Yo~
I've read a few threads about lotro and noticed that people class this game as a "MMO for casual gamers"
I don't have a problem with a so called casual game, the easier it is for players to pick the game up and go without a steep learning curve sounds good, but anyway whats "worrying" me is that because this game has been branded as casual, does this mean that for players that enjoy a good 5-6 hour session of playing miss out on depth, game immersion and "rewards" so to speak?
Ive got the game but waiting for my new parts to arrive for my comp, which should be comming tomorrow or the day after and i just wanted heads up incase im in for a disappointment. Appologies if my question was worded badly but im sure you all get the jist
big fan of the lore btw ^_^

Whats up with everyone being afraid to learn a game these days? I remember when this was considered a fun part of the game and that feeling as you gradually got better and further in was great.
It seems that now if you arnt as good as you are gonna get by the time you leave the tutorial people get fed up and complain... Casual gamers are fine and all that, but does 'casual play' *have* to mean 'stupid play'?
Some folks think WOW is a hard core game because of the long hours required by the end game raids. Players of Lineage 2 and EQ scoff at this and consider WOW to be a casual game.
Is a game casual because the controls/UI are easy to learn? Maybe so?
Or does a game require tons of research, almost to the point of maintaining spreadsheets like some folks do in EvE, to be considered a hard core game.
Its hard to say what the end game raiding situation is going to be like in LotRO... I don't think there's much in the game yet. No idea if the 24 man raids will take 2 hours or 12 hours to complete, nor whether they will be puggable or require coordinated attempts like WOW and EQ did.
I recommend you play the game until it is no longer fun for you...then go play something else....
thats what I do....

Maybe if Turbine is smart, they'll forgo raiding altogether and do something different than the typical MMO end game crap.
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal
Now I got into City Of Villains, and wow, you can really hurt your character in development...badly...up to "almost unplayable" bad. And you can't "just respec" or something. After 3 Weeks of play, my first char was seriously gimped, and now I'm running my fifth char, and they continously got better, as *I* got better at the game.
Now, what was the Topic again? *g*
Well, as far as I heard (I myself made a BIIIIG Circle around LotRO), once you reach lvl 50, you can still do PvP (one of the best long-term motivations you can have, and WAR will have plenty *g*), you can get better at crafting/gather up some stuff for really rare/good crafted stuff, and venture out to collect more and more Titles and such.
If that's not your Cup of Tea...well I dunno, just enjoy it till lvl 50 and then stop...usually a game costs ~50€ here, MMORPG or not, and you get a Month of free play, while I often finish good single player games after 5-10 Days, so a Month of Fun seems good enough for the Price.
They will continue to add content, but at all levels. Not just level 50.
I think LOTRO is a lot more casual than EVE. The jury is still out if every aspect of LOTRO is casual, though.
Yes and no. Any game that has pie carrying (if spotted by a hungry hobbit, you fail) quests, or post carry quests, or that gives out slug smasher and pie eating contest titles certainly has a casual side. A game in which you're playing a small, but important part in a war that will determine the fate of the world, with ominous and foreboding areas like the barrow downs is not casual in the sense of trivial content.
It's a game that offers choice. You can solo, follow the epic quest line or not, and of course group, explore, or craft. At least one raid will be in the game after the first added material in June. It comes closer to something for everyone than any other game I've seen.
So, yes it's casual, but that's not the whole story.
As with all the other posters, it depends on what you term 'casual'
I would call LOTRO casual as it isnt a hardcore grind, I find myself sidetracked by the quests and exploring rather than forcing myself to level all the time and in general, dont take it too seriously in terms of pushing to lvl 50 straight away, Im playing through quite slowly and the levels seem to just come with no effort. The community also seem very casual player oriented, most players looking for guild want a casual friendly guild and i have seen very few non casual guilds at least on Evernight server.
On the other hand, its been years since I found myself staying up till 4am on a weekday cos im so hooked I dont wanna log off, the house is a mess and I cant remember the last time I ate this many takeaways :P so in terms of lifesink, very very hardcore lol. I wouldnt worry about not being able to do 5-6 hours play, its definately immersive enough and the rewards come from playing so i dont see the problem there.
Lore is the only thing I couldnt comment on, I love the books and I see the similarity but its not the LOTR I have envisaged from reading the books, therefore I dont really make the connection in game, its just another MMO
On weekdays I solo and explore most of the time. On weekends I enjoy the one and two hour group encounters. I have never done the raid so I can't speak on that.

You can level and do quests without tackling these tougher mobs, so it's very scalable IMHO.
Ive only played WoW n GW, and i would consider WoW quite hardcore to me but couldn't really get into it as the lore n story doesn't do it for me :E
