About buying the game

Hey, I'm thinking about starting LOTR and what I have experienced in most games is that they make you buy the retail game, and it says somewhere that there is 1 free month included in the box, so I buy the game, go home, install the game and next thing I know I'm forced to enter a time card serial in order to activate the free month.  Then I have to go back to the store, get a time card and come back home.  After installing the game, I realize I don't like it and now I have a bunch of months of paid game time that I don't want.

My question is, in LOTRO, do I need to buy a time card with the box so I can start playing, or can I just buy the retail box and start playing for a month and see if I like it?

All you have to do is buy the game and you can start playing for the first month.

Although I wouldn't really call the first month FREE since you just plunked down 50$ to buy it.

In regards to game cards once you buy them and punch in their code that's it.  No refunds.

Either you play or you don't the time is yours to play or not.

Be aware though that when you activate the game all MMO companies ask for credit card information right away.

They want to know how you are going to continue to pay for the game past the first month.

Usually people will supply the company with their card and if they don't like it then they cancel before the first payment is due.

Thanks for the reply.  So... if I am unwilling to give Turbine my credit card at the beginning, I have to buy a time card, or does the comment:

    not apply to LOTRO specifically?

Not sure how turbine works - for codemasters you need to select a payment method (enter CC or a GTC)

If it really bugs you that much just enter your CC and then cancel it immediately (you'll still have the rest of the month but you dont have to worry about forgetting to cancel it).

Sorry to be frank but why is this a big deal? I pay my phone and car insurance on CC. I have given my CC to every gaming company and *NEVER* been overbilled. Hell - My student loan is taken from my wage before I see my wage slip.

Well... I don't have a credit card at the moment, getting one in a couple of weeks (turning 19 soon).

What you need to be asking is....

Would some kind person give me thier Buddy key so I can try this game before having to pluck down $50?  I am very interested, but fear spending money before knowing if I like it.

Ask that.  then you will most likely get a key sent to you that will allow you to try the game for 10 days free before you decide.

Yeah :( CM use paypal so you can setup a bank account or use Solo (16+) but I spose turbine is a bit harsher.

I didn't know I there was a buddy key system in place.  If that's the case...

I'm willing to trade my 14-day free trial of City of Heroes for a 10-day free trial of LOTR.  PM me please.

Also, if I get a 10-day free trial of LOTR, can I just download the game from somewhere?  And if I decide I like it, do I still need to buy the box to continue playing it or can I just buy a time card and skip the box?

No officially supported download but if you do some digging you can find one.  My friend lives across the country and didn't have any trouble finding the download. (He made it into the 2nd day of his buddy key trial before buying the special edition. haha)

Keep in mind, the downloads typically don't include the Very High detail textures (so the graphics may "suck") and often won't include the in game movies, which is also a very nice feature.  So keep that in mind.
