Not surprised, the game is a good game. This should prove without a doubt that MMORPG's do not have to be buggy POS on release as some companies would have you believe. I hope Mythic/EA and Funcom are paying attention here.
Only way that I think you'll see a bad review is if they went into LOTRO thinking that it's next gen. Everyone agrees that LOTRO doesn't add anything new to the mmo foundations but it does take the very best from different mmos, polishes them up, puts them into an extremely well established fantasy world, and does so using a stable engine and virtually no bugs. And unlike DDO, LOTRO turned out great, has appeal to casual, hardcore, new, and veteran gamers.
Why the hell do you care so much. Who cares if there is a bad review. If you want a bad review, go look for the WoW troll greifers who scan the LOTRO boards just to say bad stuff about it when they played for 5 seconds.
This is a good game, smooth launch, good community when people aren't yelling about random stuff, and its not all about phat lewt and the what not. If you don't like this game, leave it alone, don't go around telling people "this is a bad game because of *insert random phrase of why its a WoW clone here*" and saying not to play it. Just go play WoW, or EQ2 or whatever you want to play and leave the community alone.

I beta tested this game and found it boring. Mainly because the lack of groping (played to the 20-30s) and the lack of mission waypoints. Have any of these improved in the retail version?

Nope.. he meant groping. I totally agree too - LOTRO has a total lack of groping. I mean... who doesn't want to be groped in an MMO?
As for grouping... ... grouping becomes essential for success at the mid-20s - especially for the fellowship quests (Great Barrows quests (lots of em), Retake Weathertop and many many more.)
Also.. mission waypoints???... sorry... lol... it's not that easy. And I prefer my quests not so.... mindless.
On Topic Edit: Almost forgot... that's a decent score from IGN. Sounds about right too.

do you really think lotro is hard at all? Whether you like mindless or not you got it with this game. This has to be the easiest mmo ive ever played.
And you played it to what level?
Come on, back up your so far, baseless argument with some details of why you found LOTRO so mindless and easy. otherwise, I'll consider your comment to be just another pointless flame attempt.

I fully agree. You can't really get away w/ mindless play even to lvl 15 as a LM. Some classes require more thinking than others. Watching some hunters solo mob after mob above level while others get wiped by the same mobs is amusing. Same w/ burglars. I've seen some who actually know what each of their skills do and when to use them and can solo an elite only 2 lvls below them, but others who just spam skills and barely survive against 2 equal-lvl regular mobs.

I must agree as well. I've played each and every class thus far (admittedly only to about level 12 in most cases) and have found the strategies for each to vary quite a bit. I've heard a lot of people knock the game for not having many classes - but all of the major ones are available, and other games with more classes seem to be nothing more than tweaks on the archeypes. But every time I start to question "how valuable is class XYX to a group", I realize the errors of my ways very quickly... right about the time my group is wiping because we didn't have a burglar to initiate a fellowship maneuver for instance...
Sooo, this game is all eeeeasy... suuuure, go for a level 25 instance and die, like 4, 5 times? Oh crap, wait, repairs cost 100 silver, like hey, that quest I was doing here earned me... 4 silver, and oh wow, in total, I've got 131 silver, and the repair for 5 crappy deaths costs me 100 silver...
Easy game? - I call BS, I never wanted to survive that much since EvE. Dying is a real pain and this gets worse.
And oh, group quests are soooo easy, suuuuure, they're for free. You just go there, kill stuff, pick blossoming flowers while dancing through supereasy mobs. Tell you WHAT, I CALL BS, in my first 6 man group in Othronfroth I died 11 times, we did not finish and I had to grind, AT LEVEL 20, for more than 45 minutes just to be able to pay my repairs...
The mobs in this instance spawn random, patrol, debuff, silence, there are traps, maze-like crypts and EVENT bosses, nowhere like "oh hey, theres van cleef with two adds, lets kick his ass"...
So PLEASE, this game is, as long as money is such an issue, far from easy-mode, VERY far...

i agree wholeheartedly bro. I played from beta 2 til the game was released. It truly has to be the most polished stable MMO I have yet to experience to date. Does it really push any new innovations? No. DOes it take existing gameplay/features of MMO's and polish it up and do it very well? YEs. LOTR isnt pretending to be a next gen MMO. but it has a extremely stable engine, good chunk of content for release, interesting "epic-prologue" quests that push and tell a story. has interesting "monster-play" PVP this game doesnt pretend to be anythign its not,but it does what it does damn well.
like Jackdog said, LOTR proves that MMO's can be releeased with little or no bugs. I am impressed with Turbine they did a major turn around. SHould be interesting over the next couple months to see how LOTR matures. It should do very well. Hell I may even get it since 1 of my current MMO's are boring me to tears. and yes I too hope MYthic/EA and FUncom are paying good attention and taking notes. I put pre-order on AOC lets hope it does well when it is released.

Agreed Meridion. I think what's probably happening is that people are forming early opinions on the complexity and difficulty of game play (be fair - levels 1-15 are indeed pretty easy...) and judging the entire book based upon that cover. They then rant about how easy the game is, and depart before giving in a truly fair and immersive assessment.
My guardian is level 27 at this point, and I continually find myself challenged... and I'm a pretty experienced MMO player (in my opinion anyway!)
I have to agree with the game being easy. A good chunk of ppl are around level 40 already. 3 weeks after a new MMO is released and ppl are already through that much content, leveling is too fast imo.
What is there is alot of fun, but i must conceed the fact it goes by fast, so enjoy it while its there.
Good news is that content updates are expected to be fast and frequent, first being June.

Hmm... I'm just stating an opinion here really, but I don't think that speed to level = ease of gameplay. It just means that many people are power gamers... and maybe they're level 40 because they're just that good!
I will admit however that I'm a bit surprised at already being level 27 myself. I hope the longevity is there for me, since I dumped the big up front cash on the lifetime membership! But it doesn't feel like a grind... that's a good thing...

Perhaps easy was not the correct term. It does feel easy to a degree as i have not felt challenged too much other than a few instance boss fights.
I think my real concern is that the leveling curve and thus content consumption is so fast, i wish the game started with 100 levels rather than 50.
Lets hope for frequent content updates, i always thought, since closed beta that content addition would be key to the success of Lotro.

Not to derail the thread but I have some important news. I have it on good accord that "Groping" will be included in the June expansion. It seems the devs are a step ahead of us. They've given it a tremendous amount of thought, taken some polls and decided to carefully integrate the groping animations into the four races. I'm not sure if interracial groping will be allowed simply because of logistics. You will NOT be able to grope monsters, animals or NPCs with the exception of the Nazgul and Gandalf. It will be an emote, /grope, to be added to the list. Woot!
Grouping.....I got nothin'.....
The IGN score.....yet another to add to the already long list of good reviews.
8.6 with IGN tells me this game isn't good and translates to a bad review. The editor's choice comes along with a nice paid award from Turbine so that means very little.
EDIT: Just an FYI of games that got the 'prestige' editor's choice award, LOTRO, WoW, WoW: BC, Everquest, Guild Wars, Guild Wars: Factions, Elder Scrolls, ..... the list goes on and on.....better to list the games that DID NOT get this award......'Hello Kitty'.
Isn't it funny how LOTRO's website doesn't show IGN & Gamespot's scores? Thats cause they show the game is WEAK.
IGN is the one valued game reviewer I look for when a new game is released. With the exception of Gamespot, all other game reviewers hold no ground in the gaming industry.
I have seen Turbine's forums....trust me....they are littered with 'HELP! This game sucks and I want it changed RIGHT NOW!'

What a bunch of nonsense. What you wrote doesn't make any sense at all. And as for Gamespot's "credibility" just look how much they scored that Oblivion crap.....9.5...!
And as for Turbine forums, don't lie outright, most people here know way better than you what's there, and more to the point understand english way better than you do.
