Please dont take this as a flame on WAR or WoW!
dont get me wrong about wow, I played it since beta and up to recently, atm im playing LoTRo (hehe aleady cancelled my subs and im just using the free month up) but its tooooo nice, I want to either fight for a TRUE EVIL side or fight against one, in wow you couldnt really say the horde were evil, aqt best you could say that they were misunderstood :P Orcs drafted into a cause to fight, Trolls, proberly the worse, Tauren, were helped by the orcs so they allied with them, and the forsaken, rebelling against thier undead leaders. I want Orks who just like to fight and destroy, chaos who want to defile the universe and tbh i dont know enough about dark elves to comment...
Ive read a few Warhammer 40k books and i played the Mark of chaos and horned rat games from Warhammer, and I get the impression that Warhammer and Warhammer 40k are pretty much the same, just set in different times, one being D&D like setting and the other Futuristic.
Well witht he books ive read: so far 1st trilogy of the space wolves, and a fair few of the Dan Abnet books Eisenhorn, ravenor and gaunts ghosts To be fair these books are quite grusome at times and I BLOODY LOVE THE DARKNESS that comes across in them, people being flayed, eaten, blown apart, blood guts and evil!
I do hope that WAR is gonna be like this, is it going to be?
I love the idea of AoC being mature rated, is there any chance that WAR will be similar, keeping the little kiddies away.
The idea of being part of the Empire fighting against people who are most likely gonna hump my rotten corpse kinda gives you a little more to fight for :P

It will not nearly have as many as WOW because wow was aimed towards little kids, it was aimed towards the D2, WC3, and starcraft people and that is mainly kids.

Warhammer, since its inception in the 1980's, has always been a combination of brutal savagry and unadulterated humour. The devs have said that they're sticking to the "cannon" of Warhammer, so expect both in the game. I think the trailer video does a good job setting the game's tone by starting off with a villainous Orc who proceeds to launch himself from a catapult without thought for the messy consequences. All that was missing from the classic splat as the moronic villain hit the wall was the snotlings holding up judging scorecards.
Mmmm, Bloodbowl.

WoW has 12+ with big letters printed on it, i hope Mythic's aim will be a bit higher agewise, but neverthless you can't expect it to be that much higher, maybe 15+.
Now i am sure many 15yo's will argue with me but the truth is that 12 or 15 there is not that much of a big diference IRL, so i am afraid that my old fingers will have to compete with the younglings, a task that becomes harder and harder every year.
nice one... you cleared up a few things for me...
was gonna plunge into the warhammer books as soon as I get paid (bah monthly pay) and ill look at these darkblade ones
I remember reading there going for a M rateing and sticking to more adult stuff.
Playing: Everthing
Played: DAoC,AC2,EvE,SWG,WAR,MXO,CoX,EQ2,L2,LOTRO,SB,UO,WoW.
I have played every MMO that has ever come out.

I do think they will go for a more dark destruction faction with humor involved to lighten up the darkness. But I highly doubt that it will be anything like WoW's view on the horde.
Games Workshop will never allow EA Mythic to make a kiddie warhammer game. The tabletop game is filled with darkness.
Also online games are hard to monitor using the ESRB rating system since the content is constantly changing. I would expect WAR to still have the Teen rating but be approaching a mature.
Me neither. It's these adult and mature guys here who whine about that the WoW Players doesn't do /bow when they pass by.(what did that have to do with anything?)
Nah, it's just alot of WoW haters who prefer to whine about WoW. It's these "hardcores" who hate that WoW made the business big and will take every chance they get to whine about how bad WoW is.
However there isn't much blood in WoW, but really does blood make a game good? I got no problems with it, but taking WoW as one example is wrong as there are alot of other games with a total lack of blood. WoW got the "undead" areas that all are pretty "sinister" if u ask me, sure they could be alot worse, but who cares?
I don't really care how "sinister" they make the game, as long as they remember to make the environments pretty good and the gameplay awesome it will still be a good game.
i played wow for a bit i think one of the reason people consider it to be kiddie is i played for a while and pretty much every group i got into outside of my guild had atleast one or more immature gamer in it(i hate to say kiddie because that implies they are really young when irl age has nothing to do with it) and ultimately that was why i left wow
unlike most wow haters(which i sortof am) i don't criticise wow as i quite liked the game i just criticise the wow community as with most popular games u end up getting an lots of morons and annoying people although they are in every game i try to work on a how often i meet these extremely annoying people and in wow every group had one but atm i am playing vanguard and managed to get to level 33 without meeting one then one showed up but so far touch wood i havn't had the misfortune of grouping with another
if u wonder what i mean by annoying people i mean people who get killed then go of in a hissy fit and have to have a tantrum in the corner like a 3 year old etc
and on the plus side despite how you view wow it has brought a lot more people into the genre and not all of them are that annoying some are actually decent people
Yes warhammer is more gritty and dark than most fantasy IPs out there. I hope the devs stay true to form with this, but even if they do that isn't going to mean the game is marketed towards more mature gamers. ( I say mature because age doesn't really enter into the equation. I've gamed with teenagers who act like fully grown adults and fully grown adults who act like young teenagers.)
Rating means nothing for a game. Ratings are only for parents who "supervise" what games their children play. It makes no difference what ESRB rates the game. An M raiting is not going to keep immature gamers away nor will a T rating attract the immature crowd .
The complexity of the game will determine how mature your average gamer is going to be. A non-complex MMO such as wow attracts a much more immature and casual crowd. A more complex MMO tends to drive these people away. It all depends on what the gameplay will be like.
Recent interview with Josh Drescher on Ten Ton Hammer may shed some light on this subject:
TTH: The Warhammer universe is obviously very dark. What are the kinds of things you do to lighten things up? I noticed there was a lot of humor in the NPC voiceovers.
Josh: Obviously when you're telling a relentlessly dark story, you want to give your audience a moment to breathe. Even sometimes throw in a weird gag character. You go through a Shakepearian tragedy, there's almost always some sort of weird character that pops up, tells you some sort of bawdy joke, and runs off.
Humor is absolutely the way to bring a little bit of light into the darkness. But there's also something to be said for the aesthetic of darkness. You look at something like a Tim Burton movie. Even when they're trying to tell you a upbeat, happy story, you're mostly watching to see the creepy trees.
Humor is how you lighten the mood, but the mood is what people are coming for.
WAR will not be a happy amusement park.
Also, complexity does not mean the player base will be any more mature. You have plenty of immature jerks who play very complex strategy board games which are far more complicated than any MMORPG. Just because they're smart enough to know how to play these games, doesn't mean they know how to act like grown-ups.
Intelligence =/ Maturity.
At this point in time it resembles WoW too much for me to give an unbiased opinion, actually.
I believe they are going for "Dark and Humorous"...sinister would realy be a subclassification under dark i think
As for the age printed on the box....unless it's adult, mature or 18+ rated, i doubt that will have much of an effect on the number of kids playing it. Even then, there are plenty of 13 year olds out there playing GTA:"whatever" despite its mature rating and 18 year old purchace restriction.
Q: Does the teen rating mean the game won't be dark and sinister?
A: This will not be a cheerful world where unicorns shoot rainbows at grumpy bears. It will be true to Games Workshop’s vision of the world. At the same time, the game will have a "teen" rating, as I said in the last edition of this column. Check out http://www.esrb.org/esrbratings_guide.asp for more information about what this rating means.
We also know from experience that *too* much dark and dank atmospheric misery doesn't make for the best playing experience. No one should finish a playing session feeling depressed, but they should still have a sense of having been in the true Warhammer world. Whether or not we succeed at that balancing act remains to be seen in the beta process (starting towards the end of the year). You'd better play it and let us know what you think.

There is a large group of us, all players from Lineage 2, who have decided to band together and form a guild for WAR. Most of us were "enemies" in L2, meaning we fought each other pretty much every day.
So, we decided to introduce our guild to the WAR community, and we all registered at www.warhammeralliance.com . . . and that's when the fun started.
We made a post "announcing" our guild, making it known that we all looked forward to PVP in WAR. Well, this site has over 10,000 members and for the most part, they all crapped their pants when they saw us. Eventually, what happened was that nearly everyone in my Guild got banned from the site . . just for MENTIONING PvP.
I should mention that we did NOT troll other threads. We just stayed in our own thread. Oh, and talking about PVP is not against forum rules. We can't figure out what happened.
But for some laughs, go check out that site. There is a "PVP" thread where it is suggested that there be a "staging area for people to prepare for pvp" and also a hearty discussion about "pvp music". I don't think these people know what PVP is, nor do they appreciate how fun and intense it can be.

I'll send you a PM if you're truly interested in figuring out what happened with your guild - The Syndicate. I was an observer to the whole incident over the weekend at Warhammer Alliance, I tried my best not to get involved.
The Mythic Developers regularly post on Warhammer Alliance and it is one of the most respected WAR fan-sites out there. They frequently are allowed exclusive WAR content as well as being invited to previews of the game and interviews with people from Mythic.
Part of the reason they have gathered such respect is because they exert very stringent control over their Forums. I've gotten warnings myself, and I will say their forums are far strictier than most gaming forums I have encountered. But it is their forums and like a guest, one has to be willing to abide by the rules of the house. As long as you conduct yourself in a polite, reasonable manner, you will have no troubles there.

The Orc is a normal Ingame-Player Model, with a rather extreme lighting on it (probably standing next to a fire or something).
However, it gives you a good impression at how the Game will look, when it's finished.
Screenshots are generally made without the lighting engine included, so no Shadows and nothing either.
For all those who say "But Warhammer looks like WoW!"...
No, it doesn't. It looks like Warhammer. Warhammer and Warcraft do have a pretty similar Art-Style, the IPs do, but trust me, Warhammer is the real thing ;-)
(Think of Warcraft as the happy fairy Rainbow land of Warhammer, then you know how the dark, gritty REAL Warhammer looks )
Expect WAR to look WAY more "mature" than WoW.
Talking about kiddy i have to agree that it has not much to do with the complexity of the game but hey people, we dont REALLY want a MMO that has a similar TES IV: Oblivion style where you are shown who to go to, where u dont have to travel for more that 2 minutes and all we can see considering skills is upgrading those that we chose at the begining.
i dont mind some running but it cant be senseless (15 mins running cause u died is boring and has nothing to do with the "difficulty" just with time wasting). people need to feel that the game is forcing them to make decisions they might regret in the future (i like MMO's cause u can reload or save, hehe), both fighting and skill wise. of course if the game is big enough it should have a few possiblities to reload or reset skills but these should be precious. warhammer has a potential to create a huge skill base out of it, use it well!
now, blood: this doesnt make up for a (non)kiddy game at all. what does matter to me is the fact that when i kill someone i actually get the feeling of hurting him and having a triumph over the one now lying dead before my feet (now, this is why people really PvP, to prove that they "r better", because killling an NPC doesnt have the reality of the fight in it, its so casual)
so, if WAR will give pople the feel that they triumph, and that the "triumphed" lost, then it will succeed.
