I don't mind if it has elements of any or every other genre, as long as it stays true to its roots in real time strategy. I agree with many of the people here who have deep concerns about a Starcraft MMO.
What would really raise Blizzard sales would be an MMOFPS, since they are few in number, winning the market shouldnt be any problem since Blizzard makes good quality games. Now as for the lore and story to the game, Starcraft has got more that that, if you noticed WoW also has a story, but they invented a new one just for the game, sort of like a sequel so its more action based and fun. They can do the same thing with Starcraft mmofps, make sort of a war with Prottoss zerg and terran like with WoW. The game elements would be actually kind of similar to Planetside, varying classes, different customizations and expertise, but unlike Planetside, blizz could add more gameplay for example, S&D missions, where players could join and compete with the enemy race. As for the world, i think it should be instance-free as it takes alot the realistic and fun element of the game, being able to flank the enemy without having to run thru and instance would be very bad. There should be various planets as to where players could go, for example 1 main planet for every race, and 3 other "neutral" planets for raging wars. Guilds should be more than just groups of players shooting the enemy, adding a cooler twist to it for example, a crafting choice as to the guild members gathering money and then building seige tanks or carriers, would make it into a more fun element. As to vehicles i think they should be alot and usable, since that makes the gameplay 1000x more interesting, what they must include "one of my wish list thingy" would be atmosperic and space combat, imagine a horde of protoss cariers & destroyers versus a similar terran fleet, mostly controlled by NPCs but still player oriented. Hope it makes sense!!
Starcraft is still easily the best RTS to date. Dawn of War is alright. Every race is the same. It's the retarded version of starcraft as is C&C 3.
Nobody puts quality into RTS as much as Blizzard. The races are completely different and very tactical. That's why the have Korean tournaments on the game, because no other RTS would work. Dawn of War has a pretty fun story that lasts one campaign per game, but don't expect any good online play.
CnC 3 is in WCG07
DoW was in WCG06(Probably replaced by either CnC3 or AoEIII)
That said, starcraft and warcraft 3 are the two most skilled games. Every single aspect of skill can be used.
Careful. That sounds suspisciously close to "Well if they sold X million copies, it MUST be good". LOL.
To me it sounds like: They are in the biggest tournament in the world. They have to have a huge depth for that.
I've played all of Blizzard's RTS games and there's just as much skill involved in playing DoW as there is in any of the Blizzard RTS offerings. No doubt they are great games as well, but Starcraft is fast becoming dated and there are many that didn't think that War III was necessarily better than Starcraft or even War I or II for that matter (there's a few responses in this thread as a matter of fact). To each his own, all I suggest is that if you haven't tried it, you do. You might be surprised.
I either own or have at least played every major RTS since Dune 2(I own that game). I've played Starcraft, Warcraft 3 and Dawn of War online. There is no doubt there is a lot of skill involved in all them. That is also why all of them have been at WCG. In my own opinion, SCBW and w3x is more skilled because they are more micro intense, and micro is the most difficult aspect to truly master in my opinion. If you want, I could elaporate on any of the previous statements.
Starcraft is still the biggest sport in Korea. That alone could keep that game alive. Whether people like or don't like W3 or W1 og W2 doesn't really matter in this discussion. We're talking about skill, and there can be no doubt that W3(and DoW + SCBW for that matter) is far more "skilled" than the W1 and W2.
CnC3 and Sup Com are getting all the pub right now, but I believe that's mostly because of their reputations. They are not that great of games.
Sup Com isn't that great after my opinion(multiplayer matches takes too long). CnC3 is great, but it's no wonder I think that, because I think CnC(the first) is the greatest game of all times. Multiplayer is fast and fun, there's also a great deal of skill involved(Not that SuPcom doesn't take skill)
To get back on topic: I hope it's a RTS because Imo it's the most skilled genre, and I love a great challenge.
What made starcraft the game it is it's the year it was launched and the years before that when it was developed - like wine has good years of grape harvest so does the gaming industry , the RTS releases since then followed a downard curbe with just a few sparks bringing new influences to the genre. I remember we were playing red alert aftermath (moving billions of units across the map to win) and age of empires 1 when the first starcraft CD was brought in to the club in late `98, it only took a few terran mission and 1 cinematic to gather 10 people around that PC drooling and praising it.
Thing is you can usually tell a hit by the initial, reflex driven, reactions of the people when they encounter it and starcraft had that je-ne-sais-quoi that instantly brought the "this is a good game" line to mind.
Hard to rise to that level today when the market is moving towards online title, the people aren't as innocent anymore and tired of clones and unpolished products. Expect the reactions to be not so good to acceptable no matter what they do to the game. Unless they move to 4d i don't see another starcraft revolution coming, and since its a sequal they cant score points with the element of suprise.

ANY flavor or variation of RTS.

The original Starcraft seemed to be too limiting on the number of units you could build given it was a futuristic war game.
DoW was in WCG06(Probably replaced by either CnC3 or AoEIII)
