Honestly i wouldnt recommend it to noobies, i (played since 2000) dont even enjoy it anymore...i quit the game and came back and everything was different now, it made me realize that i wasted money re subscribing...if you start out new there would be so many things for you to do, if you're serious (playing 4+ hours a day) you might be able to make it in this game...but you have SO MUCH to catch up to...hardcore raiders finish expansion progression fairly quick i'd say about 3-4 months but they raid 5-6 days a week 6+ hours...thats how fast they want to finish the expansion storyline...now i know what im saying might be intimidating for you to start this game, but thats just how fast its moving now days...all the old progressions dont even matter anymore, you'll have to find pick up raids to complete em or just skip them and try to experience the new zones and catch up to the "current" expansion...
You be much better off trying something like world of warcraft if you are new to mmo. I played everquest for 6 years. I wouldnt call it a good game to learn on. Good luck in what ever game you choose to play
Agree to all above. Its not a game that caters to the casual. I suggest LoTR, WoW for a newbie to MMO's that have large populations. You'll just be frustrated playing EQ1.
Otherwise, if you wanna experience it for the sake of it, feel free, perhaps it is for you and you will enjoy it like many of us still do. For the price with all expansions, it is the best deal around!

I think I'd suggest maybe Lord of the Rings Online, World of Warcraft, or EverQuest 2 instead.
