Bound to storyline?

Short of giving the game a try, how bound to the storyline is play?

Is it linked in a quest style but with free random play or are you locked into the storyline and have to follow it through to conclusion?

There are quests from the most obscure people to the most known (Strider), and none of them are required. Yeah the books do tend to give slightly better rewards due to the difficulty of them, but quests are not necessary at all in this game. The quests to follow the storyline is there though which is absolutely amazing.

No you are not bound to the story line. If you really wanted to you could grind mobs for all your xp all the way to 50.
