It all depends. If I am invited to a closed beta where I am expected to actually test the code and attempt to find holes etc, then no since I am doing the software developer a service.
On the other hand, If I join an open beta, uninvited, where I am not expected to test the code but just preview the game, then I might pay a reasonable fee.
====================== It's just me, so open the door.
i alpha/beta test, i expet the minimum of being free, if not getting payed
the open betas the MMOGs have are not really for testing, they are more a preview (demo) for the game.
ive done gametesting for ubisoft and i can tell you, you need to really but really test it,
like run through the hole game (or map) just runing into walls see if you go through or running into corners see if you fall off the map, and you do that to the point where you dont want to ever see that game anymore!
Me pay to test a game? Not going to happen. In some cases I believe a gaming company should pay the testers (such as extended time helping test a game, amount of bugs found and submitted), but for most situations the standard closed/open betas are the way to go. To me, if a company asks for money to test a game, it shows either they are having trouble getting financing for their game idea or it could be an attempt to scam people into believing their game is better by offering the "special" means of getting in to test it. When I see a game asking me to pay to test I move on, not wanting to be left out in the cold if and when the game development is stopped or the company shuts its doors.
You pay to test a game, you may be sorely disappointed in what you get out of the bargain.
getting paid to be a beta test now that is funny(above post)
here's the thing about paid beta tests. anyone loyal enough to buy your game after beta will be scared off from it. you do pay for a complete product don't you.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Whats so funny about it? If you do a job for someone in the real world, you expect to be paid, right? It all comes down to time and effort.
Example = You accept an invite to alpha/beta test a game for a company. You really like the game, so you put in an extra effort to help test it, reporting every single bug/error ingame you can find. You also spend 4-5 hours a day (28-35 hours a week, legal part-time status in most states). Don't you feel that if you did a good job, and actually helped change or fix things in a testing phase you ought to be paid? Do you go out and work for someone all week long for free? I really doubt it.
Unfortunately, most players I've met in testing are in just in to "play" a new free game before anyone else. IMO companies should only keep testers once they have been verified sending in reports, and kick the free-riders out. And this goes for all testing as they lengthen the time made to develop a game due to not helping test it. Just look at some recent releases that had more players in testing than after release. Monitor who sends in reports, and who doesn't. Simple.
And yes, before I am asked, I have been paid before to test games. 2 to be exact. You just need to act professional, and do the job they ask.
If you wanna pay for beta then take a look at the many SOE titles! They have just acquired a new title and it has POTENTIAL!!!!!!!! So sub up and get testing, and in six months you can pay to test the new expansion pack too! Paying to beta test rocks!!! Right?

I payed to beta 1 game for like $3 for the 2 month session. It was actually pretty good. The $3 took care of alot of annoying people in the community, the customer service for a beta was phenomenal, and the community itself wasn't as closed off as you sometimes get in MMOs. Like people wouldn't restrict themselves solely to thier own guild and they would constantly communicate.
Long ago folks were paid by the company themselves to test software as well as games. There are those that are still around that remember when we were paid to do what folks are doing now for "free" . Given the past few years state of released game, no wonder the released shape is what was released to the paying public that bought it anyway.
What stuns me still, is those that see even "open beta" and buy it anyway bugs warts and all then get on the forurms and blast the companies for releasing the pile of crap they release.

We have to nip this in the bud.
I don't pay money for beta software and I wouldn't pay money to beta test them either.
Pay for a beta?
No thank you!
Me :P

Hello there, adventurer!
Round here, they pay you.
It's a pretty low paid job, but it beats MacDonalds.
Some small developers are already doing this and 9 out of 10 times they just end up taking the money and running.
NNNNNNNO!
