I'm in the same boat. I wanted to try the game, but couldn't, even when I had a key.
A buddy key isn't a trial key. A buddy key is just that: a key that you can give to a buddy that is living close to you. You can't download the client anywhere from the offical site. If you give the key to your buddy, you're supposed to lend them the disks as well so he can install the client. The other alternative is to illegally download the client from BitTorrent, and that was a route I wasn't willing to go.

hmm, sorry to say this, but it's just silly. Even if you'd get a client download with your buddy key, why do i have to have a buddy already playing this game in first place? Or even post on forums begging for someone's buddy key... I played lots of mmorpg's and there wasn't a single one that i'd buy it before i try it. No way i'd pay 50 or so bucks for game that i might not like. Oh well, i guess lotro has alot of subscribers already, so they don't have to worry about a regular free trial yet...
Most games do not do a free trial right after release, they had open beta still going only two weeks ago so they are hardly going to have a free trial allready!
maybe once the game has been going for a wee while they will have one but i dont see the point in them having a free trial right at release!

if you're from the EU you can get it, legally, from fileplanet
And as for the US, i'm pretty sure there are some out there, just google "LOTR online us client"
we dont get to trial singler player games before we buy them. I dont see the world complaining.
If you like middle earth, relatively fast but somewhat tedious (lvling is quest based, grinding gets you nowhere), a good story, good graphics, hundreds upon hundreds of quests, and a really good community, and not so much pvp then youll like it. Go get it : )
Oh and if youve always wanted to play your own instrument in game!

There are demos for single player games and you don't pay monthly fee for them. I see buying mmo's as an long term investment, if its good anyway.
