So after playing WarRock and Rakion (finally got around to that one) in the last couple of weeks I think I've played every single f2p MMO'ish game that doesn't have one of the two major combat mechanics.
Namely the EQ and Diablo combat systems. So no autoattack+hotkey nor just clickyclickyclickyclicky.
Here's my unofficial and hopefully incomplete list. As well as some observations.
ATC-Raycrash (pagn) *RIP*
Kwon Ho (ijji)
Space Cowboy (several portals)
Gunbound (ijji)
Gunz (softnyx/ijji)
Rakion (softnyx)
Infinity Online (gamengame) *RIP*
Warrock (warrock.net)
So my first question to the community at large is, have I missed any games? If so please tell me. I know there are some in CB's and foreign language only versions out there but I'm not counting those. Secondly, why do you all figure these games seem to do so poorly when compared to all the boring same old same old EQ/L2/RO whatever we're calling them clones. I swear every month or two it seems like everyone is excited about the next Scions of Fate, Corum, Flyff or Priston Tale or whatever. I d/l it, I see its the same stupid gui we've been using since '98 and the exact same boring combat. I can't stand autoattack anymore, and something like DungeonRunners does nothing but make me feel like finding my D2 cd's. So what's there to play at this point. Or do I just wait for the various beta's -WAR, AoC, TR, Huxley, APB, Esteel, Chronicle of Spellborn and the like and pray?

Personally I think granado espada is good simply due to controlling 3 characters gives it more interactivity, and if you play elementalist you can actually aim spells; however the melee attacks are automatic which would suck if not for the fact your controlling 3 guys at once thereby making it impossible to do.Its also got a lot of rooms full of mobs just like in diablo 2.
So ya other than that theres just mythos and whatever else comes in the future. Mythos is from the diablo 2 makers you should be able to see videos of it on youtube by searching for "mythos online" however before I hype you up to much its not currently playable as shown at their website.
(edit) One more thing, granados espada is in open beta right now so its free however it will most likely become p2p in the future, if you have a problem with that.
Gotta love a cheap person who plays free games and then complains about them
Try Roma Victor or Second Life. Both have interesting game play. Now how you define 'interesting' may be different than how I define it.
Oh, you could try Runescape.

A cheap person? Not sure where you get that from. Unfortunately there aren't any p2p games with interesting combat mechanics besides EvE which I have played quite a bit (launch and several return visits). I've played pretty much every AAA title except SWG, EQ2, DDO and AA, with the latter titles being so bad that I would argue they dont even qualify as top tier. So please take you cheap assumption and shove it.
Free (Asian) games are the only ones out atm trying to bring new content to the table, that is just a sad fact.
I do appreciate the suggestions however, Roma Victor may warrent a look. Although the gameplay videos on youtube were not encouraging. SL is no go, I'll leave that game to the pedo's and the furries. Also I've heard the gui can make your eyes bleed.
I remember my younger brother playing a great deal of runescape I never got the immpression it had anything interesting going on under the hood. Also it was very grindy and looked like claymation.
@Turnipz: Yeah I played a great deal of the GE beta, but really I spent most of my time just setting up my party and then alt tabbing the game. It lends itself heavily to /afk gameplay imo. Thanks anyways though.
I guess there really just aren't any interesting games that I've totally missed. Which is too bad. But the LCD wants more EQ fantasy rehashes and they are the majority. Good thing there are old favorites like CS and D2 to tide me over and if I ever really need a MMO I can always resub to WoW or EvE...
Dissapointing but not a huge surprise.
I love the way Tabula Rasa does it, but I can’t go into details
There is something to be said for the CoX gameplay mechanics, and I have had quite a bit of fun playing CoV. I wish I had played it before the endurance changes. I found there was too much waiting for powers to recharge.
Its not really about chaotic combat (otherwise D2 would be sure winner) as much as combat that is interesting and engrossing. For example the holy grail of MMO combat might be Soul Caliber III combat in a massive persistant setting by this metric. Not to say making it like a fighting game is the only means to an end but SC3 combat is fun because the combat is challenging and visually responds to what you are doing. You have to be "good" at it.
Auto-attack + hotkey is a hold over from when none of us had broadband so there was no way to do anything but make the combat basically a turn based system to make dealing with lag issues easier. Its stale and stupid and leads to boring pve -honestly how often are you playing WoW while watching tv? Its not engrossing, you are playing it for the lewt and nothing more. The "achiever" mentality is something most MMO gamers will grow out of and when they do they will reach the point I'm at, boredom w/ the same old same old.
