First impressions of LOTRO

Well this should be called vinceh trying to find anything to complaint about in lotro, and then just retract the last thing to come with a new one (nothing personal, is just my impression on the subject).

Man, UI's in every single mmorpg out there are kinda responsability of the comunity and BTW is the first release of the game, (if u played wow try to remember how the UI looked w/o the 24 mods u had on and running)... how do you expect that a game close to a month old will have UI customizations already?.... give it a lil time to let the modder's and ui'ers spring out and start making needed things.

About community... i must be playing in another server, cuz the'rs plenty of ppl asking and giving help around in mine, of course if u ask wher's bree, the prancing pony or the green way or how to get to lonelands...  i'm pretty sure noone will answer. why? well another intresting thing about this game is that you can actually find some usefull insigth in walking around seeing things, take your time and explore u'll find some nice landscapes and why not an elite though mob in a newb area heh.

Quests, very true, ther's a nice and smooth quest line everywhere u go with some history involved (let's say tks), just a tip, every region has it's own quests tied to traits and titles and some other surprises.

About the character customization, let's just say that thers a pretty large number of traits that can be upgraded to turn your character in about 10 diff combinations depending on the class, the class/race traits are the main player there. And well the kind of armours u'll have to see for yourself that with dyes and the craftmanship of dwarfs, elvens, or humans (not yet hobbitses) u can achieve several types of armor/styles. But even with that u have a point it should be more variety around, in lotro and every single mmorpg out thre in wich everyone is a clone of the other running around (heh, sad memories of ironforge population).

Oh and btw i think if u rigth click over the minimap you can customize things that appear there. ;-)

It's not about complaining.  Why would I make a thread and start talking about how good the game is?  If it was that good, I would be playing instead of posting threads.  I just like to bring up some issues I've experienced in the game to bring up discussion.  True, there can be many good things that can be said about this game, but those facts are obvious and bland.

Anyhow, I played alot yesterday.  The quest system is still attractive, probably the only thing that is urging me to play on.   I never worry about leveling up, because I know it naturally progresses as I do my list of 20 quests.

I think I see this game (finally) from a fine entertainment point of view.  This game differs from your popular MMOs like EQ2, WoW, VG, etc. in that it's more concentrated on keeping the player stimulated with the constant storyline instead of letting the player know there is only one thing on the agenda:  Level up as fast as you can, and the only way to do that is grind.  When you play this game, you feel as if you're part of a movie, playing along, and enjoying the hand-held ride.  This is where many people disagree with each other, but I believe it's all in the matter of preference.  If you are a nice relaxed player looking for a good adventure-filled game-play, you will be very pleased with this game.  But if you are looking for another WoW/EQ2 duplicate, you will not enjoy this, you will be bound by the lack of customization and "freedom" you have in the game.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this idea guys.

The embedded assumption, which is false, is that you must follow a determinate path.  That is simply not true.  Beyond the quest chain to leave your tutorial area, you're free to ignore any quest chain you wish.  If you wish to ignore killin' for traits, you may.  If you wish to exclusively craft, you may, although harvesting for a low level is tricky, but not at all impossible.  You should do your class quest at level 15, and you must do your journeyman quest to achieve jman crafter status.  Those are about the only requireds in the game.  I do not know why you have not seen this for yourself...

Ther's one thing i agree with you vinceh, it's a weird feeling, but it is true, u don0t have the urge to lvl up as ppl would do in other games.

Why?, mmmm, not really sure, but it migth be a mixture of a lot of things working together to actually present a complete gaming experience, for me, like i said before, i can log in a day and just walk for 3 hours straigth to see landscapes and find remote well known places, or just inmerse myself in a storyline quest, also i can go around taking mines and branches, talk to ppl around in bree, play 1 hr straigh of music ( i realize this is only for those who can rip a coherent note away from th einstrument, but hell practice make the master ;-D ), or get a fellowship together and try to survive the great barrows, among many other thing i can think of now.

It's a weird feeling not being pushed to the max lvl to *cough* "enjoy the game" *cough*, just to find out that the end lvl is just another version of grindig but with 39 ppl around you smacking bigger thing, and of course spending 4 hours nailed to a chair like if it was a job (so much for fun).

This game redefine the "ROLE" meaning of any mmorpg so far, and true, it's a game with 3 weeks of life from the release date, i think ther's much to come and expect of the game, the potencial of the whole "Lord of the Rings" history is just amazingly big, i just hope they buy the rigths of the whole related middle earth franchise as well so we can see the lands to the east past lothlórien someday, or the shores of harad... who knows perhaps somehow the lost lands of the elves, Beleriand.

And well... concerning the "freedom" you speak of, u can do wahtever u want in this game, if u like to grind *yiaaak* u can do it, the thing is vinceh, that the quests are so damn apealing in LORE, XP and fun (not to mention certain rewards) that noone can skip them.

    C'ya!
