Computers no more productive than 20 years ago?

Interesting read that compares an 1986 Mac Plus to a 2007 dual core AMD desktop.



Too bad our software is slowing down our computers faster than we can improve the hardware.

At the moment I'm rendering something in Bryce whime I'm listening to a playlist on Winamp. In my taskbar is an unfinished Flash project that contains numerous video files, one in a resolution of 1024x768 pixels. When I'll start working on that I'll open two word files concerning the project.

I also have two firefox screens open.

Doing all of these things simulataniously doesn't slow my comp down.



In other words. I can be much, much more productive with a "modenr" comp than with that old comp. Why? I can process more data for one. I can edit a whole movie for gods sakes. I don't see that old thing doing that. It's an unfair comparison? No, it's not. If you tie someones legs and have them crawl versus someone who doesn't have legs then the legless guy will probably win, being more used to the task. Boy that was a crappy comparison.

Anyways. The power of modern computers is that they can do many things at the same time.

There isn't a way to write a script faster with newer computers, because you can only type so fast. Even if you dictate you are slower than someone typing. But imagine you're working on a movie. You can write the script, chat (or phone) with people you're making it with, browse the net for equipment and locations, render something (for example a logo) all at the same time.

Same if you're making a game. Or any other thing you can do with a comp.





In short, modern computers are better.
