Well placed US sources have revealed to us that the StarCraft MMO will be unveiled at an upcoming Blizzard event on May 19 in South Korea
I'm hoping (and assuming) they are going to make a slightly different concept than WoW. It would be suicide to try and make a WoW clone when they already own.. well.. WoW.
I don't think it would be suicide. I think people would buy it up just like they did WoW. It is Starcraft, after all. People will eat it up like birthday cake.
============================= It all seems so stupid It makes me want to give up But why should I give up When it all seems so stupid
Realistically its what the sci-fi market needs, very little that is any good.
Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS) Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve
I think Starcraft MMO would be exciting I think but on the other hand is it the right thing for Blizzard to do ? That means if this is true they will have 2 MMO's out on the market eventually. To me that is telling your fans forget about WOW and come play Starcraft MMO because there will be no possible way people will be playing both. I think its a huge risk , if the Starcraft MMO is successfull then it spells the end for WOW. To think you will be able to maintain both mmo's and have 6 mill plus on each game i think is a huge pipe dream. I actually would prefer a World of Diablo but World of Starcraft will do just fine for me.

It's not really telling their fans anything of the sort -- it's merely another option for the marketplace. Believe it or not, even if 8.5 million people are playing WoW alone, there's still a good number of gamers who just aren't interested in that game but would play a starcraft game (like me : ' ) What will really happen is either of 2 things -- Blizzard will have 10+ million total subscribers, comprised of something like 5million SC and 5 Million wow (due to some defection to the other game) or 13million total subscribers comprised of 5 million SC 8 million WoW (because 3 million opt to double dip). Of course the numbers are made up but Blizzard still wins.
Personally, I can't see myself playing a sci-fi MMO. But I agree that it would be a very smart move for Blizzard to make. I'm actually hoping (against all odds, lol) for a WoW2, or maybe slightly more feasibly SC2 or D3 . Oh well...exactly two weeks to wait! *crosses fingers*
How fun, another grindfest MMORPG except we'll end up grinding zerglings and Terran Marines instead? I sure as hell hope not, the only sci-fi MMORPG's that I support these days are ones that follow the pre-cu SWG path and are fun, that's only a small few.
Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.
Even if they do go with the StarCraft universe, it is not sure that they will chose to make it a RPG, it can be an FPS or RTS or perhaps whatever-EVE-is. I guess we will have to wait and see.
since they ve said their next mmo is to be "next-gen" which means it will more then likely be on next gen consoles, im guessing it will be a sort of fps hybrid.

You missed the memo that nex-gen is a buzzword applied to anything related to videogaming not just consoles.
Blizzard started work on WoW in what, 2000? They released in 2004 and they started hiring staffers for mmo related work at the beginning of this year. If this new staff is for a new mmo and not to help with the creation of a better expansion for WoW (since they declared they want to make a new expansion every year) then we shouldn't expect a new MMO from Blizzard no sooner than 2010. Three years is doable for smaller mmos but there's no chance Blizzard is going to make a game smaller than WoW when it launched so the wait time will be longer.
I've been anticipating them moving Starcraft into the MMO realm for sometime now, seeing the success WoW has had, and the SF genre needs a boost, with E.V.E. getting kinda long in the tooth, something like Starcraft would, IMO, breath new life into the SF MMO genre. I loved Starcraft even more than Warcraft and if the news is accurate and Blizzard announces the development of Starcraft, you can bet that I, as well as those fans of Starcraft will be lining up to get into the first closed test as soon as its announced.
I think the MMO market is starving for new material and Starcraft MMO might just be it. What will be really interesting to see is how will the MMO consumer audience react when games like WAR and AoC are released, both top contenders to topple the WoW market. Should these games cause a stir with Blizzard and take away favor to WoW, a Starcraft MMO will not only bring in new customers but initiate a whole new phenomenon in the Sci-Fi area of MMO's.
WAR and AoC could cause Blizzard considerable damage and may urge them to release a new, bigger, and better expansion pack for WoW. Blizzard could slowly let go of WoW and not make any further considerable changes to the game (on a level of new expansion packs, etc.) and still make extreme profits by releasing a Starcraft game, let alone a new MMO.
A Starcraft MMO is a double edged sword. It could draw away customers of WoW, have current customers "double dip" and play both (atleast pay to play both), but yet snag all those gamers out there interested in Sci-Fi MMO's.
Regardless of what Blizzard chooses to do, a new Starcraft game is just what the world is waiting for.
Every MMO starts to get old and lose it's flavor eventually. Even WoW. I'm still amazed by those who stick around and continue to do the same thing over and over again in the same game. Eventually I just have to move on to something new even if it's just a little differnt. I don't believe anything needs to topple WoW. It will topple itself as time goes on and new games come out.
I think blizzard should make an mmo (or any other genre on game) with a new idea, warcraft and starcraft already have a few games based on their universe, its time for blizzard to start a new franchise.
Blizzard would be fools if they every made another game (from the big 3) that wasn't a MMO... And we know they're not fools so...
Personally I think starcraft is going to be a MMOFPS.
