Xbox 360 Controller

I think it would be cool if you could use a Xbox 360 controller with this game. it would be perfect, you even could use the xbox mic to use the voice softwear.

I'm not in beta yet *jumps and waves for beta attention* but the gameplay has always looked like it would be console-friendly as well. Quite frankly, I'd love to have a choice of sitting at my desk or on the couch with a 360 controller and chatpad. Cross-platform is the new thing, and I'm looking at The Secret World (AoC and Huxley less so, but still worthy of attention) for that reason.

I think you can as long as the game supports joysticks, microsoft sells a  version of the xbox 360 controller works on both the 360 and most computers. Although it involves spending more money. www.microsoft.com/hardware/gaming/productdetails.aspx

yea i agree,  I thought i read some where that vista is supposed to allow you to use your 360 controller for games that supported it.

it would be especially cool if they made a set-up especially for those pc xbox controllers so you could somehow go through your specials and use some menues like quest log with the controller, like what they did with oblivion.

You can use a 360 controller right now with Microsoft's Xinput driver, as long as you either have a USB controller, a USB "charge & play" cable, or the wireless PC controller device. There's a 32bit (the one I just linked) and a 64bit version of Xinput.

In fact, Frets on Fire uses Xinput to get the Guitar Hero II for 360's guitar to work on the PC...

Yeah, it would be nice if DG included gamepad settings in the control options. DDO did that, and while I haven't tried it out yet, it sounds like it would be a comfy way to at least move around but you'd still need the keyboard to select skills, etc.

I don't really see the appeal to using a controller for this.

Maybe it's my firmly held believe that mouse/keyboard > controller.  Idk.

This game is going to have some FPS qualities, so you're gonna have to look/move around quickly.  Therefore, I'll stick w/ my PC.

For DDO the gamepad option worked pretty well, I used it once and a while back when I played the game, with the tendency of more MMORPGs these days to include a VOIP option, the need for a keyboard becomes less, that said, I myself still prefer keyboard and mouse to a gamepad for most FPS settings, but I suppose its just a matter of preference.

Using the 360 controller on your PC, fine. If this ever went cross platform I would drop it and never look back.

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

    EAT ME MMORPG.com!

Why? If nothing else, with it's minimalistic UI and heavy action shooter-inspired combat, TR would be the perfect cross-platform title.

Personally I'm looking forward to the day 360's finally get some good MMOG's. I don't always feel like sitting at my desk, sometimes I'd rather get the MMO experience lounging on the couch on an HDTV.

"Console" only means dumbed-down if devs dumb it down. And don't give me the "consoles are for the kids" argument either, one look at WoW, Counterstrike, and countless others proves otherwise.

Porting a game to the console isn't a simple thing to do. Then they would have to deal with the Live infrastructure... I don't see that happening.

As for a gamepad of some sorts for this game... it does seem feasible. I used to play FFXI with a gamepad and loved in. Being able to play an MMO with a gamepad is great.... you can just sit back in your chair and relax while playing. Especially since I sit in-front of a computer all day, using a gamepad instead of a keyboard for games is nice.

If the controls are simple enough to use for a gamepad, I'm sure we'll hear about it when the NDA is lifted.

But porting to a 360 is easier than most consoles since the 360 is essentially a PC in a shiny console wrapper.

And no, they wouldn't be dealing with Live whatsoever. That's the main difference between Silver and Gold membership levels on Live -- and it's going to come under fire once the 360 sees some MMOGs that people are interested in (Age of Conan, Huxley, The Secret World) -- that Silver members can already play MMOGs since those games don't use Microsoft's XBL services whatsoever, you get transferred over to the MMOG servers. If you're a Gold member, you're paying Microsoft for the XBL services they provide to you, and you'll also have to pay the MMOG publisher for their services. You said you did FFXI on the 360, so you're familiar with that already. But Silver members, while they can't use XBL to play multiplayer on normal 360 games, are able to play MMOGs.

You still have the problem of the XBox360 running on a different CPU than PCs run on.  If NCSoft used a dev-kit that supported running on both platforms it would be super simple to move between the 2 systems.  But I'm guessing they used some custom dev-kit (you have to target a console from the start or plan on rewriting a lot of the graphics code).  Though the XBox360 has similiarities to Windows, don't mistake it as a windows machine in a pretty box.

As for XBL, that one I didn't know.  That would for sure make life easier.  I was only away of the process they used for the first XBox, where developers were completely tied to using XBL to do online gaming.

You dont think the fact that they recommend 2gigs of Ram would be a problem for the xbox?

System requirements for the PC don't apply to the consoles in the same way. The PS2 had a whopping 32 MB of RDRAM look at what it could pull off. Morrowind recommends 256 MB while it played fine on the Xbox which had 64.

Exactly, on the 360 you don't have to worry about running XP or Vista underneath the game, plus whatever other apps the user has running in the background, as well as accounting for a myriad hardware combinations. Plus the 360 has USB so keyboards and mice can also be used in addition to the gamepads, and TR has its own proprietary voicechat so the 360 headset would work there as well. It's all totally doable, as Age of Conan, Secret World, and Huxley will be demonstrating within the next 6-12 months.
