Ok well first of all... I was reading the thread about people liking UO and other old games....
Then i realized that MMORPG's really are quite like a drug--in a way that never occured to me before.
When someone does crack, the first time (few times) is/are incredible. However, after this initial experience(s), the feeling is never the same--it is somewhat lower. The person then craves this intial feelilng--and unsuccessfully tries many many many times.
This has seemed true to me too with mmorpgs. My first online game was cosmic rift--one of the servers functioned like a mmorpg. It was soo fun....after awhile i had all the best stuff and was by far better than everyone, so i switched to infantry--one of the servers there, as well, functioned like a mmorpg. That too was really fun...yet not in the initial way that cosmic rift was. So in an attempt to reach this initial feeling, i sought other games. I went through many: tibia, runescape(i spent 2 years on it, intially it was comparable to that first feeling in cosmic rift. However, it was quite fleeting.) eq ac u name it i played it. Yet i was never able to achieve that initial feeling of cosmic rift.
So now i'm on here looking for new games...maybe eventually i'll find somethign that is comparable to the intial experience, but i doubt it after this realization.
and btw i realize cosmic rift was not the best game--it was, indeed, far from it, so dont say it was like unique to UO or eq or somethign.
responses are very welcomed

i also heard, the more choices you have the less satified you ever are, because your always looking for the best.
they described 3 cereals back in the 50's now we have 150 cereals and you can never choose the best one.
think i saw it on discovery lol
Usuallly everyone's first MMORPG is the one they tend to stick with for awhile, longer than any other MMORPG's they play. Because all the MMORPG's are the same, so there really is no point of switching over.

Very intersting Tai, I have to agree .. I still remember the first time I play a multi-player game back in the 80's on a home lan ... Doom was the game we played, it rocked, what a buzz that was .. LOL

LOL!
I love it when people excuse their incompetency with generalizations.

I hope you find the title your looking for Tail, and it's not addiction - it's happiness. Though if it is bothering you try to find out why your such an avid escapist and find it and solve the problem.

Good post. I have to agree with you, Tai.
For me, it started with EverQuest. I even built a new system while still in beta because I *had* to have a system that would have the game as good looking as can be. Ah, the excitement of putting those two Voodoo 2 cards in. Those were some exciting times. I stayed with that game for a long while and finally stopped playing on September 11. In fact, that is how I found out about the assault on the WTC buildings, ...
I have played most of the bigger MMORPGs out there, many in beta and some in retail. Over and over again, I had the anticipation that the new game would bring back the feelings that I had when I first started with EQ. Some were just terrible to me and I stopped very quickly. Others had some things that I really enjoyed but they never brought back the feelings of the first time(s) exploring EQ. Maybe the game that came closest to me and perhaps, in some areas, surpassed EQ for me was Dark Age of Camelot. I still play that game sometimes, mostly because I enjoy the small and close community on Pendragon.
Come to think of it, this scenario extends beyond MMORPGs for me. At around the same time that I was getting sucked into EQ, I was starting to fall for Unreal, and then the following Unreal Tournament. UT especially was something that brought that rush for me. Going through all the games in the Unreal universe brought me to UT2004 which I enjoy a great deal, but it still doesn't compare to the original and long lasting good feelings from UT99.
While I am at it, another game that really pulled me in was StarCraft. I was so heavily sucked into that game. I still fire up UT99 and SC sometimes, seeking to bring back the feelings of when they were newer. I know Blizzard is working hard on WoW right now, but I sure hope they someday make StarCraft 2. With that company, I am pretty sure that the initial excitement and anticipation will be pretty close to the original.
Let alone those EASports, Sega, ... sports games. They give you your yearly "fix" and then, most of the time, incrementally tweak the game, and keep the player coming back for more with the next year edition. Not that it is always a small step though, I remember a few times with those sports games that really moved up quite a bit. Like different qualities of substances perhaps. Either way, the person would have to purchase the new one.
Wow, talk about chasing after the rush or high from the first time. Very similar, from what they describe, to substance addiction. From that aspect anyway. All illegal copies, hacking, cracking ... aside, electronic gaming sure seems to be a lot safer, in the majority of cases. Gaming is probably still evolving though, so who knows where it is going to go in the future. They sure are fun though. Sorry for the long post.
Regards.
Erm not really.
My first mmorpg was UO which I played for nearly 2 years.I loved the game and loved theidea of a mmorpg.
But when I went to EQ I found EQ tons better and enjoyed it far more.Since EQ I have not found another game I liked quite as much.
But EQ was my SECOND mmorpg and I did play UO for close to 2 years before it came out.So that theory may apply to some but doubt it does to me.
ok well u played uo for 2 years... So aparantly you liked it...a lot
Therefore, when you quit, you must have been getting bored and looking for an experience equal if not better than ur intial one.
But how did u judge your next experienc?--based off of your intial one.
Lol i didnt make an argument but i think i have an analogy.
Ok you take ecstacy one time. The second time, in hopes of acheiving and bettering your intial experience, you take 3x the amount. Therefore, the second experience is actually better than the first one, even though you needed 3x the dose to achieve it. So i guess the theory type thing still holds up....maybe with a slight modification
Like I said the second mmorpg i played was better then the first.I like mmorpg and until 1999 UO and M59 were the only true ones out there.
However when I joined EQ i had much more fun there then on UO.Thus if you ever read my posts you would see that i always refer to EQ as my best time.
In short I prefer DAoC to UO and that was my 4th mmorpg after AO.And now i prefer CoH to UO.
UO was there first and i liked the idea of a mmorpg thus spent 2 years there till i had an alternative view of what a mmorpg can be like.
I've never done crack. So, I'm not sure how to relate MMORPGs with crack. I do know addictions because I am addicted to caffeine and nicotine and would have to say my gaming experience is nothing like an addiction.
I'm not sure that everyone will say that their first MMORPG was their best. That's kind of like saying that my first-person-shooter game was the best. There's been better games since Doom. I understand the people who say pre-Tramel UO was their best because it is really different than EQ and all the EQ clones since then. If someone else's first game was something else and they think it was their best, I won't understand the reason and may contribute it to nostalgia like everyone else is doing, because there are so many games like EQ but with better graphics and gameplay just like what happened with first-person-shooters
