I wouldn't go as far as saying that I hate the game but I didn't like the direction the developers took it. A historical game should be just that, historical but PotBS is quite far from that. Flying labs took historical and wow'ified it.
You'll be surprised at somewhat how historically accurate it is. I'm not sure on this, but I believe they have added some "mythical" content that holds to ACTUAL myths dating to that time peroid, im pretty sure thats as fictional as it gets. I guess thats wow'ified huh?
As the head of the company recently said, "fun" is a higher priority over "accuracy". And I, for one, appreciate that.
Now, that doesn't mean they've thrown accuracy out the window. They're using real towns, real nationalities, and real ships. They won't put any flags or sails in the game that don't fit into the time period. The put in a feature the prevents you from understanding the language of an enemy nation. The map of the region is accurate. The references to the monarchs are accurate. It's historically based. The goods are historically correct. The music reflects the time period. Heck, they even held a beta-Christmas event based on the real celebrations of the time.
The "fun" is in the allowance of female and minority avatars. The removal rape and slavery. The time it takes to traverse large distances. Durability points for ships instead of "permadeath". Inaccurate, yes. Corrections necessary....IMO, no.
So, in essence, it's an Erroyl Flynn movie, instead of the 18th century journal of a british sailor. It's the "PIrates of the Carribbean" ride at Disney parks, instead of a section of the local whaling museum.
Is that so bad? And, really, if it was simply a PURE historical re-enactment of early 18th century life, , in MMO form, would it make it's money back? I doubt it.
People that play WOW cant play a game that reflects history like POTBS. They are fat, nerds who want to play fantisy games so that can feel like there life means somting...So sad... In fact this game will rock...There is none of that armor bs like +5 and so on. This game blows away all of that crap. It's the future of MMO and if you don't play it you will never know.
I admire that they went to great effort to keep it historical in some areas, but in some of the most important areas (at least to me) they opted out.
Combat
Ships simply will not be used the way they were meant to be historically because they are so easily replaced. Major aspects of naval warfare in the caribbean during the time period simply won't be reflected in PotBS. I guess PotBS just isn't the game I thought it was going to be, which leaves me disapointed considering the 'pirate' mmo market as of late is becoming saturated with depth-less games.

I understand that the combat isn't historically accurate....but how does that make it depth-less?
They mention it is comming out in June 2007, but if you read other current posts you'll find out its been pushed back to a unknown later date. (SO DON'T ASK)

I hope this game is successful but not so successful that it becomes a kiddie/elitist magnet.
