I've played both (though admittedly I didn't come even remotely close to the "end game" of WoW)... I've also played many others (EQ, DAoC, SWG, EQ2, EVE Online, CoH)...
I can honestly say that LOTRO is a ton of fun, and so was WoW. They're very similar in terms of "gameplay mechanics" - LOTRO does some new stuff but not a whole lot. If you're looking for PvP, then WoW is probably the better of the two games in that respect (I haven't yet tried LOTRO monster play to be fair). LOTRO has the "better graphics" (depending upon your taste) and seems to have more immersive quest content, perhaps solely because of the rich lore they could draw upon from the books.
So which do I prefer? LOTRO... but I've always been a big Tolkien fan...
AoC looks like it could/should be great as well... I've paid for my lifetime membership to LOTRO, but will probably split my time between LOTRO and AoC if the latter lives up to the hype.
Reading your post, WoW is better for you. You've read LOTRO is a WoW clone? Its simply not true and that's why you won't like LOTRO.
"Don't corpse-camp that idea. Its never gonna rez"
Bladezz (The Guild)
Triston Master Carbine/Master Swords (SWG Eclipse)
Triston 29 Warden (EQ2 Permafrost)
Weland 70 Hunter (WoW Hellscream)
Suidan 36 Cleric (Vanguard Flamehammer)
Suidan 50 Champion (LOTR Gladden)
I chose world of warcraft for you because the game does have the mechanics down and does have almost 3 years backing it up. Most of all the bugs in the game are mostly gone and things seem to change somewhat on every patch day.
However, I been playing wow for way to long and I intend to burnout and comeback within the last 2 1/2 years. I have been playing LoTRO and find it refreshing and new.
Comparisons (just brief though)
1. World of Warcraft Graphics vs Lord of the Rings Graphics. (LoTRO) owns this department
2. WoW questing vs LoTRO questing. (Wow is more THOTTBOT simplified) (LoTRO is more story line without easy coords like WoW)
3. WoW sound/music vs LoTRO sound/music. (LoTRO) the sound/music effects <imo> are better do too movie quality.
4. Character choices. (WoW def has a better selection of characters to choose from) (LoTRO is limited at this time)
So all in all, it depends on the individual, I believe LoTRO has real potential and I am having more fun there than WoW.
No I am not on the bandwagon with LoTRO, I'm simply enjoying good ole fashion mmorpg gaming with a story and characters I can relate too.
PvP in the game is there, but it's called Player vs Monster Player (PvMP). As soon as people on the server start hitting around level 45ish, this should be very interesting. 24 man Raid Teams sounds fun and I like the fact you can 6 people in a group than only 5 people that WoW has. I believe, the more the merrier!
Goodluck in which game you choose, both are great!
