I beta'd LOTRO for 3 1/2 months. Liked it. Preordered, was there at launch, played- but about a week after launch, I lost any desire to play any more. It just got dull, uninspired, and it seemed like the community went straight to hell in a handbasket. I finally just finished uninstalling now.

Has anyone else found LOTRO to be a different, and much worse, game, since it went live?

There has been a HUGE change in the community. They seem much more focused on the grind, less social, and almost in a rush. The gameplay does change from 15 to 20, as it requires more grouping, and a slower advancement.... but overall, I think it is the community that has changed.

You must have a patience of a St.   I could only get by with an hour and a half in beta.

I did the beta for a few months as well.  I find the game has changed but I think it's still good.  As far as the community, it's not the worse i've seen but certainly not the best.  Seems to be a lot of kids and/or immature people playing this game.  I'm level 18 (Loremaster) and have pretty much done solo throughout.  Only time i've partied up was for the chapters after about 5 (book 1).

Sorry that you guys seem to dislike the game.  It can be quite good.

i beta tested it - uninstalled it after about 10 minutes because my first impression was that it was just a WoW clone with LOTR name strapped on

BUT just upgraded computer, and just got a trial key, and i'm now having a freaking blast. I dunno if my new computer just made it had more appeal since i can play it in full beauty, but it's just really addictive and feels really polished

hmm, give the community some time to settle, tons of new players starting the game, for alot of those guys it's their second or first MMORPG (I saw someone ask in OOC yesterday what OOC meant, was quite shocking)

ah well, just give it some time to cool down I'ld say

I agree - the game is a little better than beta, but the online community seems to have really gone downhill.

While there are still a lot of decent people playing, it seems like all the channels - especially OOC - is just filled constantly with WOW type crap from the influx of kiddy refugees from WOW.

And I am SO sick of the constant ne1, ur, u, wot, and all the other stupid kiddy l33t speak. It  is just constant. And the profanity, fights, spam, and all the rest has gotten much much worse, at least on the Euro servers. The GM's are either not policing, or are overwhelmed. When it took 3 days for a guy with the name "Phatkunt" to get banned, that shows a problem.

If it does not get better really soon, I am going back to EQ2 until someone clean up the kiddy squads.

My experiance in beta was actualy one of the best beta experiances i had with beta community, let me be clear this was in closed beta. When Stress Test one came we already noticed a different crowed coming in the game and beta Test 2 ruined a part of the comunnity for me personaly and well open beta as i did not even want to get into that, at first had pre-ordered LotrO but after beta test 2 i canceld pre-order both because i already had played about 3 months and i personaly was missing something, and because i saw such a swift in community . But short after release decided to buy the box but till today its still not installed and i think i might wait a few months as i already said i enjoy Vanguard at the moment as it gives me personaly the things i like in a MMO. But i do know it always takes time for the commuity to settle in. I've seen the release crowed of Vanguard and for me atleast thats no where near to the mature community we have today ingame (sure there are some anti-social gamers out there but we can meet those type of ignorant people in every game unfortunaly. Anyway maybe the OP should let the game rest for abit and try it out later again. Wow did the same thing for me after beta and release and made me leave but came back after i thought 8 months or a year after its release again and did enjoy the game for about 6 months.

I just uninstalled the game.   Bought it about a week ago.  For me the real game killer is how slow the animation are.  You fight something, you click for a special action and sometimes it takes 2-3 sec to process.   I'M not even talking about the fact that you can't move, strafe, jump or do anything while in combat, you will constantly get messages saying that you are either too far or not facing the target,,,,, annoying.

Another thing that i absolutly hate about it, is how often you get stuns, snares, rooted by mobs.  It seems every mobs you fight in this game as a way to stop you.  Getting stun, root,  for 5 sec at a time every time you fight a mob is no fun.

I've been playing since pre-order beta.  I have noticed as time has progressed the OOC chat has lost some level of maturity.  It is/was inevitable...I can't think of anything that brings together a more diverse group of people.  Age, sex, race, nationality, IQ.....If you build it they will come.  As much as I would love to be playing with only people that I can relate to....it's just not possible.

Do I find LotRO to be a much worse game as a result of this?  Absolutely not, this is the normal progression that I have experience with every other MMO game I have played.  It is what it is.

I played through closed, pre-order beta and got the game at launch, i bought it, almost the special edition. But i payed for the subscription. Only reason why you hated it after a week is because turbine's grace period was over and you didn't feel like paying for it.

So if you don't like it, don't post about it, don't think about it, and don't go on here telling people they shouldn't play it.

ditto.  Just couldn't get into it (and being one to try all types of characters, quickly got annoyed that most of them were sent to the same place after the intro/tutorial.)

Guys you just gotta start taking responsibility for your own community in your own games these days...it's the only chance you have to develope a good community and thus a good game experience.

First, don't put up with any profanity, even the popular WTF that is in OCC constantly.

It's not that hearing various derivations of the f-word is going to corrupt anyone ...but if it is considered ok by the players..., everything else that ruins a game will be considered ok.  You will soon see begging and  you will see kids using anything possible...more profanity, racial slurs, anti-religion, personal attacks.....ANYTHING...to shock and get attention....and that shock language by definition ruins the experience for everyone...how can you get immersed in a medieval fantasy game with all that trash-talk?  Report everything that breaks the rules set forth by Turbine.

In order to have a good community you must have social limits installed by the PLAYERS so that the norm becomes everyone acting in a civilized manner.

Second, quit glorifying quick leveling.    Ignore those people that skip most of the content in a mad dash to reach max level...they just reach high levels and start complaining about "no content" .    The beta players are OF COURSE a touch bored...you have already done much of the game...the biggest mistake they made was letting open beta folks keep their charactors, many hit 15 and built up a lot of money...hurting the economy for new players...and finished deeds and quests so they have nothing to do but grind out levels.

Overall this is a solid game.,,,truly a great accomplishment on making a game that does justice to Tolkien's works...the quests are excellent and made even better by the rich storyline.  So far most of the community is excellent, but it is up to you to nurture it.

I haven't played this since closed beta ended, but during that time, players did not put up with leetspeak, rudeness, profanity, etc. in channels. Anyone who did so quickly found themselves ostracized and told to behave.

Probably right now customer service is overwhelmed by the number of players and the more mature players are no doubt far outnumbered by those who aren't.

Either wait it out (though it may never end) or try to organize people to be more mature. Good luck with that, though--any social grouping (like all else) tends to fall to the lowest common denominator.

Just  my personal opinion here but I think the release community is much better than the open beta community. Everyone I have dealt with has been polite and well mannered for the most part. I am on Silverlode though, and rarely have the OOC  chat channel on. Just find a good guild that is the best advice I can think of, then group and chat with them.

    I miss DAoC

    Oh, shut up.

I guess that $199 I sent to Turbine was because I didn't want to pay for it. And where did I say people shouldn't play LOTRO? I ask a simple question, get a retarded answer. I knew there'd be at least one.

As for the rest....I guess there are a few people who saw the decline in community, but that wasn't really the main thing I was asking. Like I said, I thought it was awesome. Paid for a lifetime sub. Tried every class to at least the high teens (a few of them embarrasingly higher over beta and release combined) and just lost interest completely. It's a fun game one time, but there seems to be no replayability and tedium and boredom sets in around level 15 or so...

    It's that easy.

I have OOC shut off and regional shut off. I pretty much play the game in peace with my clan. Since I shut everything off I have yet to run into any problems.

You dont wanna go back into the forest do you? LEvel 15 is always the hump. I've done these quest so many times i know them backwards and forwards and I dread going back into that forest. I just take a break for few days and then im good. There is no need to rush in this game. This time around I'm trying to bring 5 toons up at 2-3 levels at a time then switch. Actually liking it this way better. Sometime we play games in a way that we ruin our own experience. I know i have to step away when i start getting that blank look on my face and zoned out..kinda playing in a trance. Ala The jedi grind in swg. And I'd rather take a bullet than have OOC chat on all the time in any game. I turn it on when i need to use or just want to see what everyones gabbin about. But, a 1000 people all talking at once about 1000 different things..bah!!  Its like you get shell shock if you leave it on too long. God save you if you get drawn into it.

And if you try and grind in this game, whether quests or mobs its like trying to fit a circle in a square. You'll mess up your mojo.

    See you in the dream..
The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.

Wait, the mobs you are attacking decided to fight back? Must be some weird bug huh?  Generally, mine stand there until defeated.  I've even had a few kill themselves.  Check your Settings. God knows i'd not like a game where stuff i'm killing shot back at me either.  Think it would kinda ruin the fun.

I haven't. But then again, I play on a Roleplay server (EU), so my experiences are probably much different to your's regarding the community. We've had a few idiots in OOC just after release (before they got banned), but nothing really major. I'm in a great kinship and bought the lifetime sub (like you), and find the community - for the most part - fantastic. But as I said, I chose to surround myself with Roleplayers, because in my experience they are the best people to game with; usually mature and intelligent.

Your experience sounds rough though. Did you join a kinship or try one of the unofficial RP servers over there?

If you ever decide to try and get your money's worth (hey, it's a lifetime sub after all), there's some more content coming in June.. and by then, things might have settled a little with the community. I don't know though - people are people, and it seems that everyone has the right to be a vacuous tard... and there's so many of them.

Really hope that the next time you play, you'll experience it in a different light.

I expect those who have grind'd themselves into boredom to have a limited lifespan in this game and hopefully no further influence in LOTRO afterwards. Sad I've already seen people rush their way to 50 in just a few weeks of play instead of just enjoying the game and taking their time to enjoy the ride.

Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.

    Hey guys!

Haven't played the game....and just watched the movies this weekend and saw that it launched, so I decided to check it out!  I read through this thread, shame to hear about the community. I find myself caring more and more about community in the last year or so of MMO's. It seems like some one said, that it might pass as the game grows!

Anyhow, quick questions. So I take it that the game is following the book stories? Is there a sense of freedom at all in the gameplay? Are there bigger goals that guilds can go after?

Thanks guys, good luck with the game!

It kind of follows the movies.  Like intersects with certain points of it (At least so far).  There will be raids that Kinships (Guilds) can do but as far as anything else? Don't know.  I have to think there's not a WHOLE lot of level 50's on each individual server let along a whole guild of them.
