer back in DAOC days (shortly after TOA release).   I came back into WoW releasing. Some good times. I might have to do that again. :)

    It is Type O.

Yeah, I've been seriously contemplating just quiting all types of games period for a while now.  Tried going back to the first few mmo's I got addicted to and made me fall in love with the whole genre.   But, It isn't the same now that I know what to expect.  So... I'll probably take your advice and disconnect the mmo life line from my vein....   maybe I'll even read a book again.

I agree, the genre seems pretty stale.

  • BizkitNLBizkitNL Member RarePosts: 2,546
It is indeed stale. We can only hope that the next batch of games will change that. Fingers crossed.

Agree. MMORPGS are not for us anymore, they are for teenage single player console gamer boys that want to show they cool gear and their leet skillz to others. Nothing more.

You might not believe this (based on the posts in the Vanguard section) but Vanguard has made and is continuing to make incredible progress and improvements.

I just recently resubscribed (really on a whim with a friend of mine I have known for years in EQ 1) and been astonished with the number of bug fixes, performance improvements, content (solo, group, and epic Quests) added, and so forth.  The game is many respects entirely different from release (but you will not really find this information in the MMORPG Vanguard section).

I'm looking forward to POTBS since I'm really burnt out on static MMO game worlds with nothing more than grind fests where the only goal is to get uselss gear. I like POTBS PvE, PvP, and economy content so far. It's a fully conquerable world and your actions effect the game world and I think they are desiging it to where you fill like part of a team(whichever country you choose)working toward a common goal which is conquest. I'm also looking forward to AoC and WAR and hopefully these games will bring something new and innovative which is much needed IMO.

    1.  No painful death penalties, therefore dungeons and such are not scary.

    2.  Soloable world, therefore less grouping and less socializing.

    3.  Linear quests lines that lead us from one newb area to the next higher one, therefore sense of wonder and exploration (and freedom) are shot.

Basically, the WOW design that makes gameplay tolerable has sapped all excitement out of gaming, and most MMORPG's are looking at WOW subscription levels and mimicking some of the WOW design.

We're in for some bad times.  I sometimes wonder if it might be best for hordes of us to go back and take over some server in one of these older better games.  Recreate the early days.

Time to go outside, enjoy your life.

I'm getting my motorcycle license this summer! Do the same? Better yet, take a class of some sort, learn a trade, take up puzzle making, model building, join a chess club, take a programing course at the local community collge OR learn another language (apparently Dante's Inferno is amazing in it's original Italian incarnation).

Point is, never do anything you feel is not worth your time. Life is entirely to short and can be filled with so many amazing things to deprive yourself of that. You are the only reason it isn't, you can't look any further than a mirror .

That's why I hope POTBs, AoC, WAR and some other games coming will break the mold of the WoW  design. And if these games coming out with hopefully some innovations and dynamics in game content fail to deliver then yes I fear the WoW design will be the wave of the future -- just different cookie cutter classes killing the local rat population in a static, bland, unconquerable world where your actions mean nothing and the only point is to get gear and show it off. More WoW games mean more interactive chat rooms to choose from for the leet tards instead of a true gaming experience.

Actually, that does sound good since no MMO or most all games for that matter aren't really interesting. It seems that gaming evolved by having better graphics, playing online with others, etc, but for some reason creativity went down the toilet. I still remember games going back to nintendo 1 that had more creativity than  the most demanding 3D graphics game garbage being made today. Maybe creativity will come back with some of the newer games coming out.

The market is absolutely flooded with mmo's right now, with so much more to come. If you can't settle on one, play a few. There is more than enough free trials, open betas, and free mmo's if you are like me and can only afford one active sub a month.

Since being chased out of SWG it was difficult to find a substitute. EQ and DAoC were great games but I could't go backwards, especially with how far the graphics have come. Have you seen the graphics in games like GW and LotRO? They are amazing! GW provided what I sought, for a while at least, but all the instancing wore thin, and arena combat in general just gets stale. So I bounched around from beta test to free trial. EvE is fun, but the advancement system puzzles me. I felt like I would be better off playing for five minutes a day for six weeks and then getting into it full time once I had progressed far enough, and that turned me off. Still, everyone should definately play the free trial. DnL had potential, if lousy graphics, but it quickly became apparent that hax and rollbacks were going to be much to commonplace. A game that long in development only to still have as much problems after the oft delayed promises, I had to pass on it, and I won't recommend it to friends. GW:Factions got me back into GW in a big way, and also provided me with Beta Key for AA. I recommend anyone who hasn't tried either GW or AA to give them a shot. I could very well be what you are looking for. In general I'm burned out on GW, but only cause I played it to death. I also got to beta test A Tale in the Desert III, a good solid sandbox mmo, if something of a dark horse.

After the whole DnL fiasco I finally gave WoW a shot. Warcraft 2&3 and Starcraft were some of my favorite games, but all I had heard about WoW since it launched was that there was no PVP and everything was camped to all hell. That turned out not to be the case. Toward the end of last year, I had a good amount of rl responsibilities cutting into my gaming time, and the BC came out, so it has only been very recently that I have had access to the level 70 content. It's alot of fun! I gank and grief to my black little hearts content, and when that gets dull I go faction farm or run an instance for gear. Exactly what I was doing in SWG before the fall. I think all the WoW hatred that gets generated on the forums is due to our natural tendancy of anti-conformity. WoW is the flagship mmo, and we the uber-geeks seek to rebel against the status quo. There are things about WoW i'm not crazy about, sure, but it will tide me over until the Next Big Thing comes along. BTW LotRO is kick ass, but all my friends play WoW, so I'm not in a position to switch right now. Every gamer should try our LotRO.

I am also one of the lucky ones in that I'm currently in the closed beta of one of the upcoming big titles. Getting into a closed beta is the best thing for a disgruntled mmo gamer. It isn't easy, but it can be done, let me offer some advice. All these upcoming titles have official forums, get active on them early. Apply for every beta that comes along. Trick out your computer as best you can so you meet their requirements. If you don't get accepted right away, be patient, flaming the devs on the forums about your lack of a beta invite is the quickest way NOT to get in. It took six months for me to get accepted into the closed beta I'm in now, and it was worth the wait.

WoW is making an insane amount of money, so of course the market is flooded with clones, but it isn't going to last forever, the technology in the gaming industry moves to quickly. Something will come along and knock it off it's pedestal soon enough. The mmorpg has SO MUCH potential and is just beginning to draw mainstream appeal. While STO may be a few years away, the potential of that title alone should be enough to keep you in the fold. AoC, PotBS, WH all look great, as do many of the other upcoming titles. Will the Next Big Thing wash your car, do your taxes, and provide sexual relief? Probably not, but I guarantee it will be something worth playing.

    Do what I've done:

Do a lot of looking at Indy MMOs.  Most of them never get past Beta, but they're major fun and normally have insane gameplay elements.  Much like Indy music, it's never polished or sometimes never coherant... but the people who make them truely love what they do and have a general love for gaming.

Not for everybody, but neither is Indy Music.

Would I be stoned and crucified if I added that you were essentially a whiny bunch of nostalgia freaks wanting their innocence back? Probably yes, which reminds me of why I didn't want to post this firsthand

I am 25, I've been playing computer games since I was 9, I am studying at university, I live with my girl-friend, and I LOVE games like LotRO or WoW ... Basically because I'm not a spoiled grown-old kid that wants the days of papermail and horse-riding back. Times are changing, Eye of the Beholder 1 was fun in 1992, Meridian 59 was fun in 96, DaoC in 2001, but times are changing, get a grip already, will ya?

Then maybe, just maybe it's time push back from the keyboard and go outside, since summer is just around the corner.  Experience the real world again! Lots to see and do, I assure you!

I dont  think the genre is dead just that maybe We spend too much time playing them? Why not go back to playing some standard Rpg or Fps and come back to MMo's when you feel you are ready cause other games out there still rock i just think we all get stuck in the MMo loop hole and cant seem to find a way out so we get bored. Time for a break i think.

If you're a old school player then I would suggest to wait for Darkfall.
    Check it out from www.darkfallonline.com

    Darkfall looks promising.

    Keyword: Looks.

But it's been in development for a million gazillion years now. We get a dev log from them once every six months or so saying that they are going to announce a launch date soon. I forsee another fiasco similar to DnL by the time DF is realeased.

Until the devs come out with something solid concerning launch, this one is in the vaporware category for me.

Like good Indy Music... indy MMOs take alot of research and looking.  Nobody actually advertises as "Indy" when making a MMO.

I have been researching for 2 days and found really only several that are in playable phases (4)... the info is on another computer, but I was planning on a well suited post on it's own when I completed my findings.

They're not the biggest or the most feature rich... but I'll be damned they have the best designs for certain aspects sometimes.  2 that I found, if they had more funding, would probably turn fair profits. :-)
