I don't play games every night.  Some weeks I don't get to play much either.  GW allows me to play when I want to as much as I want to without having to worry about whether or not I'm getting my 12-15 dollars worth.

All games have expansion packs so I don't think this is an issue.  If I like the game I'll buy it.

Also Precur, with the streaming technology the developers will be ready and able (and willing- I have played with a few and they are great people, with great work ethic, constantly fixing and addressing problems) to fix anything they find out about within a few hours.  So if you report something worth changing (i.e. unfair advantage, hacks, cheats), they will fix it as soon as they can, and you will see the result as soon as they finish it.  This means you won't have to report it then wait a fe weeks for the next patch where they MIGHT fix the porblem.  Thesis: Patches Blow- Streaming Tech Rocks

  • That is very encouageing Flamindeath, too many companies rush a project to meet a release date then cut back on development to maximize the profits.  Sure money makes the world go round, but that's no excuse for some of the abuse we gamers have had to endure.

    3) That the network code used is equally streamlined (or unstreamlined) for all games
    4) That the game design for all MMORPGs is the same in terms of server loads.

The server example was just an example, you also have security, in game customer service, bandwidth etc.  Of course server cost is not the only cost of an MMORPG.  How are you all being tricked into believing someone is going to give you something for nothing?  Its not free guys, they still get thier money out of you, they just dont call it a "monthly fee".  If you think that they are in the business to NOT make money, youre extremely gullible.

Of course these companies are in the business for money, but there are many other, in amny cases, better ways of getting money out of people, in order to pay employees, update the game, and overall keep the company and game running.  Having the people buy the game then pay a monthly fee then pay for expansions once or more a year, can be a bit overboard for many gamers, who don't have tons of extra money to throw around.  I think Guild Wars still has the potential to gain huge profits, due to their expansion packs, but for those people who just plain can't afford, or don't want the expansion pack which just came out, they don't have to get it.  I myself, have only subscribed to a fee of the big (expensive) mmorpgs, because I simply don't have money to waste in this regard, however, after playing Guild Wars, I am ready and willing to pay for the game and all the expansions.  Some probably won't understand why, and my only response is to play E3, and bear in mind that this game is in alpha but already better than all the other mmorpgs I have played.

I too am looking forward to this game, I think its going to be great.  But, you get what you pay for in all aspects of life.  If the consumer isnt paying to play, then it will be reflected somewhere in the game.  I just hope this is a good game, people siad FFXI was the best MMORPG on the market and I think its the worst.

This statement is not necessarily true, it more a question of revenues from the different business model.  If we look at the P2P model these publishers have significantly less revenues from the initial sales of their game seeing that they cut themselves off from a large portion of the gamers, those who are not willing to pay monthly fees.  Thus they have to make up for this revenue loss by charging monthly, to make ends meet.

IF we look at Guild Wars with the tradition model, plus good feedback from E3.  They could easily sell one million copies of their game in the first year, plus half that number for their first expansion. If this is the case they are looking at roughly 35 to 45 million dollars in gross revenues. hmm not too shabby Blizzard have made more revenues than this with both Starcraft and Diablo, the combined revenues on those exceeds 100 million dollars.

I'm curious to know what the revenues are on the best MMORPG out there.  Can anyone fill in the gaps?

Yep that just furthers my point.  Diablo2, was free online... was it good?  If you subtract all the hackers, server lag and over loading, and lack of in game customer support, sure.  Like I said, you get what you pay for.

  • I must agree with you there the lack of customer support from Blizzard was sickning.  They totally turned me off and I stopped buying their products after D2 LoD.

After which I went to Shadowbane for a year, just to hit the same problem  .. go figure .. unlucky I guess ...

This is where I think A-net will differs from Blizzard.  From the feedback we a getting from the Alpha tester they seem to be on the ball.  At least I wont be dishing out every month to find out ..

Thats what the free month is for.

  • Well the first month is free but you still have to dish out for the initial cost of the game.  So if it's a bust ya wind up dishing out , for a game that you cant play. hmm   I've learned my lesson .. I now read all I can find on the game and try to get on the betas.  This way I saved my bucks on Lineage2 which fell into the bust catagory. thank god for open betas!  Free trails is another good way to test the waters and this site also helps.  Consumer beware, is the name of the game these days.

No monthly fees = hoards of middle and high schoolers who dont have to worry about using daddys credit card for monthly fees.  Swell, just what the mmorpg world needs...

  • AH, Grasshopper, tis the beauty of instance zones this eliminates the griefers, Kill stealers and all around idiots that pleague most MMORGPS. Solo in peace, group with your friends in coop missions or PvP on a level playing field.  WHat a shame they cant gank lowbies in this game nor groups in mid pull, now they have to prove their worth .. Well back to the trail ..  it's pretty good so far, give it a shot.
