Hey, I recently started an Illusionist as my first character and then was told that they are not a very good class. Is this true and if so what is a good and easy to find a group class?
Illusionists are not weak, the illusionists in our guild can dish out some really nice dps (in raids they allways outparse the coercers and i also have seen them do more dps than wizards/warlocks in some fights), they are a nice support class with good crowd controll abilities.
They also can solo quite good once you learn to use your crowd controll right combined with the pet.
Its just not the easiest class to play, and so there are a lot players that think an illusionist is not that usefull in groups.
1.) They are a more difficult class to master. Along with Coercer, you don't just root and dps, you really got to think about what you're doing and where.
2.) They work against the principle a lot of players are stuck in... pull and burn. Tank pulls, everybody hits their ae's and aoe's and stuff hopefully dies. This isn't the class', or the dev's, fault. It's just how a lot of players think, and play.
The BEST thing about enchanters is that they're there when you pull and burn, and stuff doesn't die . They save your butt almost as much as clerics. Some dungeons almost require an enchanter because of the difficulty, although these are few.
"Granted thinking for yourself could be considered a timesink of shorter or longer duration depending on how smart..or how dumb you are."
the thing that makes enchanters unique is that they really do change quite a bit as you level up, as do their playstyles, the only other classes that do anything like this are the bards. Just look up the skills that illusionists have when they're in the 40s, then you'll get a more realistic view of what they might be like.
I would say illusionist is not a good class to start with as it take a lot of situational awareness and skill to get the most out of but once mastered can be a very enjoyable class to play. If you have already started it you might sideline it for awhile and come back to it later. Of course it also depends on your play style. Some classes are great for soloing but do not add much to grouping while others are a great help to groups. Also some that excel in PVP are less usefull in PVE.

/agree
Illusionists are demanding. A lot of knowlwedge about other classes is needed to be a good Illu. A lot of people dont have a clue about what an enchanter is able to do. Illus are god-like if everyone in group understands and accepts the rules. While playing an Illusionist on "common" raids can be a bit boring there is no sane group entering MMC or Nizara (Those are the hardest group zones available) without one.
I d suggest you take your time and learn the class. You will probably love it. Dont rush it, it takes time. I also always tell others to solo a lot. Best way to learn your profession...

If you like Enchanters, Coercer are more popular mate
