Real time combat

KrebulKrebul Member Posts: 46

The future of MMO's is looking very promising.  The direction that Funcom is taking things with Age of Conan has got me very optimistic.  Depeneding on the sucess of AoC, we could see a slew of next generation games borrowing this concept as well as improving upon it.

There may be a day where an MMORPG and an FPS and Mortal Kombat are indestinguishable.  A man can dream cant he?  ;)

been waiting for this gametype for a LOOOOONG time in MMOs. this type of combat is what makes Morrowind/Oblivion great, and i've been waiting for somebody to implement it in an MMO. it sucks how long i've waiting, and how much longer we will have to wait...AoC will be the first in this type of MMO (that i know of), and if others are to follow, then they'll have to change their entire gameplay or start from scratch...years...

it's...scary. very, very, very, scary...the world we live in...that's why i love the virtual world.

RYL has it--you can play it now while you wait.

You can see some gameplay videos at the link below

Real time combat is very hard in MMOG's, because real worlds distance restrictions. The problem is the time delay between game server and customers client. Example if there is 50ms time delay between server and You, You only get MAX of 20FPS. Bigger the delay, more delay in You actions.

In some CS like games, there is so many servers around the world, that You can allways find some server very close to You. With MMOG's You choises are a lot less, because the companies can't put they servers so that they are all over the world. It just cost too much, having a few choises is all what they can do.

Yeah, it's hard, and amazing that RYL works as well as it does.  3,000 on a server is about max, which is why it could never have gotten huge like WoW.  Regional servers helps, but part of the fun is playing at the same time with people all over the world.

RYL is especially impressive considering that in BF2 with a max of 64 players on a server as soon as someone logs in with a ping over 200, things get real bad and you can hardly play.

Still, 3 new games do have real-time combat:  Age of Conan, Tabula Rasa and Chronicles of Spellborn.  They may end up with regional servers.

One thing that will help is that so many people are getting bigger pipes.

Yeah because RYL is as advanced as BF2. The amount of packages RYL sends per player is far lower than in BF2. RYL doesn't have any sort of psychics calculation. There is only gravity and coalition with objects and terrain. As for combat, either you hit or you don't. No hitboxes, no nothing.

You want to compare RYL to other MMOs, not BF2.

High latency doesn't equal low fps, it equals warping, stuttering and the general lag we know. Low fps equals higher  latency than you would have got with better fps.
