So let me get this staright, u think because all these games are ranked high on this wow hating site, u think that wow is really piss poor beacuse it is not ranked high here? You my dear sir need a real big reality check on the number 1 mmorpg game in the world atm, and not the games listed as number 1 here. If we went by the hype and ranking on this site. Vanguard and ryzom would be the best games in the world ever.
im am not talking about this site .. yes its true that wow had a great start and everything... but just accept the fact that more and more people are leaving wow.. and wow is getting killed by all the new mmorpgs comming up...
wow isnt dying anytime soon, sadly to say.
i might even come back and play BC til a good game comes out or just keep sticking to counter-strike -_-
theres 3 games to look out for IMO, darkfall - warhammer - either TCoS or AoC :P The only ting that can kill WoW is WoW itself and I do not see that happening any time soon.
In as far as your predictions. Darkfall has been in development for how long now? Smells like vapor ware to me. Every game I know of that has had a overly long development has came out a pile of shit and also any open PvP game will only appeal to a limited number of people. TCoS I will not comment on. In regards to WAR, they have already stated they want to out WoW WoW and Mythich has a good background so they may just pull it off. AoC is a unknown, lots of ambition there and some damn nice eye candy but can Funcom pull it off is the question of the day.

WoW had some things going for it...
First, there are alot of Blizzard fans (and with good reason - they do have a solid track-record of putting out entertaining games).
Next, Warcraft, as a franchise, has a huge following. So there was a huge built-in audience right there.
And then, you have the whole "phenomenon" thing. Any time something is extremely popular there are people who want to jump on board simply to be part of it. Any other time it wouldn't have occured to them to even look at it. Furbies? Cabbage Patch Dolls? Tickle Me Elmo? And on and on... Everyone wants/needs one, they become near impossible to find and sell for hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on eBay and such. Then after the initial rush, just like "that", everyone forgets about them and you never hear about them again.
And then of course you have your casual folk who just are looking for something new and it happens to catch their eye.
Another area that helped WoW out is that it was designed - deliberately - to be casual friendly (at least 'til end game). In all the various ways they accomplished this, rested xp, discovery xp (one of the dumbest things I've ever heard of - I'm an adult human, but somehow never "discovered" this huge city only 3 minutes away until now? Please) and the overall generous amounts of xp given for the most mundane task. The game is designed to give a very frequent sense of accomplishment and very minimal penalty for failure. It caters very much to a fast-food mentality, which is by and large what we have here States side, and in other regions of the world.
The down-side to making the game so accessible and casual friendly is what happened soon after the game's release. Blizzard must have underestimated just how driven some people can be to reach end game and before long people were at level 60 saying "So... what now? Where's the content?" Beyond that, person after person after person I talk to is getting 2 or 3 toons to 60, or 70 now, getting bored and leaving for another game. The game has a pretty high churn rate - especially for a MMO. So really, the reason it's so popular is also the reason it has such a high turn-over. I have never seen nor heard so many people say "I played for a while, got bored and cancelled my account" as I have with WoW. I also see alot of people using it as a "stepping stone" to other, more complex, and even older, MMORPGs. So while it's introduced alot of people to the MMO genre, it's not keeping them all.
So while, yes, it enjoyed a huge spike of players at the beginning, it can only be "new" for so long. Over time you'll see its playerbase level off. And believe it or not - there will be a so-called "WoW Killer" at some point.
a well thought out post. i agree on alot of the points you made. I played WoW til lvl 62 and got that nagging question in my mind "what am i doing here?" finally realized I didnt have the urge to play WoW anymore.

The only thing that can kill WoW is ( naah it still killin ) WoW community. Ofc I can b bored game, i can dont see some new sensible goals 4 me , but tbh it sux if u havent anythin good to play so .... . So sure , I could back to WoW and again have some nice timekiller buuut

Ok for one WoW or what i call (MoM) it is a game built for Dumb people in general!!!!!
yes i have played it and thats why i dont play it anymore!! It lacks so much for a mmo their are no Combos their is no positional styles
the other matter is is that you have abunch of little kids playing a game and their abunch of tards since they do not know what common sence is yet. And BTW LOTRO is not a rip off of MoM they graphics are way better their is no battle grounds and their is verry few kids that play since you have to think todo quest. their is no Thottbot that will give you loc and how to kill the mobs.
o well you are going to still complain that everygame is a wow rip off but wow is a rip off of every single mmo that has came out before it
wow did do stuff right they i guess the majority of people want a easy game thats why they had so many people!
I'm glad i left WOW. Burning Crusade was a good waste of 40 bucks for 2 weeks of lvling. And what's with all that sci-fi junk they are adding to the game. A new race that Crashes their spaceship. A continent that floats in outer space? Flying mounts that can't be taken out of the zone......ugh...
No one has mentioned the Combat style. I find LOTRO combat better then WOWs. I've noticed that certain creatures are more resistent to certain attacks then others. My fear attack doesnt work at all on some creatures. And there's certain attacks available only when your in a fellowship. In WOW my lvl 70 Paladin would hit the same 5 buttons in the same order over and over..yawn. I find the combat much more fun here. I've even had some mobs run away from me and instead of chasing after them i would wait for them to come back (like i would in WOW) but these guys will just keep going! I followed a troll from one camp to the safety of another camp on more then one occasion.
Like Rose online? Yes wow is a really poor game, that is why it has crushed every game up until now. Really must be a very poor game.
crushed? dude... do u even look at the ratings now and then? there a more ppl playing eq2. daoc. eve online. guild wars etc so how can it have crushed every1? even lotro is higher rated now.. even though it just came out.. so yes.. wow really did crush all the other games WoW has more subscribers than all of those games you mentioned combined. Thats a pretty good indication that a agme moght be pretty good.

Or maybe it means the people playing WOW don't know any better? That's OK, they will be forgiven one day.
Or maybe they're like me and tried many other mmo's (I've played LOTRO, VG, SWG, EQ2, Eve and a bunch of other ones) and have gone back to WoW because they find its the best one out there? WoW has never been perfect and I was hoping that the recent Blizzard announcement of SC2 was instead going to be a SC mmo. I'm getting tired of elfs and wizards and all that and really want to play a good sci-fi mmo. Until that happens (or a better game comes along, maybe Warhammer or AoC) I'll continue to have fun with WoW.

Originally posted by 0k21 Don't bother replying to the WoW fanbois folks, I just block them now particularly since I lost my temper with one and insulted him (and the block actually works!) there have been enough lengthy posts made about this ages ago, they're just trying to piss people off and live in their own little world, let them think WoW is the 'best' MMORPG, we'll just laugh at them as we play quality games like Darkfall where some real skill is needed to play it.
And yet you still regularly post in the WoW forums ...
LoTR and WoW belong to the basic Fantasy Themepark genre of MMOs. I'd expect there to be similarities with basic mechanics.
Turbine's done a good job with LoTR, I'm glad to see it doing so well.
Ico Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
No less than the "LoTRO ripped off WoW! LoTRO sucks!! WoW is the best MMO EVAR!! LOLZ!!!111oneone!!" crowd.
I'm seeing plenty of both represented on several forums.
Look, yes, there are similarities between the two games. After all the MMOs I've played (about 27 now) I could find similarities between almost any two MMORPGs, with some exceptions, it doesn't make one any less enjoyable than another - it all depends on what the player is looking for. It's nothing new. I don't care what you look at - cars, movies, drinks, foods, toys, etc. etc.. once one company does something that's successful, others start copying them.
