For years old school players such as myself asked for a classic server where we could have one last thrill ride. It took SOE about three years, but alas they made the Combine Server. The thrill lasted about 4 weeks and the high end raiders were voraciously trampling through content to unlock the expansions. I'd be hard pressed to return, I'd have to be assured that the expansions would be time based and not unlocked by content based grinding.
On the progression servers it was time based as it was content based. It had a time limit of one month and the rest of the content unlocks. So yes in that month the high end grinders unlocked everything but the next expansion couldnt be released till the month time limit was over. I wouldn't say they failed, they just had veterans to the game goto the server and they just ran through the server so they could make a permant name for themselves on the timetable. So even if they did a classic server with just kunark and velious expansions. You will have the hard lvl grinders move to the server and destroy the high end stuff just to make a name for themselves then return to there main servers after they corrupt the classic one. SOE won't make a Classic server because it just will be fun to a few hundred people at most and the server will be vacant and they will make no money. Yes theres 100pages of forum requests, but i guarantee once it goes live after a few months it will merge with the combine server seeing as it is the progression server. Be happy with the progression server. That is the only viable server you will recieve because once there is no more progression they will merge it again with another server. SOE is in the business to make money and lots of it with little revenue lost. Why there isnt a GM or CS for each server. They got rid of them. They could of paid someon $8dollars a hour for that job or $17,000 a year but they dont want to lose that money just to help there subscribers. Everquest is the best MMO we just need a boost in people wanting to play the game. A graphic update like gettting rid of the old one completly. Re dooing every zone and releasing it with the new graphics and letting people keep there characters and items and a mass marketing crusade and EQ will be back in business. Request that from sony not eq classic which will not pull any new revenue in. Hope you read That sony.
if you were a 6-8 year vet you might understand. All the expansions ruined the game.
Absolutely.
I am a "6-8 year vet" of Everquest and agree completely and entirely with the above. I think it was also the content of the expansions, pretty much beginning with PoP and the flagging and zerging. The group experiences in Everquest, generally speaking Pre-Luclin, were some of my favorite MMORPG experiences to date. I also enjoyed the solo opportunities and camping items while getting some reading done.
I was never crazy about raiding, and I am not today. I see it very often for what it is: a method by which to have timesinks, uncreative content that is experienced over-and-over again. It is also a forced-guilding design, under the theory that people will often be more committed to their guilds than the game itself. I am glad this is changing.
I'm brand new to the MMORPG.com forums, but I immediate went to the EQ1 posts to see what other people thought about it. I for one love EQ1 and could never find another game that compared since. It's good to see I'm not the only one who thinks that EQ deserves another chance. I support this 'classic' server!
I think there are like 2 main factors that made EQ memorable. Mystery and interdependency.
Mystery - you never really knew anything about quests, there was always someplace out there you never been to, and nothing was spoon-fed. You had to go out and explore it.
Interdependency - you had to rely so much on each other. Each class had its own role in groups and playing those roles well made a good group. You needed a druid or wizard to fast travel, at least until PoK came about, and you always interacted with each other for SoW and whatnot.
A classic server would definitely get me to open my wallet, but until then I'm just going to wait for AoC or WAR. I also heard that Vanguard has resurrected some 'EQ magic' but the game is unpolished, so I might pick that up once the bugs are worked out.
Played: EQ1, EQ2, Lineage II, DOAC, WoW, UO, Guild Wars, FFXI Currently playing: Nothing Looking forward to: AOC and WAR
I have a grand idea, let's take our destiny in our own hands and stop letting SOE ruin your desperate attempt to reclaim your glory days of eq bliss.
EQ, like heroin is best the first time around they say. With heroin, you body chemically is altered after your first HIGH as a defense mechanism. This way, your body is more "prepared" for the next "invasion" of the drug. Due to this, the uberl33t HIGH you got the first time will never, and can never be duplicated. This however, does not stop people from trying anyways. It's called "Chasing the Dragon" syndrome.
Thus, I propose all that seek a 'classic eq server' log onto the Combine server and start new toons on 6/1/07. This will give us time to spread the news. We will form 2 of the most active and passionate guilds, and I suggest we call this guild "Chasing Vox" and "Chasing Nagefen" or something to that effect. The guild you join would be Vox if your new toon will most likely xp in Blackburrow (my favorite zone OF ALL TIME). Those that would most likely xp in.... that other newbie zone closer to Freeport that I currently can't recall the name of... would join Nagefen. Once we all get past lvl 10 or so, we can have pvp, guild vs guild type play on the weekends, while weekdays would be more layed back and casual.
We would have to all agree to a strict limitation on zones we would travel/xp/loot in. We would also need to have a hard lvl cap of 52 so we can kill Naggy/Vox.
Now to be totally honest and upfront, I started playing eq just before OoW expansion, and I'm not the eq expert on old skool eq, so please forgive any lack of knowledge and/or errors that i've made. I did start 2 boxed toons on Sleeper server, and while it was fun, i eventually went back to Povar around lvl 50ish (after i killed Nagefen iirc).
I teach school and have LOTS of time to play this summer, and would be up for this IF enough ppl join (would only need 100, 50 for each guild, or so imo). And if those ppl were disiplined enough to STRICTLY abide by the rules. Perhaps having the 2 guilds be pvp tagged would be a good idea? Open for suggestions?
First step would be someone who is internet/website savy enough to start up a guild website
Step two is to find 2 guild leaders that are KNOWLEDGABLE, ALPHA MALES and have the charisma and patience and STAYING POWER to see this thru.
Step three would be for ppl to stread the word
Step FOUR is to SHOW UP on 6/1/07 (which is a Friday), and NOT to have a lvl 10 toon that wants to join on 6/1/07.
