b) assuming that an MMO will be good just because its being made by an MMO hero..... when we just had Brad completely mislead us with Vanguard a short while back. Garriott is much more trustworthy.. but being designed by a great man or a great company is never a guarantee... even RG could gamble and lose.
Garriott hasn't done anything in a while too and it remains to be seen whether his concepts of game design will apply in the modern gaming market or if they only worked back before the gaming explosion that has occured in the last decade. Games are now part of mainstream culture, not just the refuge of computer geeks like they were back when Garriott was making his successful games.
And unfortunately creatvity is not always consistent. Esp. over long periods of time. George Lucas created the original Star Wars trilogy. George Lucas also created the second Star Wars trilogy.

I agree.... past success isn't always a reliable indicator of future performance....
And quite truthfully, back when Ultima single player games were being created, I didn't think they were all that good. The only ones I recall actually enjoying was Ultima VI and VII, at the time I felt the Might and Magic and Wizardry series games were much more fun.
Then the series kinda tailspun with bad releases in Ultima 8 (and 9?) and when UO first came out, I actually avoided it because not only was it in a horrible game state, but I wasn't all that keen on the Ultima franchise at that time.
So I'm not nearly as impressed with RG's 'street cred' as other folks in this thread appear to be.... and I'll wait a bit to hear more about TR before I shell out my cash....

Garriott did nothing about rampant uncontrolled pking, and set up UO to loose huge numbers of subscribers who fled to EQ .He supported the idea of uncontrolled pking and total item looting.Respect for Garriott.....none here.

When R.G left origin/ea after Ultima Online they paid him to not make any games for a few years.
I will admit that any game designed by Lord British will be a game I try; whether it is any good or not time will tell.
Vanguard was a good example - some wonderful ideas, just big problems with implementing anything. A year from now it might even be playable, although I expect SOE will have gutted the things that should have made it great.

You ARe an idiot. That was the thrill of UO, the realism. That's what gave everything you were doing in the game an amazing excitement, even going wood cutting
Even something as stupid as gathering wood logs would become terribly realistic and thrilling. Following the possibility of getting murdered and robbed of everything you would start getting dressed like a real lumberjack, taking all your equipment, something to eat for lunch, and something for your self-defence.
ONLY as a consequence of a CHANCE of being killed.

What about Lord Irish?
