manslaughter, medical accident if the beau was a doctor, a means of murder that said witnesses could not identify, said witnesses did not know someone was dying from what they saw (IE tying up the wife and putting her in a box with a target on the side, then firing a gun at it for fun with a few friends), the wife went nuts and tried to kill the husband (self defense in other words), the beau was a monarch/dictator/other figure of authority that for whatever reason could never be charged, like say, Henry the eighth, the husband himself died before any charges could be brought.

Well, if you're saying "kills" rather than "murders" it could be any number of things.
Maybe he married someone who his country is at war with, and he shoots her in combat.
Maybe he crashes his car, killing his wife.
Maybe he blew up the whole world, so there's nobody left to accuse him of murder - hmm... in fact most other scenarios I can think of, somebody could accuse him of murder (even if they're wrong) so I'll go for this one - he kills everybody!
She was sentenced to death and he just happened to be the hangman.
Sounds about right, thats exactly what came up when i googled it.
Yeah. I knew it because I've heard it before... but googling riddles often help Surely it's still possible that someone is able accuse a hangman of murder?
But to the original riddle, I would have thought he was the doctor taking care of his wife that pulled the plug, or maybe even he had an accident during surgery (the witnesses then being the attending doctors/nurses assisting the surgery).

I shoot for the curve... anything above that is gravy.
