I agree with most of your post, but I think FFA PVP can be self-regulating in a game. During the golden days of UO (Pre-Trammel) there was lots of organization and there were titles on good/bad characters, and there were penalties to attacking good characters and there were no penalties for attacking reds (who were actually also attacked by town guards). Large guilds of "red" characters sometimes roamed the countryside and took over dungeons, etc. It was great. Then large groups of "greens" would come along and there was a big battle.
I remember my brother started playing UO after Trammel was created and Felucca was turned into a Mad-Max ghost-town. He was terrified of stepping into Felucca (FFA land). That's when we coined the term "Care Bear Land". I remember getting him and some other friends together to organize trips into Felucca in-force and kill anyone who messed with us. Someone "talked smack" to any of us and we killed them. Period. It was awesome.
Now, years after UO, we don't reminisce about killing dragons or that kind of nonsense. We recall and laugh about our "Felucca runs," and he talks about the scared and excited feeling he got by stepping into Felucca on organized runs. THAT'S immersion.
I loved it and I haven't had it since those old days. I look forward to it again.
