"Best" MMO Diablo Clone - Action/Hack'N'Slash

TalinTalin Member UncommonPosts: 923
Since I think most members of this forum agree Diablo I/II wasn't a true MMO, due to the lack of a graphical interaction between thousands of players, I'm using the name as a reference only.

I liked Diablo 2 for what it was, a fast-paced hack'n'slash adventure. I was curious if anyone in the community has played a MMO with these characteristics? I've seen Dungeon Runners (and beta'ed it briefly) and will try that again post-launch, but I'm sure there must be others out there. Any recommendations to try?

Thanks!

As an addition to my original post, has anyone ever tried Cronous? It seems to be a "Diablo-ish" MMO.
  • turnipzturnipz Member Posts: 531
Ive been searching as well; the only thing ive found was mythos which I havent played yet and isnt open to beta atm, and granado espada which was sort of close to the action but just not enough enemy so it just doesnt compare...

Dungeon runners didnt really do it for me, to few enemy variations and skills and bosses and stuff; maybe long into the future it will be good though.  Cronous is garbage, the graphics suck and the action is pretty weak; the skills also blow and are mostly crappy passives.

Im still waiting for a good action game... tell me if you find anything.

Dungeon runners is a good clone if you do not take it too seriously and have a laugh.. Oops you said you played it.

Hellgate: London is one you should keep your eye on.

Who knows when Blizzard will come out with Diablo 3 ?  I bet it is next up after starcraft 2.

Meh, I fail to see how hellgate london can deliver.  I mean you run around shooting guns where aiming isnt necessary which defys the point, and you fight maybe 4 enemies at once due to the mass amounts of lag the servers will have.  Doesnt seem very d2ish to me.

    Anyone played titan quest?

    Mythos is pretty good...

It's just like Diablo, but with a WoW kind of overlay.

Near zero character customization (it's still in alpha and this type of game generally doesn't have much), and get's pretty monotonous (which dungeon crawler doesn't?)

I played it, thought it was fun and pretty and had cool sounds and almoust compelling story and then one day, not long from the end I found myself lacking space on hard drive and deleted the game.

Hellgate: London is where the action's at.

It's made by former Diablo 2 Programmers, it's planned to be the "unofficial sequel"...sort of, in a new IP of course.

The Devs looked into what made Diablo 2 so great, improved those Points, smacked some neat DX10 Graphics on it, an voila, it'll be great ;)

I have TQ and it's expansion. Its a good game but it really doesn't get good until you beat it once and get to the higher difficulty. The first level of difficulty doesn't have many good items that drop. Your character is also not really mature until the higher levels. I loved the game though I am just not the kind of person to do the same thing over and over. There is a pretty good community to the game though. I would suggest TQ to anybody that enjoyed Diablo.

I have to admit that I only bought the original titan quest and not the expansion. But I think if something is not true anymore somebody will post about it.

I'm really begging you not to buy titan quest (new in store). It doesn't have a closed net like the battle.net and I think if we talk about such games in the mmorpg.com forum we have to make a point about it. A closed net costs money and if games without sell the same, then we will never see another battle.net. So to get future fun we have to be hard to ourselves and say no to this.

Now the game. The atmosphere is nothing like diablo, technically nice setting but boring. You combine classes so you will tend to use the same skills with different chars. You can't effetively make chars out of the box because attack skills sometimes are limited to the right mouse button, problems I never had with diablo though there were skills to put on right mouse only, but here it's annoying. Though you can cycle skills with mouse wheel, you can't customize and you never get back to origin (broken even in last patch, but surely not anymore with expansion though I don't know).

I suggest you wait for Hellgate London. You'll gain more anticipation for that kind of games if you don't play titan quest I guess. Though diablo 2 was my favorite game I didn't like titan quest in the least. Looked up official information about the expansion but it didn't impress me and there was no word of a closed net.

RYL, but one warning--once you play real-time, fpr gaming, you can't stand playing click-to-attack like Guild Wars and WoW again.

Watch the latest episode of "The Guild" and other Pwnage videos from around the net--also post your own: http://PwnerTV.com

I have been watching HGL for a while now with much anticipation. I'm normally not a fan of the whole post-apocalyptic setting, but the engine and features of the game really have me hooked.

My largest concern with HGL is the difference between the "free" version (after buying the retail box, of course) and the "monthly fee" version. I have no problem shelling out $10-$15/ a month for a game I enjoy, and that continues to offer expanding content, bug fixes, and the like, but they have to be very careful how they separate features to not alienate the playerbase.

I've also been watching Mythos, which appears to be an upgrade "Fate" designed as a basic MMO to test the network infrastructure that HGL will use. An interesting concept (I've applied for the alpha/beta with no luck thus far), but I wonder: when HGL comes out, does Mythos go away?

No, you don't need to fear about that. It's true, Mythos was sceduled to test the engine and 0ping without risk offering security for a smooth release of HGL. You also have to take into account that it offers easier access to 0ping. It's a 0ping-puller for people who don't buy HGL in store at release for whatever reason. And it's a sign for other game developers and publishers that 0ping is designed as a multigame platform and not only the HGL-internetmode.

Haven't found a single "action" MMO that felt as smooth as Diablo. Cronus was a pure MMO that tried to be Diablo and failed. Dungeon Runners has an awesome sense of humor, but noticeable lag even though the population is so low. Lunia gave me a glimmer of hope as being the MMO version of Gauntlet that I always dreamed of, but lag throws of the timing of combos and special moves making it almost unplayable.

As for non-MMOs.... Titan Quest is a well polished game but it feels totally generic. Dungeon Siege 2 is cool but there aren't many people playing it and reviewers turned their noses up to it once they saw the graphics. Fate.... Wild Tagent..... 'Nuff said. Fable is outstanding, but it has no online component.

There's obviously a market for this sort of thing. Why aren't any of the big development houses working on something like this?

I agree with most of your sentiments: Cronus was a great idea that was poorly implementd; DR's engine was flawed (even if its sense of humor was amazing), Titan Quest was a fun game but lacked a lot of the depth D2 had in terms of replayability and multiplayer. Fable was an amazing experience on the PC, but with no multiplayer it was a one-time-though and that was it.

Mythos seems to be the next contender, seeking to combine the single-player fun of Fate with an expanded multiplayer (MMO-ish) - all for free. I keep trying to find a way into alpha (or now, beta) to no avail. I really want  it to succeed, both for myself and all the other hack'n'slash fans out there.

There is most definitely a market for the HnS genre, specifically anything that can grab the diehard D2 crowd. Tons of people still play D2 to this day - almost a decade after release (I believe). Hellgate London will make a strong run at this group, and I hope they succeed!

Ok, ya twisted my arm. Downloading Lunia right now ;)

are you talking about his?  http://global.lunia.com/main.asp

I see it in closed beta, downloading might be a waste of time.

That's the one. I downloaded the client and registered an account on the very website you indicated - instant access to the game.

I had thought that it being listed as "Closed Beta" would stop me from playing, but i had no problems getting in. You have to make an account (which is actually through GameandGame, or something like that, and that was all).

Quick feedback on Lunia - I could not play the game because of the lag. Movements were rendered twice, although position was calculated correctly, so I kept overcompensating my movements and attacks due to the insane lag. I'll try again at an offpeak time, but for now, I couldn't actually play the game at all.

Still hoping for a way into Mythos.. here's to hoping for an Open Beta in the near future :).

That's a bummer, it must depend on your location then. My standard cable broadband speed from Connecticut, USA gets only a little bit of lag every now and again.

I'm a fan of DR and haven't noticed any lag.  However, I really don't see a lot of comparison to Diablo.  Sure it has some similar elements but it has a completely different environment and tone to it.  But, if it works for you, then it works!  To each his own.

    Happy gaming all

Im a big fan of dungeon runners, the community is nice, the game is a fun time sink and it has humor by making fun of named items. I laughed the first time I got a Sphincter Piercer of the Technicolor Rainbow.
