Hey, I am just starting EQ 2 and was wondering which characters are best.

Which is a more needed/powerful enchanter, coercer or illusionist?

Is necromancer or conjurer more needed/powerful?

And are rangers a good class?

First you would need to specify what you're going to use the char for, although there is no "best" char, some are much better at SOME aspects of the game at certain level rangers then others.

I honestly have no clue, which would be a good first character and also good at max level. (Played druid to 65 in first EQ)

Well a coercer or illusionist is a great choice no matter what you're planning on doing (aside from trying to PVP at lower lvls). The only problem is that SOME people find enchanters to be hard classes to play, I have no idea why. Conjes and Necros are both great choices if you wanna do some great DPS, and also be able to solo. Rangers are pretty lousy as far as end game raiding goes.

As far as chosing between a coercer/illusionist or conj/necro goes, it's really up to you, neither ones is really "better" then the other.

Illusionist/Coercer are the most difficult classes to play, and their abilities conflict with the characters who do aoe damage. It's gotten better since the AAs from EoF, an Illusionist doing the time compression line in EoF can be a beast at dps. The Coercer's lines have great utility on theirs. I haven't played a ranger so can't comment on the class, the pet classes are the best for soloing and make not a bad introduction to the game.

Hmm ok so what race/profession is good for enchanter or necro?

Race has very little effect on the the class, play what you want. The items you get will buff your attributes enough that there really won't be a shortfall. Stick to the races that start in the Kelethin city in Greater Faydwer, it's a better starting area then the Trial of the Isles. The new evil area Neriak won't be released until later this month.

    enchanters:

coercer can be a really good class for a lot situations, but its not an eas class to learn as the others allready told you. but it cna be fun to play with charmed mobs as pets and with the right charmed pet you can solo very good (unless that pet breaks free).

Illusionists have a more classical pet so are a bit less risky to solo (the pet cannot break free) but on the other side the charned pets give coercers more flexibility. Also in raids illusionists can be good dps with right achievement choices, coercers usually are lower dps in raids (where they usually don't have a pet)

    summoners:

Both necro and conjurere are great solo classes, and both can also do good dps in most situations. necro is in my experience a bit more dps in raids but conjurer has also some nice buffs (mitigation buff for group...).

    Rangers:

they rely heavy on their ranged abilities so are a bit harder to play as some other scout classes but that makes them also a bit unique. they cna also be a good dps class, if you use good poisons and good arrows.

If you want to know which of these classes will do best at pvp you have to ask someoen else (not playing on a pvp server).

Also as opthers saied beforre race has little effect on the endgame, but when you start off then a good combination might help you for the first few levels, a gnome bruiser will do less damage(lower strength) compared to an ogre bruiser cause and also have less hitpoints(lower stammina) at start, which might make it a bit harder to solo for the first 20 levels. over time the equippment will compensate for the little starting differences between the classes(10 poinst less str is much when you only got ~30 str total but its not much when you got 500+ str).

Thanks A LOT this has been very helpful. I think I am going to start an illusionist. I'm kind of a number puncher, so which would be the best race for an illusionist? Is profession very important also? And if so which one is best for the illusionist. Finally and probably most importantly what is a server that will have some low level characters that I can group with?

if you want highest intelligence (which determines spell damage) from race then erudites are the highest i think. gnomes are very high too also all elf races (elpecially dark elfs but these cannot be illusionists from start, only after doing betrayal quest and switching city).

there is absolutely no need to have a crafting profession, its just an extra way to advance your character. if you want to start tradeskills then sage (makes mage and priest spell upgrade scrolls) or tailor (makes cloth and leather armors) will most likely be the ones taht will help you with your character most.  Then there is also the provisioner (food and drinks give shorttime buffs and increase out of combat power/health regen) that helps every class and produces coinsumables so usually should not have problems selling items. And if you like player housing and decorating them then you might consider making a carpenter, but if you want to make money with your tradeskill then thats probably not the best choice.

In eq2 all crafters start as artisan and can amke all items for the first 10 levels, after that you ahve to specialise between scholar (sage, jeweler, alchemist), outfitter (armorer, tailor, weaponsmith) and craftsman( carpenter, provisioner ,woodworker). at level 20 you have to choose your final class form the 3 avaiable ones that are part of your lvl 10 class.  I would suggest to do the tutorial quest if you are interested in crafting as it shows a bit about every class and gives you nearly enough xp to finish the first 10 crafting levels while doing it.
