If your motivation is to play FFXI is because of the console games, then I would ignore this and move on.  This game is basically Everquest with Chocobos, nothing like the previous FF's.

If you are a fan of the series,  you should go ahead and try it, it is a very nice experience and a whole new different take from the console games. in order to play through the game's story quests along with lvling you will need to party as early as lv 15 or so, it's basically impossible to lv solo, just need a bit of patience and some time in your hands to wait for party invite, but when it happens you'll very much like it, parties can last for hours, as you lv you will gain new stuff, unlock new quests which are very rewarding,  there is also the crafting system which can be used for money, also another thing which can be very rewarding GIL wise if you do  it right, people tend to say it's impossible to craft and make money, but don't listen to them, they just tend to be impatient and lazy and want it the easy way, If you are new to pc gaming and are very much used to console games, i'd say try to get a pc game controller, it would be much easier, as can be overwhelming the controls.
