The trouble with Target

kimmarkimmar Member Posts: 446
If anyone out there is pregnant and wanting to do a registry at Target, DON'T!!!

I just recently had a baby and did my registry at Target because one of my girlfriends recommended them.  She had a baby about a year and a half ago and said they did a wonderful job.  She told me that they were great about returns and everything.

Not the case with me.  I had to end up returning just 3 gifts.  They would not take them.  It frustrated me so bad because I had a total of well over $5,000 spent there from gifts people had bought.  And the returned items totaled a great big whopping $200!

I don't know how many other women are on these boards or men who have pregnant wives, but I asked some of the other girls who recently had babies at work and they said that Target has gotten that way with both their wedding and baby registries.

Just a bit of a warning.

For the record I'm not a woman =) however my wife and I went to target years back for the baby registry and it went great. I can confirm though that things have changed since then and are now much stricter on the once lenient return policy.

Exactly what my friends at work told me.  They said they used to do great but now they are like registry Nazis or something.

I feel like I got screwed.  And I can promise that I will not use Target for the next child I have.  And I'm trying to spread the word so that other mothers will know not to make the same mistake.

Target the store, people go in to register for gifts..They give Target a list and when people come in and buy stuff they check things off of the list in order to make sure nobody buys duplicate items.

Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.

Target's customer service may be sub-par, but they can catch petty thieves without any trouble.

Just a bit of a warning.

    Heh

Im a store Manager of a Target.

    First question is this:

Did you print out your Gift Registry Receipt from the Kiosk??  Or were the gifts not on the registry??

If the gifts were on the registry you could print it out. It's not brain science

    1. Walk to Kiosk

    2. Touch Kiosk screen

    3. Touch baby registry picture

    4. Touch "Print out Gift Registry Receipt list"

    5. Get print out.

    6. Walk to guest service with the print out

Being a Target employee myself, I just want to "spread the word" that there is always two sides to a story.

if you think returns at Target is strict now, wait on Jan 1 2007

No receipt no returns no exception.  If you paid for the item on a credit card, check, or debit card we can find it without the receipt. But if you dont have the receipt and you paid cash for it, you're screwed.

Is Target getting mean? Maybe. Is there a reason why they are doing this? Yes.

Target is sick and tired of people shoplifting from their stores and then have the thief return it for a giftcard or something else.  Besides, the new rule will only effect 4% of our legitamate customers.

I'll not be as cynical in my reply as you were.

    But here's the story.

My elderly grandmother wanted to buy us a few gifts.  She went to Target to get the gift and printed out the registry at the kiosk.  She bought us a few gifts from the registry.  However, she forgot to present the registry print out at the counter.  Therefore, there were gifts that she bought and that others bought after her.

It's a simple and honest mistake that could have been concluded by a simple fix.  The gifts were unopened and unused.

Now, I have to hope that people who bought the gifts have the receipts.  If one of them do not then I'm stuck with two of the same gifts and the people who bought them wasted their money.  That alone makes me ill to my stomach thinking someone was trying to be nice and ended up wasting their time and money.

And it's obviously not an isolated incident.  Like I said, Target is getting quite a reputation.  It didn't take long to hear them at work when I spoke about it to some others.

I just found it hard to believe that I go to Target, explain my situation, and get no help at all.  If the things are on my registry then it's obvious they were copied items.  Not to mention the $5,000 they had made should have prompted them to get over themselves about $200.

    well there you go

It was your grandmother's fault for not using the registry. It says on the registry that you need to give it to a cashier in order for it to be counted on your registered form. It's pretty easy to use the registry form and if she doesn't know how to she can easily ask for help...that's why the kiosks are right next to guest service. All you have to do is give the piece of paper to the cashier. That's it.

You can't really blame Target for your grandmother's mistakes.  Have her give you the receipt. If she threw the receipt away, again, it isn't Target's fault.

Yes, I am being VERY cynical because in real life at Target I have to deal with guests who lost their receipt, threw it away or their grandmother's screwed it up and yet it is our fault.  I once had a woman wish my guest service team member's mother would die because she did not have her receipt and the best we could do is give her the towels at the last sale price.

After having security throwing her ass out of my store and then banning her from it for eternity, I have lost my patience with some people who try to transition the blame on someone other than theirselves

Am I saying you're rude and unjustified? No. Not at all. But rules are rules.  If your grandmother screwed up the registry and never bothered to USE the registry you can't really blame Target for that.

Let's look at it from Target's eyes shall we?

Let's say Jane Smith comes in a creates a registry. Wow!! Congratulations on you getting married!! Welll....lets say she spends the next 5 months shoplifting shit. Anything from Ipods to Memory cards to bedsheets to underwear.  Anything Ms Smith can get her hands on she steals.

Oh but wait!!! Those items she shoplifted were on her registry!!! Because when she came in, she scanned everything she wanted to steal. Heh...unbeknowest to Target, she was never planning on getting married.

Enter Jane Smith seven months later. She got married. But OH NOES!!!! People gave her duplicates and forgot to use her registry. How unfortunate for her!!! No worries!!! We'll just scan every damn thing she stole back in and give her a big fat giftcard so that she can buy bigger things she could no so easily steal from the store. Ohh.. like TVs, bikes, etc.

That's why we have rules set up like that in our registry. If they forgot to activate the items on your registry and checked them out, Sorry.

And the above scenerio I gave you. It happens all the time on baby and wedding registries. That's why we have rules like that.

Yup, you have rules like that and I am now going to have my next registry somewhere else.

Look, I'm sorry that Target expects everyone to live in a "rules are rules" world.  If that's the way they want to run their business then fine for them.  But I like to go to a place that has a little more of a humanistic touch to it.  Someplace that can understand someone walking in with a big fat belly (obviously pregnant) and explaining that someone's elderly grandmother made an honest mistake.

Like I said, I had people spend over $5000.00 there!  Refunding the $200 to my grandmother (who rode up there with me and was going to use the money to get me something else in the store) would have been no problem at all.

And also like I said, reputations are a hard thing to shake once they stick.  And Target is getting one.  I have heard a few people say that they used to be good about their registry, but now they aren't.  If that's the case then you can bet people are going to go somewhere else.  Just like I am next time.

I felt horrible standing there pregnant with my grandmother and 3 unopened gifts simply asking for the money or credit to get something else in store and being told no.  If you think that is good customer service then I guess you can enjoy working at Target.  But I will spend my money and take my next registry somewhere else.

It amazes me that people have gotten to the point that common human errors are unforgivable.  There are other places out there that are understanding of situations.  And places where they realize people just make mistakes.  It's not a reason to say, "well there ya go" and lose a repeat customer.

yup. Rules are rules. And they were placed there for a reason.

Sometimes those rules will cause other people to shop elsewhere but if it stops more shoplifters than it does to piss someone off, then so be it. Plus, reading the receipt on the front and back of the receipt will ensure ANYONE on how to properly turn that merchandise back in for your money back.

Well, there is Wal*Mart. I heard they have some awesome quality stuff over there.

It's still a mistake. Your grandmom screwed up.  The rules aren't even that difficult to follow.  They were designed to be easy. Matter of fact, the rules are printed on front and back of every single receipt for anyone with a 2nd grade education or higher.  It's not Target's fault if someone disregard our policy. Trust me, we do have a humanistic touch.  I have gone to GREAT lengths and back to help customers with anything from a double charge, to a defective product, to a great in store experience.  However, when someone cannot follow a rule as simple as printing out your registry and then letting the cashier scan it... Target isn't responisble for hand holding.

Like I said, I had people spend over $5000.00 there!  Refunding the $200 to my grandmother (who rode up there with me and was going to use the money to get me something else in the store) would have been no problem at all.

Like I said, that is fine.  However, Target is growing by leaps and bounds.  This year alone we are opening 2000 stores and ever single existing store (over 2300 of them) all conduct in customer given surveys.  Out of our surveys, only 10% of negative.  90% positive rating is one of the best in the retail industry. Trust me, your friendly neighborhood Target isn't going anywhere. Why?

    • Target is cleaner than Wal*Mart
    • Target has better quality things than Wal*Mart
    • Target has better customer service than Wal*Mart
    • Target is the second most grossing retail store and the highest profitable retail store
    • Target has the highest stock ratio in the market and growing
    • Target gives more money than any other retail company to charities.  More than 5% of all of our earnings goes back to local communities and schoolw

I felt horrible standing there pregnant with my grandmother and 3 unopened gifts simply asking for the money or credit to get something else in store and being told no.  If you think that is good customer service then I guess you can enjoy working at Target.  But I will spend my money and take my next registry somewhere else.

And I bet your grandmother was embarrassed too. Again, you could have passed out on the carpet in disbelief. But the fact is, your grandmother did not correctly performed your registry.  If you got ripped off millions of dollars a year by "fake" marriage and baby registry people, Im sure you would have unbendable rules too. And those rules aren't even that hard to follow. Just keep the receipt or make sure you get that registry gift...well...REGISTERED.

I guess you're one of those in favor of zero tolerance then?

Personally, I like to look at each case as an individual case and judge it from there.  I also don't like the idea of a few nitwits ruining everything for everyone.  But if that's the kind of world you guys want, have at it.  I just hope you never get trapped in that kind of scenario yourselves.  It's a pretty scary and helpless feeling I'm sure.

I have to deal with this in my teaching too.  I guess you would call me a lenient grader, but like I said, I look at it on a case by case basis.  If I've got a kid who tries harder than someone else then I take that into consideration.  I would do that as an employer as well.  And honestly, I would avoid a company that did to Kimmar what they did.

Even the police give warnings to people.  I've gotten them before and I was very thankful for it.  Honest mistakes do not always make a person "guilty".  Nor do honest mistakes make a person deserve being treated like a liar.

Personally, I prefer Target.  But I can see Kimmar's side to this story.

However, I would imagine that Wal-Mart might be the same way.

I wonder if maybe a local baby store might have been a better choice for Kimmar.  I've always had better shopping experiences with locally owned shops and they tend to listen to their consumers instead of treating them like their part of a herd.

Good advice.  My sister said the same thing.  And that's what I plan to do next time.  I've got just the place in mind.  A nice little shop close to downtown S.D.

Thank you.  We just had the baby.  A healthy little boy.

The Target incident was a couple weeks ago.

And I promise, if you saw my grandmother, you would have a change of heart.  She's just a sweet little old lady (albeit forgetful) who made an honest mistake.  When we went in I was 8 1/2 months pregnant, about to burst.  When we got out to the car she started crying for making the mistake.  My heart was broke for her.

People do make honest mistakes.  It just made me so angry that nobody would listen to us or even consider who was standing there.  Blind policies tend to blind people.

Trust me, I know how you feel.  Except Im the one who always get the whipping stick in the face. But there was a reason why they came up with those rules as blind as they may be.

But I am glad your baby is doing fine. I remember the birth of my first born. I was petrified every single night while he slept. Just because he was so small

It's not just Target. Where I work (a pharmacy) we do not take checks for certain drugs anymore, because we're tired of getting stuck with bounced checks. Does it piss people off? You bet it does, but the cost analysis seems to indicate we save more money in avoiding bounced checks than we lose in business. It's not cold to be about the bottom line sometimes, it's just good business sense in a crooked world.

This is not to say the OP has done anything wrong. I am just not shocked that things are starting to get difficult at large retailers now.
