After a long hiatus, I want to come back to FFXI. The only problem I'm having is what class to pick. Before, I was a Galka redmage (ok, you can stop laughing, but i made it work). I ended up having a really hard time finding groups to party with, saying that redmage was not as important as a white or black mage. I just wanted to see if any of that has changed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

After it gets refresh.
With the correct equipment any race can play any job effectively.
there is and always has been a shortage of tanks and healers. With so many high level players, peeps are now getting power levelled ,but there is still a number of players doing it the way it was meant by forming a party.
Paln your long term goal, what is going to be fun for you?Your best option is to not try and beat the system.Galkans do NOT make good mages, there Mp is terrible. At the same time tarus do not make good tanks as there HP are terrible. If you want to be versatile and pl;ay almost all jobs ,then you should pick a mithra/hume.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Refresh: lvl 41
I would recommend hume as your race. It's not the best for MP, but you seem very uncertain. Hume is the "medium in everything" race. As hume you can play anything, so race wouldn't be a problem if you change job. And whatever your job is, other players will accept you. Hume is the only race I would recommend if you plan on playing several different jobs, which you probably will if you stay very long in Vana'diel.
No matter what equipment you use, galka is not a race I would recommend at all if you plan on playing any mage jobs.
I'm a hume. My 3 highest jobs atm are: WHM75, DRG59 and RDM43. No one has ever told me that being a hume is bad when playing those jobs, nor when playing any other job. I also have several jobs at lvl 37.
Btw, RDM is a very poplular party member, at least on my server, Fenrir. The only "negative" side of being a RDM, is the lack of WHMs. Sure, you get more party invites since you are asked to main heal, but you won't be as much the enfeebler as a RDM should be.
