And this isn't targeted at the OP, since she says herself she isn't one of those she-devil man hating woman power girls, but rather just a rant in general.
Wow, again, the hypocricy knows no bounds, anyone else detecting a pattern here? Vanboi to the Nth degree...

It's really not the term "brotherhood" that bothers me, because honestly, I could care less. What kinda urks me is that there is ENTIRE host of alternatives terms of phrase for this specific feature and they STILL decide to name it somewhat gender specific. I don't find it sexist as much as I find it plain ass lazy.
Mind you I'm fairly habitualized to the little stuff like this now, been gaming with boys far to long to know that they just simply do not think of these "types" of things.

See that's just it...they don't think.  j/k  OMG I'm going to get fried for that one - watch.  Anyway...I have been called a bit of a tomboy all my life by guys, maybe because I tend to hang with the "guys" in their little cliques and am accepted by them so readily because I like to be with "guys" and I find gaming with them fun.   With that being said I am not, I repeat, not a feminazi, I just thought that SOE didn't even bother to think about word choice "at all" and seemed to neglect the fact that, "yes Joe...there really are female gamers." and decided to go with a term with the conatation that these games are designed by guys for guys(hence booby sliders and jiggle vision) and there is no female gamers.   ::sighs::   I've been at odds with game designers over this topic for a long time.  Not just the use of certain words but also their lack of foresight when designing their games.  Guy gamers are all for us girls to play these games, but if we so much as make a suggestion that implies it should be gender friendly - well we crossed this weird line of you can play but only by our terms.    For instance EA is never going to add female avatars to a game like "BF2".   Which really annoys me to no end.   They don't even reply to e-mails regarding the topic.

Anyway...what does it matter the guys(males) will never see it from our point of view.    I'll shut up about this now.   Seems I was wrong to think that guys would even be somewhat sympathetic to this issue.

first i have a feeling like someone else statet the name Fellowships had to go due to name reconision with LotrO which as far i can tell have abit more right to call themselfs fellowships as its part of their Lore, Vanguard has its own lore..it does? Yes it does. Anyway i think it fully your right to open up a discussion like this, like also someone else said "what if it was named sitster-hood, well i'm sure allot of males will jump onto forums and yell/kick/scream that it can not be that way. So nothing wrong with a topic opend by a female to adress her sort of issue. But like many post it gets smacked by the ignorant "m.m.a.I." gamers.

Afcourse i will say i never give it that much thought cause of being male but you have a good point and honostly dunno why this could not be easyly implemented, i mean i don't see drastic complet re-written software needed for something like this. And it might stand out from the norm and atract those that feel themselfs to much in a male dominated gameworld so it might even work out for the better. Also not given it thought with BF2 and that is actualy strange as female's in the army isn't something incrididle rare or new and BF2 is suppose to be modern warfare. Think it might even be a miss to not adress that in modern games especialy. Vanguard team could try and bring in Jade Raymond

Brotherhood is a neuter word. Asexual/genderless/not masculine/not feminine.

Teala, youre dragging us ladies back into the dark ages making a deal over this issue. (Not to mention showing a general lack of understanding English grammar).

Not liking the term "Brotherhood" is perfectly acceptable; attaching gender to a genderless word is not

I don't know, she may have a point though, with so many  big boobed DE female"SHIMS" running around ingame a person can't tell nowadays. Since I have been in Vanguard, I have met the most real life females playing in any MMO I have ever been in (exception being EQ2).

When they say "brotherhood", I don't think in terms of female MMOERS, I think  of guys who play girls (SHIMS) ingame.

And what is the deal with guys playing female characters and naming them, "Candy,Delicious,Delilah,Morganna? I have found these to be the most typical "SHIM" names picked in a game.

Okay sorry for that off topic reply/ducks from the tomatoes.

After re-reading this thread i noticed something. For someone concerned reguarding sexism and sexual-exploitation over video-games ; You  , Teala, make alot of sexist comments reguarding men, in your replies. Just abit ironic isn't it ?

Now back to point you keep missing, it's not an SoE issue. It's a language issue, brotherhood is not a gender endering term. Brotherhood is an association of people, who share a bond as strong as siblings. Brothers ( or sisters ) tend to have stronger bonds emotionally than just mere friends tend to. Brotherhood is an association of people who grant a sibling type bond among the people in it's fraternity. Simple as that.

Now if you want to know why brother, instead of sisterhood you'll need to do homework concerning Cultural histories around the world, and the development of languages as influenced by cultural phenominon.

There is a lot of gender neutral words which they could have used I guess. Maybe all SOE could come up with is "fellowship" and its already taken ?

Though given these games are mostly  played by male the language is most likely not contested by many people and therefore unlikley to be challenged or changed or cause mass leaving. ( Though vanguard could do with all the subs its gets at the moment it seems.. no offense people!) Of course if  female gamers unite and challenge it.. though then they may face a back lash.

Personally if I was a female gamer, I'd just go with it and promote visibilty and challenge blatent sexism online which is more likely to garner support. Plus ( a weak plus) "brotherhood "though visibilty of female gamers could become much seperate from the image in most peoples minds a become unbound from male bias and

Its all semantics in the end and visibility of online female gamers is more important. *

    * though this is an ironic statement to make as the whole concept of sex and gender becomes unbound in online environments.. how many guys play female toons ? How many quiet sensitve guys in RL turn into raging homicdal morons online ?

I personally I feel these subjects should be left out of my video gaming; seeing as though its one of the last remaining, semi-unmolested, mediums. I don't think that SOE went out of their way to insult female gamers. If thats the way you feel then I think you are being a bit hypersensitive. I ran around with pink armor for 3 months in EQ2, it wasnt my favorite but I dealt with it.

    LOL, Good one.

Also, I'm a guy and I have to agree that 'brotherhood' does indeed come off sounding 'male-centric.'

It's not really a question of the pure definition of the word - but rather the fact that it's silly to use it in this case.

I don't think you sound like a femi-fascist. I thought the same thing the second I read about the change.

It has nothing to do with politically correct BS and everything to do with the fact that it's just plain stupid.

    Anyway....

you posted this same crap on the vg official forums; cut and pasted, i'd wager.

get over it and wipe your eyes.

its a non-gender term in this context. like mankind, manhole, human, and oh-boy! as in, oh, boy! does this chick have too much time on her hands or what?

Nope, I would join any brotherhood guild ect blah blah.  Really dont care for real life stuff in gamming.  Not to sound like a anti- politically correct person hrm.... wait I am oh well.    I dont think that games should have to worry about such nonsence.   Really back in time or when most games are set it would be plan out left to start making the gamming environment feminist . . They know woman play why do you think social stuff is in gamming ect ect.  I mean really really think about it would you want them to go through every game out there and change it to being politically correct ? Dont ya think we got enough of that already. I play mmos to get away from the very thing you are talking about. So,  I guess that means Nope they can call what ever they like anything they want. Im a strong enough woman to handle it.  I dont even notice stuff like that .

The first thing that comes to my mind when I think brotherhood is courage, loyalty, honor, trust  depending on one another LOL not men.

Yea, they should call it a Sisterhood. I'd wager only pansies play this game, anyways. I'm on your side.

    Yeah Teala, whats with that?

It's ok for you to feel strongly about something but gods forbid anyone else with an opposing view is allowed the same respect. Shame on you.
