I have a few ideas, Adventure Quest can be an interesting diversion, but its not really a true, MMORPG. It requires no download, plays in a browser and has regular content updates, but there is not any real player interaction. If you don't mind paying for a MMORPG, UO, is interesting although, some people feel the newer expansions have taken a lot out of the game, as far as the sandbox feel.
Hm, I don't know if you're open to this or not but.. There is this game, the characters and such are 3-D. However, the actual game allows you to only move the camera Left to Right. It's on a Horizontally Skewed plane that you play on, in that way it looked like a 3-D and a 2-D game. Just a suggestion, the 2-D resembling play was actually why I couldn't play it, but you might like it.
Eudemons: http://www.eudemonsonline.com/ - 2D Isometric, though it seems to fake it at times, try it out! It is fast paced, but I warn you... It can get repetitive.
