so, devil's advocate for a moment; Was this taken post-maintenance. I have been playing again for a couple weeks now and have yet to see all servers listed as Light-Very Light except immediately following a maintenance period. With that exception Bria and Bloodfin have always been Medium or better when I logged on.

That out of the way, my experience, much like this screenshot, is far from a scientific measure as either viewpoint can explain it away. It's true the game doesn't seem to have the same population as it did pre-CU. There is no real way to deny that, but then, I don't see too many current players going out of their way to say it is as busy as pre-CU or even pre-NGE. Lately, the predominant comments have been that the servers aren't the ghost towns they are being cast as. For the few weeks I have been back, I can say Bria does not seem at all like a ghost town. On the same note, it isn't near capacity either. Bloodfin seems a little less populated but still fairly active.

Now, if SOE would move forward on a server consolidation (which many have noted won't be happening this year) the game would be more enjoyable for the current player base. It's nice to point to two relatively healthy servers and hold them up as an example, but the real story is the numerous other servers that don't even get out of "Very Light" status at peak hours. Surely it would be more cost effective to move forward on a consolidation then to continue running those machines.

they cant really merge servers, since the housing may conflict. my house can be on the same terrain of your house.

a sollution would be to repack houses but then again... what if we both had the same spot. now we have to fight for it,  who would have the right. for one i remember of having a house on top of a mount, that it barely just fit and all around i could see my city and all the houses, beautifull view.. . i would not like to give up that spot (i already did since i stoped playing long time ago) but if i did still play

yes and I imagine that is why server merges won't be taking place this year as there are definetly a number of 'logistics' to take into account. I mean, the house purge/cleanup/whatever-it's-called seems like a first step toward server merges, but it is not the only step. That said, various post in the past have quoted SWG reps as saying server merges would be a priority once 'x' task is completed. Unfortunately, my memory is vague on what 'x' task was and what time frames existed (aside from not this year).

Personally, I imagine a house clean-up type activity will happen a few more times before they can seriously consider merging any servers. Additionally, they would need to offer 'free transfers' from server x to server y in order to further reduce possible conflicts. I would think one condition of a 'free transfer' would be that your house gets packed up and any footprint you had on the environment is removed.

All speculation though. In the end, the base idea that a consolidation would be overall beneficial to the player base seems to be fairly accurate.

edit: closest thing i can find (after brief searching) regarding this topic: http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/posts/list.m?topic_id=46604

Unfortunately, the link within that thread seems dead so take it at face value i guess.

What a lot of rubbish. A screenshot, thats scrolled down from probably the busier servers. You don't know the players location or time it was taken.

The dev have HAVE discussed server merges, but at this moment in time, they won't happen. Personally i think they should as the current number, even at launch was far too many.

for what it's worth, the comments beneath image ha the following information regarding the time the screenshot was taken:

      • hmm sry thats 01/07/06 lol

      • Server stats 01/06/06 @ 17:00
Additionally, you can assume the person taking the screenshot is in Europe since the "Distance" for the Europe-* servers is 0 versus a server like Bloodfin which is 6 (0 for me on the US East Coast for some perspective).

    This is very misleading.

I took this shot less than 3 min ago (it's not even prime time):

And this one is from the other day:

Thank you for the screen shots. Its interesting how the more populated servers are the recomended ones these days. Bria was listed on both of those shots. However, I guess if a new player was directed to Gorath for instance, they would see how dead it is and probably quit soon there after. I have toons on Gorath and Corbantis and I don't care what anyone say's or shots they provide, both for the most part are dead. Players are not all busy questing or flying in space, they simply are gone. There are more people now than say 3 months ago, but still sub-par for any MMORPG. Flame away.....
