Final Fantasy XI has a really nice community. I had so much fun playing FFXI just because of the community. Everybody was always willing to help out and would do it for free.

There will always be mean douchebaggy assholes in whatever game you go to, thats just human nature. There always has to be antagonist, a 13 year old who thinks they know so much about life so they use cool letter/number words to try in vain to make you feel stupid. Same thing with the real world, isnt there someone at your work who is just a natural piece of crap? One of the better communities Ive played in though is Vanguard even though it is a LOL game, and NWN persistent worlds. The players in the NWN worlds are pretty good people.

Best I have seen so far is EQ2, DDO, LotRO.

In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.

City of Heroes has a pretty good community. I always found groups and the people were always mature, no one ever called anyone a noob or anything flamable. So yeah, some games have really good communities. ^^

Yea LOTRO has a great community, specially all the people who help in the chat channels

Ryzom, Eve, and Anarchy Online has the best communities I've run into. I haven't played AO seriously after it went free, so it might have changed.

I played ryzom for months and never ran into anyone who was insulting or had an "I'm better than you" attitude. When I asked a question in global chat, people would convo me even if they didn't know the answer to try and help me figure it out.

Eve really depends on your playstyle, since the corporations are so different. There are pirate corps who's only purpose is to extort players for money, as well as trade corps who all they do is mining and production.

I'll say this though, Eve is the only game in my 25 year long life where I have EVER been killed by friendly and well articulated pk'ers who play the game just to randomly pk.

EQ2 has the best community and I played almost every MMO out there.  Dark Age Of Camelot is a runner up.

In my experience for the past 12 or so years of mmo gaming I find that smaller niche games tend to have more tight knit and friendlier community compared to mass market games. The best community I had ever experienced was a niche game called Dark Ages by developer Nexon Inc., I have met a lot of people there that I have stayed in contact with for the past 6-8 years after I have stopped playing.

DAoC had an okay community from what I remember, but this was a very long time ago. I remember a lot of begging and whining, though.

EQII has an awesome community and is definitely worth checking out.

Saga of Ryzom probably has the best community I have ever seen in any game. It blows pretty much everything else out of the water. The gameplay and graphics themselves turned me away from the game personally, but if it's a good community you're looking for, this is probably where you should start looking.

I think it really depends on what crowd you fall in with when you join the game. There are groups of good people in every game, just like there are groups of bad people. Sometimes you just miss the good groups, or pick a server where most of the nice ones have fled somewhere else. I think also that the size of the player base has a lot to do with it. Vocal bad people stand out a lot, and in a big community there's a lot more of them, so it might seem like the community has a disproportionate number of jerks.

If a game has RP servers, then those servers tend to attract a more mature and tightly knit crowd. Just be polite and if you don't RP, simply ignore it and you'll probably enjoy yourself a lot.

I would avoid free games completely. The lack of a monetary investment means that those who want to be bad can have little or nothing to lose when they choose to do something negative.

PvP heavy games seem to attract a lot of competitive people. Competition brings out the best and the worst in people and I would just be prepared for both sides of that if you join a game in which a large part of the content is PvP.

While I didn't play Saga of Ryzom for long it has a great friendly and helpful community. The veteran players really go out of their way to help newbies and the GM/Guide is very friendly, courteous and responsive and actually helps you out instead of snubbing you. Saga of Ryzom has one of the better biggest mass pvp especially when defending your clan outposts.

I would say EQ2 or LotRO for PvE oriented and Lineage II or Eve Online for PvP oriented have the best communities I've personally seen. That doesn't mean they don't all have there share of asshats too but in these games the rest of the community usually will jump down someone's throat if they are being to much of a asshat.

I agree that PVP and PVE may be  a factor in how the community behaves. In Wow I noticed that the people on PVE servers seem to be more kind then the ones on PVP servers. The competitive nature of PVP may bring out the unfriendly side of people.

Fully PvE game - "Hi welcome to Never Never land! Feel free to sit back, relax and pick any fruit candies from the cherry candy trees".

Fully PvP game - "Everyone's out to get me! I just survive! Trust no one not even my own guild/clan mates. They will put a dagger behind my back the moment I drop my guard!" *Imagine Vietcong hiding inside every rice paddy fields at the Ho Chi Minh Trails with chopper noise over the distance*

You know I have been thinking of playing everquest 2 but it has so many expansions out is there a collectors edition box set with all of them in it our do i have to buy them all seperate?

The Fan Sites or Class related sites for EQ use to have great communities. Thus far I'd have to say LOTRO has a pretty civil community.

As far as i know you have to buy each of the expansions I think  there are 3 ..

    1. Kingdom of Sky

    2. Desert of Flames

    2. Echoes of Faydawer

And the upcoming Rise of Kunark ...

There are a few "adventure packs" which are mini-expansions.

You don't have to buy the box set as SOE allows digital download of all the expansion packs.

Strangely enough Horizons for all its faults had one of the best communities i've had the pleasure to be part of. DAOC for the first couple of years was also pretty good.

As other posters have said in most games there are good and bad elements, the unfortunate thing is that bad elements in a game do more damage to the community and game quicker than, the decent players are capable of repairing or negating, people are much more easily discouraged by bad experiences than they are by good experiences.

In games with large subscription bases you are much more likely  to come across disruptive elements be they players or professional farmers, yes this is about WoW I played for 2 years and mostly enjoyed it , but the ever increasing gold/levelling spam, Blizzards seeming inability or desire to do anything about it  coupled with their development direction into FPS/Arena style play taking them further away from a true MMORPG finally was too much for me, even now in what should be a mature game there are major class balance changes taking place mostly to support 2nd rate PvP, whilst almost NO true RPG elements are being added to the game.

worst community would be a WoW PVP Horde server hands down the worst.

best community of any game i played would have to be EQOA (PS2 EQ). i quit for like 2 years (played WoW) one day i was bored went back to check it out. my server was dead, tried Castle Lightwolf server, was just out lookin around got a tell for a group get out there. it went good was all BSin as we went, said how i was new to the server. one person gave me some "Luck" wich is an exp buff (2x exp or so i forget, gotten by doin a quest that can take hours) another person gave me like 10,000 Tunar(money) to get started. another gave me some low lvl gear he had made for me after the group was done.and i didn't ask for any of it not even hint at it seeing how i was just back lookin around didn't know if i would play more than that 1 day or not. and they was all in different guilds just random people.also you will not find ANY ebay gold farmers on this game. no idea why just never seen it, must not be a market for it on there all i can tell.
