if the Halo3 beta is any representation of the final release, i will be playing the single player through once and then throwing it away. i will then be looking to get back into an EQ style MMORPG. i havent kept up with MMORPGs since i left EQ almost 6 years ago, save for the occasional peep of the Leroy Jenkins or SouthPark jabs at WoW, so i dont really know what the pipeline of options looks like. i want to get into the next big thing on opening day. basically, i am looking for recommendations. TIA!
also, i will updating my computer hardware soon to prepare, so what kind are you guys finding are a good average set of specs (processor, video card, RAM, ect...) i keep hearing alot about this dual core processing. what's that all about?

World of Warcraft is a game similiar though less time consuming then Everquest.
Warhammer Online is going to be more like Dark Age of Camelot I guess, but it has a similiar type of structure.
Vanguard Saga of Heros is somewhat like EQ though it hasn't done very so well. It was made by the same people who made original EQ.

SWG - PrePub9 Jedi mastered all professions - June 26th 2003 > Nov 15th 2005
EVE Online - 24 million SP - May 6th 2003 > Early 2005
PlanetSide - BR20 CR5 - May 23rd 2003 > Sept 2003
Of course they are, but due to the fact that new servers are put into existing server battleground groups to equal out the playing field you will still more than likely be put into a BG group with twinks, no avoiding that.
I might suggest not warding off your addiction from one game to another, I had the issue with a pretty insane addiction to WoW for a few years. I won't go into details, but after I realized it was time to let WoW go I moved onto more casual games, ones that didn't have as much content. Sure, it's been almost nothing but dissapointment.. but i'm getting more things done now.

well, then i guess i just wait for the next big thing then.
and i know what you mean about getting more things done. after EQ, i finished my MBA and went on to knock out a second masters degree. started and became established in my career. bought a house and got married and all of that other good chit. the console games have held me steady all of those years, but now that is everything is established and the console offering continues to weaken, i am ready for another fling with a solid MMO
hope something is coming out soon
Lord of the Rings Online is the only new game out that is like Everquest. I don't think equipment is such a big deal in the game at the moment though.
War Hammer is comming out at the beggining of next year and you can apply for closed beta right now. Thats probably going to be the best new game to go for that is somewhat like EQ.
I agree about EQ2. The game just wasn't for me. Vangaurd is more like the original EQ though I didn't really get into it either.
Warhammer: Age of Reconing Emphasis on War between player factions. PvP or RvR endgame similar to DaoC.
Pirates of the Burning Sea Historical fiction of a post naval war era where conscripted sailors were no longer needed by the militaries of the world and became privateers or pirates. I think this will be a sleeper success.
Age of Conan Interesting targeted combat system, mature title because of blood and gore finishing or fatality moves.
Huxley First person shooter with lots of players and lots of battlegrounds. Think BF2142 with different character classes and way more player customization and missions. 100vs100 player battles with a persistant towns.
Tabula Rasa Another shooter that will allow many players to play. I don't know much about it but it is getting equal hype as Huxley.
Think either WAR or AoC will be the MMOs to play for the next few years. But there will be some good alternatives. If you just want the PvE aspect of EQ then those types of games are already out. EQ2, Vanguard, LotRO, WoW, ect... But, the next round of games seems to be the alternative to PvE grind and raiding endgame. That is why I am waiting. I do not want a PvE quest/raid game.
