I wasnt really sure about this game when I was in beta, but i knew i was gonna try it when it was released so i pre-ordered to get the $10 a month deal. Now after playing for a while I think it is great!! At the beginning it can get a little boring but it is definately worth it. A The game gets funner as u go on. The graphics are top notch, except for the characters(they coulda done better). The quest based xp is way better than grind. The world is very interactive and huge. Smooth gameplay and community is very helpful and mature.

The game provides me fun enough and I'm pleased of how they adopted the lore.

Yet I somewhat doubt it will please a grind, powerplay, PvP or raid centric style of play. Doesn't make it a bad game. It just has a different scope.

Nothing I cannot live with or do not enjoy. I love creative writing and the game provides me with enough depth to weave a tale or two.

    Unimpressed.........

It plays just like every other level grind loot centric game I have ever played. I was hoping for better from a 3rd gen MMO .

LotRO is not a 3rd gen game. Never has been stated to as one, it is simply a game.

    I uninstalled today.

I guess it's fine if you like extremely limited class/ race choices, fugly crude character models, hats that make everyone look identically stupid, game play that is exclusively quest quest quest, and an unsocial environment in which everyone runs around solo doing the afore mentioned quests alone, but to me it is dull, unchallenging, shallow, mmorpg lite drivel that sells itself on a popular IP and little else.

This game is popular for exactly the same reason McDonalds is, and it fills the same niche in the mmorpg market as that does for restaurants.

btw, when I say 'quest', I obviously mean, in the main, 'jobs'... kill 10 of these, collect 10 of those, deliver this parcel to farmer fatman, whatever.

Also, that poll is skewed in the game's favour, and even so about half the voters so far think it ranges from very average to out right crappy...

I couldnt have said it better myself. This game is truly uninspired.

I like the game a lot.

The world looks great, the story telling is awsome, the use of instances is unique, the Epic book quests are a blast to do and really suck you into the world.  The trait, deed, and title systems are a fun way to ease the grind.  PvMP is also a lot of fun.

Sure the game has its bugs but it's not even a month since launch.  I will reserve my opinoins on how Turbine "Listens to the community" after I see the patch notes from the first content update.  I have high hopes though.

I went with "good enough"..... it meets my expectations for an entertaining game.....will hold me over until AOC, WAR or something else catches my interest.....

I went with great game, it's a lot of fun and meets my needs at the moment. I am interested in AOC and WAR but a bird in hand so to speak. They might be good games, time will tell. Vanguard and DnL were supposed to be good games also.

    I miss DAoC

I wouldn't say it's the greatest game ever made but it's fun enough to keep my attention for a while. At least I can come home from work and log in and find plenty to do without spending a lot of time traveling or looking for groups to do things. The graphics are pretty nice and most of the quests have pretty cool story lines behind them that keeps them from getting boring. As far as the community goes you probably won't find a better one in to many game. Most people have been very helpful when others ask questions about quests or just general help.

I have an addictive personality, so when I dive into a new gaming experience, I tend to get carried away.  I play as much as possible, think about it at work, plan during the drive home what I will do when I get online, etc.

With LoTRO, this period stopped after about 2 weeks, which is a lot shorter than usual.  In fact, a game has to be quite unusually dull for me to stop logging in obsessively for at least a few months.

LoTRO is dull.  There are very few class/race choices ( 4 races, 6 classes) and despite the much-touted trait system which is designed to enable people to customize their character to be stronger in the abilities they choose, I find the mind-numbing grinding required to increase a given trait is more than demoralizing.

Crafting is also a major grind, and for some professions the items you can make are completely useless.  I became a weaponsmith and at lvl 36 and Tier 4 crafting I have yet to produce a single weapon that I or anyone else would ever want to use.

With the exception of the group attacks (Called conjunctions) which are occasionally possible in combat, engaging your enemies in the game is, well, not very engaging.  Admittedly, the conjunctions are cool if you can pull them off, as they are very powerful, variable and usually accompanied by an eye-catching animation and a strong sound, but other than that you'll be snoozing pretty fast.  I think the combat is just too easy.  There are very few sitautional skills that need to be used by a given class, and few if any encounters that require special attention or tactics (I am sure these exist in the end, but have not seen any as of lvl 36).

The environment looks good, quite detailed, but the character models are a bit disappointing.

If you are on the fence about trying this game, you'd be wise to jump off on the side farthest from LoTRO.

I voted great game, simply because there was nothing in between that and good enough.  Time will tell for me on whether or not it is a "GREAT GAME!"  If Turbine keeps up with their current track record with LotRO, I don't see why not.  The June expansion and if they just keep telling me that player housing is coming, I'll keep giving  them $10 a month.  LotRo is a very good game....IMO.

Very happy so far. Amazingly well done; I'd hoped they hadn't messed up the Canon, but they did far better than that.

Economy for those in the teens needs work, crafting needs tweaking, but that's the total issues list for me. Lone Lands quests are a bit repetitive, but North Downs are good, and you can go back and forth between the two.

In many cases, when I've done the quests for an area, I'm apt to be pretty close to completing several of the deeds.  If you look ahead, you see what you need to kill to get the Virtues you want; so kill a few extra of those critters in your travels; they'll add up.

    25 Hunter; good class.

    I'm satisfied so far.

THe visual and immersion impact is signficative. I'm a bit concerned about lack of customization, I heard about the trait systems and how it expand as you go, but cannot yet experience it.

Still, the game feels close to the IP material and it has definitly learned something from its major competitor. Will know more later on.

Mixed feelings so far with a shift towards good due to the great community on the UK RP server.

Im nearly lvl 20 now and have explored almost 70% of the map (I like to travel)  which gives me slowly the feeling I have been to most places but an expansion (free) is coming out soon.

Some quests are fun, some are just boring however grouping with friends adds to the positive experience. Limited class number still bugs me (maybe even more as I have also the feeling that classes become more the same in higher levels (hunters using 2-handed weapons in heavy armor, Champions using bows etc, everybody chosing the same traits).

Im enjoying it so far,but whether it'll hold my attention for months I dont yet know. Theres a few issues that need looking into, such as the practically useless at this time crafting, the fact that theres no real incentive to group, even though grouping would actually be quicker and easier than soloing as in pretty much every other MMO out there.

-The travel system is way too expensive for what it is at lower levels.

-The auction house search facility needs tweaking a little.

-the cost of materials for crafting can turn out to be a little expensive, such as buying wax for treating wood.

the actual game itself is good though, the scenery and surroundings are very well done, theres plentiful ore, wood and vegetation around for the gathering professions, the gameplay is solid and works well.

the classes have some good mechanics to them, such as being able to unlock skills by using others first.

the trait and destiny points system is a nice change, some give you more resistance benefits, other more to stats or regen;they kind of act like collectable pieces of gear.

Ive not tried monster play properly, but ettin moors is huge and like a whole other area for you to gain extra destiny points through quests. the idea of monster play is also very good,as if your main class isnt really great in pvp,you can instead choose a monster and tweak it to your choosing.

the community is A+,very friendly and helpful, not come across any l33t kiddies as of yet or any scoffing bores harping on about some distant game which had better depth, nor any lore bullies.

I'd say for the average WoW player whos sick and tired of that particular game this is a very viable alternative as it has decent PVE content with the added promise that theres going to be more added regularly. How the PVP aspect will play out I dont know yet,not many people are max level on their free peoples characters so its not a huge issue right now.

I've stopped playing. Despite being a Tolkien fan from an early age this game just doesn't have much to offer at any level.

Fun game for the most part.  Still missing different things to do besides craft and quest.  But im having tons of fun because the quests are all different from eachother and there is no problem what so ever finding a group in the game, it is heavily populated which is awesome to me.  Why play an MMO that has no people on it?

Im also hoping they implement player housing, or even maybe player cities, that would be awesome, there is soooo much to explore in this game its riduculous.  There is a lot of train and things that have no quests or any cities even remotly close, and thats just in the little bit that i have explored.    But again very fun game, for everyone? no, for a lot of people it is very fun.  And quit the wow clone crap, because wow got it stuff off of other mmorpg's so does that make wow an EQ clone? far from it.
  • wogeswoges Member Posts: 57
I believe some of the Blizzard devs said they kinda based WoW off of EQ.

No link though cos this is out of memory.

I never played EQ so I don't have an opinion myself.

I have stopped completely. I believe they completely destroyed everything that was great about the books by making it a cash-hogger carebearfest. I do not blame them for trying to attract the biggest audience, I am simply not going to play it, and I regret giving them the money for the box. Would have been way better spent on a beer-binge, or on fresh copies of the original books.

Lovin' it!  And, so is my wife

Very casual, PvE friendly...if you you want to race to max level (50 now) or want "meaningful PvP"<whatever that is>, LOTRO is not for you.
