My review so far

NetspookNetspook Member UncommonPosts: 1,583

I've been playing VG for a couple of weeks now, I'm a lv 23 human pally. This is my review of the game so far.

World:

The world is huge. I would suggest they removed 75% of it! Why? Because most of it is empty!! You can run and run without seeing any NPC or mobs. At first this huge world is impressive, after a while it gets annoying, since you spend most of the time running long distances. Yeah, I do know about the different means of transportation, but seriously, it doesn't change much.

Graphics:

I was impressed when I started playing, but not anymore. This is because there are no variations. Every place looks almost the same. This gets extremely boring in the long run.

Sound:

Ok. Not bad, not good, just ok.

UI etc.:

The interface works just fine, but there are some issues they should fix - I'm surprised they haven't done it already. My pally icons (finishing attacks, etc) are placed above the initial hotbar. You can add more hotbars, but the one on the bottom left is unusable because it gets BEHIND the pally icons! There are similar other such issues, like the compass getting behind buffs, etc.

Quests:

I like how they inform which quests are meant for groups or small groups. But there are too few quests in this game. At lvl 23 I'm having problems finding new solo ones. Some solo quests really suck. What the hell is fun about killing 50-100 of the same mobs??? And some quests are very annoying since there are few of the correct mobs to find. I really enjoyed the URT (correct name?) quest series, though.

Crafting:

This is extremely boring. What you do is keep on clicking on icons till your fingers bleed if you wanna progress in crafting.

Harvesting:

This totally lacks content. Getting 1 (yes, one!) new plant to be able to harvest every 100 lvls you gain, that's stupid.

Diplomacy:

I hear Sigil has big plans for this feature. I heard about player controlled cities in the future where Diplomacy would be a very important feature. That would be my only reason to gain Diplomacy lvls, cause this is, imo, the most boring of everything I've experienced in this game.

Important: make sure you do the starting quests for Diplomacy. I deleted one of the quests by accident, and had a hard time finding where to get it again. If you don't do these quests, it seems you can't progress in Diplomacy at all. Not sure about this though, but I wasn't able to find ANYONE I could play against, since I had too low lvls, etc. Btw, Diplomacy is a card game.

Community:

The players who are online, seems to be very nice and mature, but most of the times I wanna shout: WHERE THE HELL IS EVERYONE?? Getting groups in this game, is hell...

Support:

Does this exist? I mean in-game. I once tried /petition, and got no response in over 7 hours. I won't try again.

Bugs:

Nothing serious, but several annoying ones that happens frequently. Ex: falling through the world - you will automaticly be teleported to the place you logged in, which can be far away from where you now were... Hint: DON'T log off when standing on stairs etc. It's a good chance you'll be UNDER it when log on next time. And you will have to tele/recall out of there...

Overall:

Killing mobs and doing quests are actually fun in this game, except those insane grind quests. There are several other features I really like, and I'm excited about housing and ships. But there are LOTS of issues with this game. If they improve it, and I mean really improve / add content, I'll still be around, if not it's goodbye.

Only want to add you are able to move them around, goto "settings"-"Interface" select "layout" and move around how you would like them or how they actualy should be placed  see clip : http://img531.imageshack.us/my.php?image=changelayoutku3.flv did the clip with my monk so had no pet-hotbar but it works with everything, done so with my Ranger and Necromancer.

To be honost didn't really like the review, sure i respect your opinion afcourse, but it seems you know to little about the game for a review.

And if he had said, "I bought the game and played my dwarf warrior to level 5, this game is awesome you should buy it", you would have said that you agreed completely and said it was the greatest review ever.

Ok, it was noobish of me not to have figured out about interface options, I admit that, but seriously: you shouldn't have to configure that yourself to avoid bars getting under each other, etc. That should not be needed at all.

    Except from that:

WHY do I know too little about this game, in your opinion, to write a review? Did you miss the "so far" in both the title and the first paragraph?

I have NOT rushed to lvl 23. I've spent lots of hours on crafting, diplomacy, quests, exploring, etc. The fact that you disagree with my comments, does not disqualify me from being able to have opinions.

Like i said i respect your opinion but still feel you don't know much about the game. Did you read my comment about "how they actualy should have been placed" so thats agreeing with you.

But to make it clear i was expecting a review, but you just made a "your opinion of the game" and there is nothing wrong with that and then its a good read. It's just not a review where you have not covered the things you spoke of or did some research.

So again it was a nice read if the topic was called for example" my opinion about the game" or something like that. I also made no comments about anyone rushing , but at lvl 23 i would have thought you would know bit more about the game, saying everything looks the same without explaining what looks the same as i keep seeing different locations with each their own feel and look. Just a few things that would have made this a real review instead of just your opinion. And again before some of the lower IQ "haters"( not you but people like Kairebare that really does not understand things that is said) jump onboard. There is nothing wrong what you have written, but personaly i feel its not a "review" but mainly a opinion. And thats my opinion. Also i'm not here to tell that i could write a perfect review cause i probelbly can't make a decent review as reviews should be.

Translation, if OP said, "this game is awesome, and everyone should sub, can I have some more Kool-Aid Brad?", then you would have hailed him as a knowledgable and fair reviewer.  But since he had a couple gripes he's obviously a dumb nub who dosen't know anything about the game and is just offering an opinion.  Newsflash, reviews are opinions!

At first this huge world is impressive, after a while it gets annoying, since you spend most of the time running long distances. Yeah, I do know about the different means of transportation, but seriously, it doesn't change much. Personally the only empty areas Ive stumbled across are the player housing plot areas, many of which only have a few houses up atm and a few under construction. I may have just not seen the areas you have been through though, can u recall anywhere specific that was lacking content/mobs etc?
    Graphics:
I was impressed when I started playing, but not anymore. This is because there are no variations. Every place looks almost the same. This gets extremely boring in the long run. I tend to disagree. Do some of the CIS quests, then jump over to Thestra and do some TK missions. I found those two areas to have a very different feel, with different environments, mobs, atmosphere etc. Different again is, for instance, the bamboo jungle outside Lord Tsangs Tomb dungeon, with a House of Flying Daggers feel. I would guess at 23 youve seen more than 1 continent, so I wont insult your intelligence by advising you to travel to different continents...I guess variety is in the eye of the beholder.
    Sound:
Ok. Not bad, not good, just ok. I agree.
As other posts have mentioned, this is customizable, and there are a lot of UI mods that you can grab if your unhappy with the default. Ive trieed a few, but personally really like the default. I agree a little more polish could have been applied here at launch.
Aye, the solo quests are harder to find as you get into the 20s. I mainly group (and imho I think Vanguard is suited towards groupers) so I cant really advise you on where to find some more solo quest lines. The Unicorn and Shadowhound quests are quite solo friendly for the most part (about 25ish), but be warned they are very long...
    Crafting:
This is extremely boring. What you do is keep on clicking on icons till your fingers bleed if you wanna progress in crafting. Well, when your adventuring you also click on buttons if you want to progress! Persoanlly crafting is one of my favourite parts of VG and the crafting community is really great imo. There is a serious time investment required to become an end game crafter, but that is required to make crafting at all meaningful. With some minor changes to stat balance (and of course fixing the NT gold dupe) I think the VG economy will be extremely well balanced and will attract crafters from far and wide. Work orders (market not saturated with exp items), item sinks for both dropped gear and crafted gear and upgradeable weapons/armour along with player built vehicles/housing make crafting a deep and rewarding sphere imo.
    Harvesting:
This totally lacks content. Getting 1 (yes, one!) new plant to be able to harvest every 100 lvls you gain, that's stupid. Well, yes and no....
As you progress 100 skill points in 1 of your 2 harvesting specialties a new tier of specific resources is opened up.           The vast majority of nodes you come across for that tier will be common nodes (ie tier 3 stone is Sandstone), but when harvesting this tier you now can find another 2 common gems (Amethyst and Jade I beleive?), along with rare stones (moonstone and another one) plus the nodes themselves can spawn as a rare resource (Soapstone, worth lots of cash ) or u might get lucky and harvest an Ultra rare resource from that tiers nodes (ie marble, worth insane cash ). So as you get to a new tier in a specialty, even though there is 1 base resource, there are more ancillary harvestable resources.
    Diplomacy:
I hear Sigil has big plans for this feature. I heard about player controlled cities in the future where Diplomacy would be a very important feature. That would be my only reason to gain Diplomacy lvls, cause this is, imo, the most boring of everything I've experienced in this game. Im not into diplomacy myself, ill take your word for it.
Important: make sure you do the starting quests for Diplomacy. I deleted one of the quests by accident, and had a hard time finding where to get it again. If you don't do these quests, it seems you can't progress in Diplomacy at all. Community:
The players who are online, seems to be very nice and mature, but most of the times I wanna shout: WHERE THE HELL IS EVERYONE?? Getting groups in this game, is hell... Agree and agree. Nice community...can be difficult to find groups at times.
    Support:
Does this exist? I mean in-game. I once tried /petition, and got no response in over 7 hours. I won't try again. Never petitioned myself, but from what I hear the response times are deplorable. Very unfortunate.
Type '/stuck yes' to get out of that situation if it occurs. Falling through world happens to me every now and then and /stuck yes works there too.
    Overall:
Killing mobs and doing quests are actually fun in this game, except those insane grind quests. There are several other features I really like, and I'm excited about housing and ships. But there are LOTS of issues with this game. If they improve it, and I mean really improve / add content, I'll still be around, if not it's goodbye. I agree that the grind in VG can be alittle excessive at times,. Housing and ships are great, I promise you you'll have a huge grin when you drive your first boat up the Qa river at sunset . The stream of new content has been fairly consistent imo, and importantly there are now raiding sessions being planned on the test server.

And another thing Reklaw, where do you get off saying a guy doesn't know much about a game because they are only level 23 and obviously haven't spent enough time in game?  On the 21st of last month you stated in a thread here that you were level 15, so how high can you be?  I don't care if you've spent 8 hours a day taking screenshots, chatting, or just jerking around in Khal, you have no business telling someone who probably is higher level than you that they don't know enough about the game to have an opinion.

just wanted to comment on the travel times, if you know what and how to travel effective, it's kinda like the trick for travelling fast in morrowind, you should like me be able to travel across the entire kojani kontinent in 5 minutes, yes 5, and that without spending a single copper coin

    Knowledge is Power!

So what are you talking about KairBare, You should really learn to read, i was not attacking the OP i was mainly stating my opinion on what he wrote, this is a forum and people are here to discus things, but it seems you have no idea how to discuss as you keep coming back with more nonsens that really make no sense and you keep trying to find something but again REAL FACT always will proof you wrong.

Dude, are you high on crack? Grind Crafting your favourite? Attracting crafters from far and wide?

YOU promise a huge grin for something that isn't in the game (and based on past history of game devs won't ever)!

You can actually go into your U.I. settings, press the "Layout mode" button, and move things around to wherever you want them. This way, nothing will ever overlap. You have to remember that every class is different and has different hotbuttons so it's difficult to have one layout that is perfect for every class.
