I read a couple threads that had some question simular...but didn't answer it completely.
I've never played a game like EverQuest, and I'm looking to start. So far...it doesn't seem that well organized. There's 115 different trials...with 49,000 expansions all at different costs....claiming needing this one to play that one...etc.
I'm starting clean. I don't have any EverQuest II on my computer. Since everquest can't come out and just say what I need to play like everyone else...can I get some help?
I'm looking to get "caught up" so I can play like I'm supposed to...without having to spend extra money(I've heard people spending $150.00 mistakingly.)
While that's said...Thanks for those replies to that one...
One more question. Why is it a game like EverQuest & WoW need expansions? Why don't they just update the game themselves, with a flat rate fee, instead of throwing out 150 expansions, costing a lot more money? I guess I don't understand.
Thanks!

To get the full Everquest II pack you need to do two things:
1) go to your local games store and buy the "Echoes of Faydwer" pack. It has EQ2 and all expansions.
2) There are little 'content packs' that you can get on the side as well, and while I'm not a big fan of them, if you want them it's pretty easy. The best way to get them is to sign up for a 'station all access pass'. This is basically SOEs way of saying "Instead of paying $15/month for one game, pay $29/month for every game we have". All you have to do is own the package, and then you can play all the games they have, which I like. With this they add content packs, special upgrades, and tons of random stuff that's nice.
Also, to answer your question on 'why do they make so many expansions for MMOs?'... apparently the millions per month aren't enough, so they need more from us
I think the best advice for someone truly new to MMORPG's, and perhaps without a powerhouse machine, is to buy and play WOW. Learn and choose your next MMORPG from there.
EQ2 is not the best newb-friendly game, and EQ1 sure as heck isn't. But WOW, while not the best gaming experience, is certainly the cleanest, smoothest, and most noob-friendly, and it'll run on any machine.
And if you want to buy Everquest II just get Echoes of Faydwer which is $40 and includes all previous expansions and the original game.
Tis' a pretty good game I hear I'm actually thinking of trying it out in the coming few days so good luck to us both! And as for games simply releasing regular content updates theres only one thing: money. If its free then why bother? The only company that really offers free regular content updates would be Turbine with Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons. Its a good idea if you want to keep all your players happy but at the same time the average MMO addict doesn't usually mind paying $50 for the #15 expansion for x-game. Casual is where its at and good luck!
You are right that a monthly should be enough. But they are greedy, and expansions make the game feel like it has progressed more.
However, really, you should be able to figure this out. If you can't figure out what to buy to play the game, maybe you should go to WoW. You will be led along by the nose and never be confused. Everquest isn't famous for up and telling you what you need to be doing. EQII is better than the first one about that, but you still won't be told what to do.
Oh...Echoes of Faydwer. Go get that. It's all you'll need.

Also, as those EQ2 Adventure packs are free with SOE's Total Station Access Pass, i think there are 3 or 4 of them so far. i am pretty sure i read where they are probably not going to be continuing them in that method. The Total Station Access pass is a value if you play more than 1 of the SOE games still though. For EQ2 though that Echoes of Faydwer is the latest expansion pack & it includes the complete EQ2 game so far.
i used to play EQ, it was a great game & now probably at times is a good game. EQ2 i did only the trial a long time ago & wasn't impressed, but i heard it has got better. EQ3, Vanguard, if you have a machine capable of running it i hear looks great, but with all the ingame glitches the functionality isn't there yet. WoW is fun so far, but after a few weeks it is beginning to wane a bit. Still fun, but the progression isn't as rewarding it seems. LotRO which was just released apparently has exploded in popularity, but i haven't tried it at all in any form ... yet. i want to find 1 MMOG that is entertaining enough to stick with for a lengthy tenure like EQ used to be long long ago. At least there are more options nowadays.
I too, wish there was something out there really interesting and fun to play, with a solid client.
No such beast yet exists I fear.
