Another Bored of the Rings Online

I recieved this game on Friday and immediately, I tore it out the case and slammed it into my DVD drive, anticipating the enjoyment that I ussually get from playing new MMO's. That brief period of bliss noobdom, the discovery of new races, new quests, new classes and a whole new world. Ive been playing for 3 days and already im feeling the boredom...

My first character is a Human Loremaster, having seen most classes are melee, I decided I would go less mainstream and follow something more unique then the 1000's of hunters called legolas and guardians called gimli, I click next and suddenly I get to my appearance and I am dumbfounded with horror...

Am I the only one who see's the tragic resemblance to DDO? Its like the devs couldnt be bothered to look at the complaints surrounding DDO's char creation system, but instead to ignore them and create a system where every jack tom and eric looks moreorless the same. Hairstyles, are exactly the same for each race and they are the same ones used in DDO, however a good variance, but what about face? I can change the shape, but not the eyes, the minor deffects that make us all different. Instead I have a char who looks eerily like Sean Bean.

I get into the world and im immediately graced by the indepth storyline that makes JRR Tolkiens Lord of the Rings the triumph that we recognise it as today. But wait, hold on, no Im not. I spawn in an instance with no idea why im there, how I got there, im just here as if my characters entire life has been a mere nothingness until this point in history. As the plot unfolds I found out ive been captured by Bandits, and I have to rescue a hobit.   ''BUT WAIT! Im not going to rescue anyone, im an evil wizard! Muah! Im going to kill you, kill the hobbits and convince the bandits to serve me in destroying the Free Peoples of Middle Earth...''   That plan was quickly screwed, as It dawned on me, the only possible stance you can take in this game is as a Lawful Good carebear.

And so my experience proceeds into a WoW like atmostphere of 1000's of solo quests. The storylines become boring after reading them the 12th time and eventually you find yourself resorting to skiping the storyline all together and just reading the golden writing. It doesnt help that the world is filled with immature kids (or atleast adults who act like them), who feel it is their duty to spam the /ooc channel with bad humor. Oh and dont forget the constant "THIS IS NOT WOW" comments.

So, what is good about this game... The world? I have read many posts highlighting the quality of the game world. Ive just arrived in Bree, and so far ive seen a Marsh, a town, a village, river, waterfall all surrounded by mountain walls the likes that NWN uses. Am I impressed? Not really, frankly Vanguard + WoW provided better atmostpherics and world visuals than this game. The world is in fact so uninteresting I find myself watching a movie while I travel from A to B just to ride over the predictable and uninteresting nature of the world.

And Combat? After my 12 hour stretch playing the loremaster I played the Champion and the Ranger and the combat is boring, unchallenging, and uninteresting. My interest might be peaked, if every sword slash was countered and reacted to in a realistic fashion, like a dance of blades between fencers. Sadly all you get is a flurry of blows a few grunts and screams and something dieing at the end of it... fun

At level 12 im hoping this game will develop. Im hoping that past the green hills of Bree, there are dark mysterious and interesting lands, with mature players, fun combat and exciting quests... Should I get my hopes up?

Bah! /end rant

    What a boring review.  3/10

You couldn't even come up with a different title than the one for the thread that's been on page one for a week?

The game definitely will get more dark feeling. 1-20 is the fluff stuff, chapter 11 book 1 is you first true feeling of the games direction. Also recommend doing "Ancient Story of Evil " quest as well to get a feel of how dynamic the difficulty curve is.

Also remember the Lore Master is more of a crowd control character, I would recommend trying a burglar as well, it is by far one of the coolest classes

Nothing would satisfy you .   You complain about the combat, when it has more challenging combat than any other mmorpg out there.  You have to really try not just sit back like wow, or eq2 .  Vanguard is not a mmorpg it's a bugged out program , not a mmorpg, everyone that plays it will agree, so don't compare it's world to vanguards.   Wow has had one expansion in almost 3 years, and they made over 10billion dollars so far.  ??  They take the money , but put hardly any content back into the game.   Atleast this game is fun , and has promise.  It has alot less bugs than wow had when it was released.  I agree that games shouldn't have over 50 quests total in them. Wow and Lotro or any new mmorpg did that wrong.  Quests take away freedom , by telling you what to do and how to do it alllll the time.   The characters look as good as wow , The items look and feel as cool as wow's items.  The community is a reflection of our society at the present time, I see no difference in the people on wow or on Lotro.   Yes 1 in 50 people is gonna be kinda weird , spoiled , and rude..   You have to see past them and try to find the people that your personallity more agrees with.    The deed system in this game and the itemization , and also the visual effects on the epic quest, make this game better than wow or any other mmorpg out there.  Even if it does have less content  at the moment.   The First Everquest is God and King and Creator of all Mmorpgs anyway.  These games are just somewhat clones to Everquest1 , "that has been ruined due to patching over 8 years."  I will enjoy Lotro with my wife until something BETTER comes out and Wow , Vanguard , EQ2 , are not more fun than Lotro.    Wow is good but everyone has the exact same things, and has nothing to do, no new races or classes with 10billion dollars in 3 years ??? thanks lol later yall.

No, you can't play an evil character in this game -- other than your monster character.  This is LOTR -- LOTR is told solely from the perspective of the "good guys" and it's the story of the triumph of good over evil.  That's the story that you are playing in LOTRO, not the evil side of things, because that perspective is completely absent from any of Tolkien's works ... everything in them about evil is written from the perspective of the good, and never vice-versa.  No "sympathy for the devil" in LOTR.

Yeah the game is the best evar!!!!.......

Thats why all these mooks are hanging around on these forums desperately trying to defend this crappy game which is completely unworthy of its IP, instead of playing it.

You can say what you want but this game is WOW 2 with less originality and that aint gonna change.

Just a quick correction: The only areas completely surrounded by mountains like WoW or EQII are the new player areas. They have one way out and that's it. After you finish the newbie stuff, there is no area that I have found that you can say is surrounded by mountains. The marsh is not surrounded by mountains, you can walk out in any direction. Combe is surrounded by cliffs, but you can actually walk around through Bree and get back to Combe on top of those cliffs, so it's not like they are there to keep you penned in, it's for the look.

As far as visuals, I think LOTRO is probably the best looking game on the market right now, with the notable lack of character customization.

Thats a relief to hear! Mountains make me feel boxed in, that the world is limited.

Blimey! This reply is so ignorant, unfactually opinionated and WoW negative, I dont know where to start.

I agree with the OP. Haven't seen much to recommend this game except as a very, very  limited VR experience for Tolkien fans. It will be interesting to see what even they are saying after a couple of months.
