Does it matter what gender the person behind the toon is?

As has been stated repeatedly before, "It doesn't matter". Play the game and stop trying to use MMORPG's as a dating service for crying out loud.

Even if a male character plays a female character to get free stuff... Why would the other person(male) give this female character stuff? Ill tell you why because he expects something in return and Im sure we all know what that is. So while i think the whole deal is underhanded and stinks, dont play the victim men. You and I and everyone else knows where YOUR mind is when you respond to these "female" characters in games by giving them items or cash.
Maybe men should check their libido at the login page.

the only thing that matters is if the person understands how to play their class role in a group.

I give all the people I like to play with stuff.

I give stuff to total strangers too.

The more I like to play with you, the more stuff I am likely to give you.

I don't think people I give stuff to in game are going to give me a lapdance. Girls I stalk in game aren't going to become my lover. I suppose it's conceiveable they might flash me on MSN, but I think we are barking up the wrong tree with that.

When I am in a bar, I also buy drinks for girls. And for that matter anyone else who's company I enjoy. A little bit of bribery is important in a relationship. I see nothing wrong with doing something nice for people you like and it's always nice when people are pleased to see you. I certainly wouldn't want all the sexy girls in the house to leave just because they didn't have a drink.

Mrs Baff can have whatever she wants. Anything in my power to give her. Not because I want her to jump on me naked. She wants to do that already. It's a traditional male role. It's also a matter of security for a woman to know that her man will be willing to do that for her in hard times or when she wants to start a family.

There are the kinds of girls, I meet them often enough in bars, who will chat you up for a drink and then move on to their mates. Maybe even come back and do it again later. I'll buy anyone a drink when I'm drinking. The barman, my mates, strangers at the bar, tramps in the street. Spread the party. If it happens to be a pretty girl all the better. I like pretty girls. I want them to come back later.

Giving people presents is it's own reward. It doesn't have to be some kind of deal. A gift. Freely given, freely taken. For the simple pleasure of making someone you want to be happier, happier.

When I go out on the town, I arm myself with presents. When I visit people, the same. A little something. Box of chocolates, bottle of wine, cigars, tequila, sweets and toys for the kids perhaps. It oils the wheels. Sets a good atmosphere. In MMO's I do the same. I squirrel away presents and items and money with the sole purpose of giving them to people. Sometimes they are specific items for specific people. A paladin sword for Peter the Paladin and sometimes just generic funstuff for random encounters. Fireworks or flowers. Alms for the poor.

If you feel everything in life simple must be trade off or an investment, or if it aggreives you when you think someone does better out of any deal than yourself, I suppose you could always remember that what goes around comes around. That sooner or later if you give enough people presents, you will meet someone who enjoys giving presents to you. Think of it as canvassing, be nice to as many people as you can and see which ones are nice back. Perhaps you will attract a dependant even. Someone who needs you. Someone who makes you feel all strong and manly.

It isn't really a "deal" and I don't consider such actions the role of a "victim". Rather that of a provider. It's as much a demonstration of strength. A flutter of the eyelids or standing a little bit too close might be a demonstration of a girls ability to dominate men's will. But then, I like to have girls brushing up against me when I drink....and if that's all it takes I'm perfectly capable of getting what I like.

When you give people stuff, in game or out, it is a demonstration of your affection. I like girls, I like girls to know I like them and I like the girls I know to feel they are those special kinds of girl that men want to give presents to.

There is no deal. No expectation of sexual favours. It's simple communication. I like you. I like you so much, I brought you a present.

God I miss those days of gaming more then anything.   So many fun times.   All the guys were polite and curtious.   Most were real ex-soldiers and some were still in and only back for abit and back out they'd go.  :(   Now don't get me wrong...sometimes they could get crude and joke around the way a group of guys will and when things didn't go all that hot for us you'd hear a little profanity and when that happend you could hear them most of the time bite their lip and apologize.   Not that I really cared...I've been around long enough to feel comfortable around a group of guys.  All in all I loved every minute I spent with them all.  Best group of gamers I have ever had the pleasure of gaming with for 3 years.   God it was awesome!

I don't care what gender or who ever playes the game. I'm here to play to games, not build social relationships to real people. I do create sometimes friendship with players, but it still just anonymous trough they characters. I play games to have fun and get away from real world booring stuff. If I wanna create real world contacts, I do it in real world, with real people.

I don't think I've ever asked someone about their gender online. I often pick female avatars if they look better than the male counterpart, but I still use male names and nicks based on my real life ones. I don't roleplay, and I don't "pretend" to be a female. Why so many people take such great offense by this is completely beyond me. The only reasonable explanation I've managed to come up with so far is that some people expect to build relationships while playing these games, and get frustrated when they can't tell who's what.

The best has to be when I was on my female CoH character and asked if my gf could join the party. After asking if I was a lesbian or male, half the party freaked out and started ranting about "people like me" who "pretend to be girls on the internet", "just to get treated better and get free stuff".

Diferrent people treat gender fakers diferrently. Some don't care, some don't like it.

Saying that female character looks better, looks strange for me. Of course, female looks better than male for 99% of male population, if they are not gay.

But if you want to look like female, that is a person's problem. You will be treated like female, if your character is a female. It could be some type of men who secretly want to be women... i don't know. I am male, and i didn't have a single female character in my long gaming history. Because i am Male.

And i don't want to play and chat with a sexy looking female who is actually a male pretending to be a female. Be a man, for gods sake :)

    Great question,

I never thought about it until now.

But having thought about it, to me it doesn't matter what sex operates the toon, you can usually tell pretty quickly if another player ,of either gender ,is gonna help or hinder your gaming.

I assumed (until now) that your personality in RL will shine through in game- good or bad- selfish or generous, mature or imature, gender is irrelevant, unless your looking for more from a friendship struck up in game. Otherwise what does it matter really?

I started playing WoW in December 2004, about a month after it was released.  My first character was a male Troll Warrior which I got to lvl 60.  I found that about a quarter of the people I grouped with for instances were really creeps; many were angry, beligerent and some cursed non-stop.  I then tried a male Elf Hunter and found a very similar pattern of behavior when questing in groups.  I got this Elf up to lvl 43 and then decided to try my own "social" experiment.  I rolled a female Elf Hunter on the same server to see if I was treated any differently.  Now I didn't take notes, so my experiment could in no way pass any test of hard evidence, but I know that people as a whole were much nicer to my female hunter then they were to my male hunter.  I quit the experiment when I got "her" up to lvl 40.  I'm convinced that had this character been male, the interactions would have been generally much less sociable.

I've roleplayed characters since the first PnP games like D&D, Traveller, Top Secret, Metamorphosis Alpha, Gamma World, etc. Then online from Legends of Kesmai, EverQuest, etc to DDO and Vanguard today. I'm a guy and have played male and female characters over the years, but generally my mains have been females.

Why? I enjoy the challenge of being someone I am not. It is easy to play who you are, but much more difficult to roleplay someone who you are not. The greatest compliments I've heard over the years playing online is when after I've been in character for a period of time and then when I tell others that I am a guy. More times than not, I hear the response that they had no idea.

To me roleplaying is like being a writer or an actor. There are both male and female writers who have written great characters of the opposite sex. I enjoy writing and my experiences roleplaying the characters that I write about make it much easier. A couple of writers off the top of my head for example include: "Friday" by Robert A. Heinlein and the Honor Harrington series by David Weber.

So, why is it that writers who have main characters that are opposite their sex are alright and gamers who roleplay the opposite sex are not? You never know who really is on the other side of that character you meet online . . .

I posted this in that other news topic on how to spot a gender faker:

"I can't say this is a good article on how to spot a gender faker. Everyone is different and have their own ways of expressing themselves. I know many females who do some of the things that were listed in article. It never means that they are a faker in any kind of way. There is a whole lot of girls (in the anime scene) who do say *tee hee* loves to show off, dance, etc. Basically, I'd say either male or female, let them have their fun. If they try to gain somthing for nothing, karma always come's back to get them in the end.

My sister plays MMO's and she acts very jolly in game and such, yet their are always guys and girls out there looking for other people to prove themselves. Yeah I seen actual femals trying to find out if my sister is an actual female. It's crazy. In all truthfulness I don't there there is no real way to tell if someone is who they seem to be. Most of the real ways takes paience and not assumption, becuase what if your wrong? Then you just messed yourself up. In all honestly I don't think you should worry about these kinds of things. If you don't then you wouldn't need to worry about such things.

Instead someone needs to make an articale on equal treatment (to spot people who just want your items/money and who is not trying to use you) rather than how to spot a gender faker. It's a MMORPG for craying out loud. Gotta chill. With people trying to spot gender fakers it makes things less fun. Also female characters play male characters so what about that. Just not valid. Show people how to tell who their friends are and who is just there to use and abuse than rather making somthin like this. I find THAT kind of infomation more vaulable to the MMO community than trying to play the guessing game."

Honesty it dosen't really matter unless you want to get to know someone.

The rule for me is to just assume everyone is a guy irl.

That way you will treated equally even if you are female.no free stuff no loot rights over anyone.

in my experience though, problems come about a lot with ts or vent and special treatment does exist toward female toons.but if she has a sexy voice i understand sometimes especially if the guild leader is single.

hey it's not like if i'm dueling a female char and somehow lose or a female headshots me or something i can't believe it really was a female;like i said i just assume everyone is a guy.

problem solved as long as you don't let them have loot rights or give them too much free stuff.

Agree. People complain about female toons pretending to be female getting freebees from male players. But I say fair enough. It the people who give free stuff to G.I.R.L.(Guy In Real Life)'s fault. They are the idiots who think a GAME is a dating service, so deserve to get screwed not in the way they where hoping, the sad acts. Everybody else thinks its just a game and so fair play to play whatever they want as, do you go giving free-bees to the elves only to get upset when you find out they are not elves in real life?
