Nvidia's Human Head Demo

I want to see stuff like this in my games.  The only down side I imagine is that it must take a long time to create models like that.  Adding even more costs to MMO production.

Looks good It's not that hard to make them, people have been doing it for a long time in the cgi world. The problem is just making it all run in realtime with more than 1 head and tons of other stuff going on at the same time.

All in all the game industry does exactly the same stuff as the cgi industry, just in realtime and a few years later. Look at movie effects etc today, and you will see the stuff that we get in games in some years. A example is subsurface scattering, been done for quite a few years in cg, starts to move into the realtime world of games now.

Crysis, is starting to get quite close to detail levels like this. Not all there yet, but pretty close, and it looks good.

That's amazing. I wonder when computers will be powerful enough to run these kinds of super-detailed worlds.

A pixel shader is a pixel shader, doesn't matter you run it on a Ati card or a Nvidia card.

And no I can't link you a video. Since that head was made by Nvidia. They won't run it on a card from the competition. But it could just as well be running on a Ati card.

The question is if they can then realistically cause that head to smile, blink, show emotion, etc.

Although gameplay imo is superior to graphics, it'll still be quite thrilling the day computer games look like real-life.

I agree with you about gameplay.  Except for one thing.  I find that there are three elements that are equally important in a game being just awesome.  They are gameplay, graphics, and sound.  A lot of people never mention sound, but I think it can make a game just as immersive as the graphics.

I have recently started playing Lord of the Rings Online, and the nature sounds that I have heard so far are amazing.  I was sitting playing the other night and just stopped for a minute and closed my eyes.  I could hear things off in the distance and rustling up close that was fantastic.  Completely awesome.  I remember hearing this wailing way off in the distance that sounded like some kind of yeti or something.  It really gave me the chills the way it was presented.  And I am playing a minstrel.  His shout that he does is very cool!

But to me those three things are equal in importance.  And when they come together just right, it's completely wicked.
