I just got done watching the last half an hour of the last movie of Lord Of The Rings. My question is at the end....why does Frodo say the Shire isn't the same for him, and he gets on the boat with the Elves? Where do these Elves go? Is this some specia place that only Elves & invited people can go? Why does Gandolph go to? Why doesn't the other hobbits go with them?
I just didn't understand the end of that movie
Comments
1) Frodo is deeply affected by his journey and possesion of the Ring. The entire world of Middle Earth is affected in one way or another. As is usually the case after a world war.
2) The elves are returning to thier native land of Valinor. From this land there is no return to Middle Earth.
3) Valinor is a protected paradise. It is analagous to Heaven in that it is the place that life began. The elves, wizards, and men were born of Valinor and spread out into Middle Earth.
4) Gandalf has fulfilled his purpose in the world and his time has come to move on.
5) The other hobbits still have long and full lives ahead of them. Sam get married and has children.
It's a metaphor for a peacful death at the end of a long and productive life. In the film Gandalf describes Valinor..."The grey rain curtain of this world pulls back and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it....White shores. And beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise."
The most important part of reading is reading between the lines.
Frodo decides he would rather not stay in the Shire and work the rest of his life. The elves never made him work, and provided him substantial welfare benefits. The elves leave the Middle earth and go to that fantasy land of wine and roses, Washington DC, where all the fairy tale creatures live. Gandolph goes along because the elves had the best hallucinogens, and Washington DC is the best place to go to see things that are not really there.
The other hobbits want to stay far away from Washington DC, notice how they don't invite any of those departing to stop by and visit once in a while? Like most people outside Washington DC, they feel a little nervous when someone from that place comes a calling.
Visitors from Washington DC are never a good thing.......

Also, being a ring bearer, unlike Sam who simply undertook the same jouryney, frodo lost the child-like innonence characterized by the hobbit races. Frodo and Bilbo Baggins' may have been unusual because they were curious but they still retained that naivete before touching the ring.
A bit more information on why Gandalf left. Mithrandir (Gandalf's more... formal name) and the other 6 wizards were placed on middle earth millenia ago for specific purposes. With the ring destroyed and the age of men begun, his purpose is finished.
P.S. random fact: Gandalf is in possesion of the ring of fire, one of the three rings of power given to the elves.
