OMG best idea EVER.. in the Starcraft MMO you can play origial STARCRAFT vs people and then give some rewards or something for being nasty !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

It would be like a battleground in WoW.... where you get randomly matched vs people and you have to beat them 1v1 or 2v2 or 3v3 in the RTS version of Starcraft we all know and love. I would play the Starcraft MMO just for this feature !!!!!

I don't know how it will work but I wouldn't get my shorts too much in a bunch.

PS aren't all the FPS games free to play online? I don't know how well a MMOFPS would work. Planetside wasn't uber successful and twitch games have a hard time with the server pings. This is why you see small servers for FPS battles and not 1000+ servers like in MMO's.

    Anyways.... Only time will tell

Without warcraft 3, WoW would have not had the impact it had... all was ready for it when it came. Making a Starcraft MMO now is a bit odd, in my opinion. Not because it would go against WoW but because the Starcraft franchise is not fresh and alive in nowadays gamers (beside koreans... but i doubt even them care much for the story at this point). Do a Starcraft 2, craft an epic story like Blizzard knows how to do... make old characters and new villains come out of the closet and you will have people talking and get excited about the STORY, not just the game, once again. Have the story of the RTS have a sort of conclusion that leaves many questions and possibilities, like Warcraft 3 did.
THEN, release the Starcraft MMO and see the scores of people just loving to throw bills in your face. Make it a MMO RTS/FPS hybrid so you do not go against WoW too much and you are set to become the most succesful company on the planet ever .
Agreed 100%. Blizzard has always been the company to choose the wisest business decisions.  This makes perfect sense.

I don't know. I wouldn't mind a SC MMO. I'd Play it. Blizzard looks like one of the most successful gaming companies. That boom started off of one game (WoW). They look like they can handle it.

Reveal it as a finished product?  Or as some "MMORPG in progress" to be released in two or three years?

Starcraft has a pretty fresh story.  Warcraft 2 didn't so Warcraft 3 was required.  Most people have played Starcraft.  It's in our blood.  It's the reason me and my friends got our bachelors in computer science, because of the cool map editor, and the zerg and the protoss! (too much excitement)  Warcraft 3 and wow needed to be released because they were fading.  Now's the time for Starcraft.  It would be a critical miss if Blizzard didn't release a Starcraft something right now.

Diablo 3 on the other hand would be the biggest upset.  When Diablo 2 came out, it was dated, boring and there were better games at the time like Dungeon Siege.  and there really is no story to Diablo.  It's highly Satanic.  (hence the name Diablo) so you are constantly fighting a new type of demon? (we've seen all this in Warcraft already) and most people don't sit right when questing through zones like the plaguelands.  They are just too dark gloomy, and evil.

Koreans don't like FPS's, so I think that could be highly unlikely that the Starcraft MMO will be an mmofps, but that would be badass.

Some guy posted some quotes from blizzard.  How bout the article on gamespot where Blizzard posted some jobs for RTS programmers.  That opens up that window.  Blizzard also stated that if they do release another game it will be like nothing we've ever seen before.  That means it's highly unlikely that this next game will be just an mmo.  Which could mean some kind of RTS elements to it.  Most sci fi games that have come out are always trying to do something with space.

WHAT WE"VE SEEN SO FAR!!!! (from personal experience of sci fi mmos I've played)

Earth and Beyond (EA game that sucked) - You leveled your ship up in space and could actually take your awful looking character out of the ship into a base that was a replica of every base, but it gave you slightly more immersion that other sci fi games.

EVE Online - You fly through space in your ship.  It's more of a flight simulator that also is an mmo, written in python.(very simple mmo implementation) Cant get out of your ship.

Star Wars Galaxies - Leave it to Varant(Sony bought them so they aren't that anymore) to come up with good ideas, but not quite pull them off.  You can move through space in your ship and walk on land with your dude. (great concept, need to see this done well)

Anarchy Online - No space at all, but invented the personal instancing system.

    FINAL PREDICTIONS

Starcraft Universe - Four races, Terran, Zerg, Protoss, Draenie (kidding probably Xel-Naga).

Combination of WOW and RTS.  You can play a single dude that is your main and he can manage different other characters, like robots and hired units that maintain things.  There are ships where you can move into them and proceed through space as well as inside your ship.  There are mineral fields and collecting objectives in space much like the "jobs" in WOW.  There have to be pvp rts elements to the game closer to the original Starcraft with the characters you have created.  I think this is the one thing Blizzard is upset with in their construction of WOW.  They don't feel like the pvp is a very action packed environment like the original Starcraft is.  WOW really is too personal in that you control one dude and fight with a thousand others and lose your significance as a player.  However you do want character maintaining to be an important part of the game.  It will be exactly like Blizzard has said, "Unlike anything we've seen before".

    Just another WoW clone.

Eventually people will get bored of cookie cutter games.

I dont' want to get my hopes up.

If they do succeed at making a good non "WoWclone with SC textures", I will probably pick it up.
why do so many people call new mmos wow clones. WOW IS A CLONE i know thats hard to belive but the basis of the game came from stuff like LOTR and D&D and warhammer. art was from warhammer which btw predates warcraft at least 10 years i belive. and as for ui EQ created the standrd UI. wow just took the best of everything and made it easy as a causul mmo. so what most mmos are based on stuff like EQ and wow y the hell change a good system. what sets a game apart is not the ui its the features and story. i think a starcraft mmo would be great cuz the mmo world is lacking their since nge in swg.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

The game theyre making is deffinently an MMO. If you go to the "jobs" section on Blizzard, the open opprotunities are like "Lead MMO Map builder. Lead MMO Quest maker" and stuff of that sort.

It would be really interesting if they break from starcraft / warcraft / diablo though. Make something completely new. I think they have a right to do that.

Despite the need for MMO workers for Blizzard, it doesn't exactly mean the starcraft game will be an MMO... but i'm also willing to put my cash down on the idea that it will be. Look how popular it is on the forums here.... How could they be so blind as to not see what an opportunity this is? Its Starcraft Online. You can smell it.. and if in some way it isn't?

    Dang.

I am not sure what it is going to be like. I am pretty sure it is going to be Starcraft related. Maybe not a true MMO but not a free online game either unless they changed the statement that they would not run free servers again.

    NOT AN MMO!
  • AmalaricAmalaric Member Posts: 480

I'm just sooo dissapointed at Blizzard right now.

I guess that we can't count on them to bring anything new to the MMO world.

I have big hopes on Funcom and Mystic, they will show Blizzard how you make a top notch MMO.

That they decide to reignite the RTS genre and oblitarate another genre?

That they are a compnay that actually fulifill what they set out to do, and not relase subpar games?

    Yes, yes, yes and yes.

How do you know that this game wont be subpar to its predecessor?

And Blizzard has released subpar games in the past, a game called the Hobbit released for the SNES in the mid 90s.

Actually it was not subpar, it was quite crappy.

Don't be too hasty. This person might have a connection. Allthough it wasn't an MMO it was SC and they had been working on it a few years. mistake maybe due to chinese whispers or blizzard employees only being told its a SC game not whether its MMO/RTS or maybe it was a friends, friends, friend's cousin's granny. Either way it prolly was a complete lie, tis suspicious tho.

  • They could be working on it in without telling anyone. Starcraft 2 has apparently been in development since Frozen Throne, that means they've been doing it without telling while working on WoW and Burning Crusade.

I know this because I work for Blizzard. I get all the inside information. Next comes a Starcraft MMORPG, then a Lost Vikings MMORPG ftw, then a new Blackthorn game. Now, I'm not a programer or anything technical over here at Blizzard. I don't work with the computers or anything, I just get to see the stuff as I do my job. SC: II looks like it may be close to being finished.  Blizzard is a large enough company to work on multiple projects.  I wouldn't be surprised if they were working on a Starcraft MMO to follow on the heels of SC: II.  Just like WoW and WC: III.  So while the OP was wrong about what was announced on the 19th, that doesn't mean he was wrong about Blizzard working on a SC MMO.
