List some metal bands that fit your description. None. Absolutely none. Never heard Metallica scream, nor I have I heard them create a song with only 3-4 powerchords. Actually they often use somewhat complex arrangements of aperggios as rhythm and usage of scales that fit the key and mode.

You really need to learn a thing or 2 about metal. Good Metal requires a lot of skill to play, and a lot of skill to compose. Anyone who knows anything just a bit technical about the composition of music would agree on this, even if they don't like Metal.

Even the lyrics of most metal is far more complex and poetical than most other genres. Draenor already listed Master of Puppets. Fantastic poetical lyrics being a metaphor on what drug does to you.

So before you spew your "takes no talent to make metal" out, make sure you know anything about musical composition.

The guy talking trash about metal probably listens to rap

Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.

    You missed an asterisk.

    Also of note

    VNV Nation
    Suicide Commando
    Combichrist

And since I watched American Hardcore recently, I've had a hankering for some of the stuff I cut my teeth on, and have been listening to the Misfits, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Cro-mags, Bad Brains, 7 Seconds, Minor Threat, etc.

That usually leads to me listening to Dropkick Murphy, The Tossers, Flogging Molly, and other celtic punk acts.

Yeah, I'm just going to claim this and Draenor's first post as my own here. Completely agree.

As for music, try some of these

Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed*(Get everything they've got, now), Godsmack*, Hatebreed, (If you're really into demonic screaming, I'm not, but some are), Killswitch Engage, Korn*, Metallica*(Black Album and Master of Puppets), Nonpoint (To the Pain is a really good album), Pantera, Zombie (Both White and Rob), Slayer, System of a Down, Tool*****(Tool=Win), And Trivium (Sounds a lot like Metallica, but in a good way).

Edit: Oh yeah, asterisks=Extra good bands.

    We barely remember who or what came before this precious moment;
We are choosing to be here right now -Tool, Parabola

Exactly. That's thing I want people to know. Metal, whether you like it or not, takes skill to create. Also agree on your comment about rap. It's the least technical genre of them all.

So before you spew your "takes no talent to make metal" out, make sure you know anything about musical composition. If you judge a genre by the worst artists, then any genre of music can seem less appealing to listen to than the sounds of diarrhoea echoing in a toliet bowl. I've certainly come across some terrible metal bands where you can't tell if the guitarist can even play because his sound is going through 3 fuzz boxes and is just a wall of distortion, and the singer sounds like he's doing a vocal impersonation of throwing up, but the good ones, even if the music might not be to your taste, have some very technically talented musicians in.

I don't like most rap I hear, but I would say the same rule applies. Some rap artists clearly display a great deal of talent and do some interesting things with the genre, others just put a standard beat on and shout rhymes which any educated 12 year old could improve on, giving most of us the urge  to prefix such rap with a silent "c", but as long as he can find two friends to shout every sixth word with him, some people seem to be prepared to pay money for such indulgences.

While that is true, you also have to look at the whole spectrum of "skill" within a certain genre. The most "complex" rap isn't as technically advanced as much other genres. That's why I can say, totally objectively, that rap requires less technical talent to compose.

That said, and even while I don't like rap, all technical isn't always good. When talking about guitar play, simple arpeggios on even the most basic chords can sound great with good lyrics.

I think proficiency is best displayed acoustically.

The guitarist, Bryan Sutton, is playing in Vermont on Thurs.
