This actually goes for the old and new SWG players as well.
I played SWG when it 1st came out (2003) and fell in love with the game, it was complexed at the time and to be in an MMO with a hit movie series, it was fantastic, especially my first visit to Mos Eisleys Cantina. (Still it took me awhile to get adjusted to the game and to accept it was a Star Wars Universe)
I kinda got that same feeling (just a little) entering the Prancing Pony in Bree. To see a guy named Strider, well you get the picture.
Anyways, any other former SWG or current SWG player like the game? I am going to assume the older crowd of SWG may like this game a little if they are also a Lord of the Rings fan.
On another note:
This game can only get better if they do it right and please dont introduce a NGE system to LoTRO (j/k or am I?) LOL
PS. If they ever implemented a PvP system like SWG did in the days, this game would be NUTZ! I can't wait to get to hit the 50s with my toon though. So far I am seeing alot more PvMP going on with my LvL 50 Monster. However my monster toon gets jacked all the time now and too busy leveling my main to go agaist the Evil of Sauron and his minions.. LOL

I play it for now because there is nothing else to play. The game itself is dull linear and uninspired. It really is disappointing to see a great IP like this made into a WOW clone instead of taking a few chances.
Why oh why did they make Shadowrun a squad based shooter on the xbox? it could have been our salvation.

I like it but its not as good as SWG classic or SWG CU.
People who live for non leveling based MMO's such as UO and SWG and do not like level based skill games are probably not going to really like this game. There are exceptions such as myself of course. This was not meant to be a flame on you Starman, just curious is all. I have folowed your posts here at MMORPG.com for a while and was puzzled you even bothered trying LoTRO.

They are all old and empty. There is no life left in them. All were fine for their time but that is gone now. We need some new games that dont follow the exact same formula as WOW and EQ2.. Not everyone likes to be pigeonholed into classes that allow no room for variation and cause everyone to be clones.
The class/level system is too restrictive and doesnt allow anyone the ability to be unique. I appreciate the quests and the loot but I would like to have a choice in teh matter of who my character is going to be. These games are a virtual life simulation and its disheartening to know that I have fewer choices in a world where anything is possible than I do in the real one.
As long as we are talking about it I also would like to have some say in whether I quest or not. It should be equally viable to go out and hunt mobs for loot and xp as it is to quest for them. The fact that mobs in these games give pathetic xp and drop almost no loot forces the player to participate in the questing system even if he has no interest in doing so.
Im not asking them to take the quests out I just want to have the option.

Another thing they have in common is that they were never all that popular when they were released. Might as well face it in a multi million dollar business most developers will go for the tried and true. Hence expect to see a lot more dikus. TCoS, Tabula Rosa might be the exceptions however do not expect to see 500K subscriptions. AoC is still way too much of a unknown yet, the Funcom name does not inspire much faith for me.

Sort of like how WoW, EQII, and 99.9% of the other MMORPGs put you on rails? I can only think of 1 game that I played that gave me freedom. Old school UO. Even in SWG you either had to be Rebel or Empire. EQII you can do the betrayal and after that guess what , you just switched tracks, still on the rails. WoW you are either alliance or hoarde. DAoC , Alb, Hib, or Middy.
Face it guys quit you are all just being holier than thou snobs, there is no freedom in any MMORPG. There is no real skill involved in any MMORPG, just a investment of time. MMORPGs are all about socializing and killing time , they are not chess or rocket science.

And that's why I don't like most of them, for that reason. other than EQ and SWG, none of them have been able to keep my attention for very long, a month or two in most cases. Then it's a one way ticket to Pleaseletitend City.
Just for the record- in SWG you don't have to choose a side at any point, even up to today. You're still free to switch back and forth, change professions, and rethink your choices Wanted to clear that up.

Oh I know you could be neutral, as far as changing professions went I hated the single character server idea. I prefer alts. I had 4 alts in EQII, god knows how many characters in DAoC, at least a dozen. Changing professions just meant you started as a newbie with twinks. I went back just after the CU and tried it again, damn near cried when I went to where our old player city had been. I was in a great guild. At release we had over 100 players, by December we had merged with 2 other guilds and there were not 5 of us left from the original guild. Anyway I bummed around the deserted cities for a month cursing SOE and how bad they screwed that game up and never looked back.

I played the beta and i found that running around doing quests constantly wasnt fun. I do however want to get another chance at the live game and see how it is. Im waiting for someone to send me a buddy key. Monster play seems like a fun way to pvp. I just hope that LOTRO doesnt go crazy with particle effects like SWG NGE has were every skill you use has flashing lights comming from somewere.
SWG Pre-CU is still and will probably only be the best MMO i have ever played. It makes all of the other games look like crap imo. I kind of wish i never played SWG Pre-CU. Now everytime i play another MMO i compare it to SWG and get depressed and quit.
God i cant wait until swgemu is ready.
While it is ok to me to play i will do so , However once i feel like not loging in any more i won't.
Is it like swg? Well it is linear and level based, more things work and much less bugs. However as someone else mentioned it is what is out there for now makes it ok to play now.
It is nice seeing lots of folks around even at weird times. For now it is ok.....
I played SWG at launch in 2003 and straight onto Eclipse where it was probably and still is, the BEST online experience I have ever had. Community was outstanding, the PvP battles outside Anchorhead or Bestine were incredible (especially when i was killed by the very weapons I sold! LOL) and NO OTHER GAME yet has touched on the Skill trees that Galaxies had. It made every character unique, and they took all that away. Shameful.
I've bought 3 months on LOTRO but it had better offer something new, otherwise I see alot of people leaving when they ask themselves...'do we really need another WoW in drag?'

Thats unreal that you couldnt find your way to the quests, are you sure you were reading them? This is the only game where i have not had to look up any NPC locations so far, you just read the quest go in the direction it tells you and you end up in the right place. So your basic complaint is that it doesnt tell you the exact location of every NPC you need to kill. You need to re-read the quests no quest up until level 21 has even remotely got me lost they are all explained well in plain english.

So you like the Sandbox MMORPGs? Nothing wrong with that. By the way SWG quests system were really bad. In the game, all you do his go out and Grind Graul Maulers,Tigers, Pikets or Rancors to capp your skill (plus many other critters)
I remember this one quest I did in SWG where I had to go to Anchorhead, the Quest Reward was a Minature Stuff Bantha. LOL
The only one I recalled being great was the one on Tattoaine, I think you had to go into a cave full of monkeys and talk to the old man. Anyways, the quest ended with a trinket I believe, where you can resurrect yourself.
Believe me, I miss the SWG (Pre-CU). All SWG had to offer is, hang out with your friends, PvP. And it was all about Crafting and getting top quality gear so you can PvP.. Also the game had flavor of the month classes. Master Rifleman/Criiter Handler was popular. Master Combat Medic/ Master Rifleman. Melee Stackers. Jedi wearing Composite Armor. LOL and everyone wanted to kill Jedi.
SWG is not a good quest system in the days, but I dont know how it is now. Since I left when CU was added, way before the NGE system.
LOTRO needs to deliver something different to the fan base, other wise it WILL just be another MMO taking a leaf out of WoWs book and its about time things changed alittle.
Galaxies gave players the chance to be individuals, pre-cu, and this is something that no other MMO has attempted to try. Yes, 32 professions were too much but MMOs need to set themselves apart from the crowd and currently, LOTRO isn't doing that.

I have noticed that you hate it when people say LOTOR is a Wow Clone. Dont you think they are saying this becuase both games are linear and lead you by the hand? SWG definately was not linear. It is the complete opposite of being linear and this is what I think of when they say a game is a sandbox. Throw in the lelvel based vs skill based and I would have to say these two games have nothing in common.

Yet that darth guy wants exact coordinates to his quest target because the quests are too hard to find! Game developers cant win they will always alienate some part of the market.
And i agree the only similarities between this and wow are how you use your abilities using WASD and the fact that you follow the game from 1- End by following a path of quests.
As a direct result, I might spend just an hour a day playing this 'game' . Galaxies has its faults but it got alot of the basics right.
