I have been reading quite a bit about Eve on these boards and I hear from both sides, (haters and lovers of the game).
My question is, Is there any room in Eve for someone that is not a huge PvP player? Can one have fun in game by being a trader? A miner? or a craftsman? Do you HAVE to PvP?
Comments
it takes time to play eve you cant just jump in and go about things , to get into a hulk which is the tech / tier 2 mining ship it would take access of 55 -70 days thats if you have learning skills
same goes for building , i have not tried it but it looks really fun
This is just my opinion, but it seemed like the only players having fun in the game were the "pirates" ( make read gankers ). It's a long road to master skills in the game, and your fellow players are not a sympathetic bunch, for the most part ( try getting scammed and then complaining about it on forums or chat, you'll be savaged by the replies. Ouch ).
PVPer's swear by it. I tried it for 5ish months and I found it to be cold and sterile and just generally unfriendly.
For me, I found it lonely for an MMO. The people I came across in chat were generally helpful. But, it lacked a certain something. I think it is a game that you must try to see if you like it however. It's not for everyone, but the people who do like it, seem to love it.

I do a lot of trading on my character as I enjoy the ability to make money while being offline. You can buy and sell remotely, and set up courier contracts which other players can pick up as a sort of fedex mission. Basically you can play the entire game without ever leaving the station and just manage transactions and contracts, if that's your cup of tea.
A basic example would be to buy minerals (mined by other players) remotely, set up a contract for someone to freight it to an industry station, start a remote production, then set up a contract for someone to freight it to wherever you want to sell the finished item.
Obviously there's a lot of money to be saved if you can freight it yourself or have a corp to help you, but I just think it's cool how you can make use of other players in such a way.
You don't have to "kill mobs" or anything for xp, so it's perfectly possible and not uncommon for people to just trade. There are definately corps which are purely pve and only do missions and industry.
Problem you need to overcome is the long lonely early months as newbie low level player.. not many in your range of levels..
If EVE wouldallow lvl 10 characters at start or so .. it could be commercial be a nice marketing push of more players
Have no fear, Xru is here.
A.) No, the pirates and other forms of PvPers are not the only ones having fun. PvE, mining, and trading all have fun aspects, although it takes a particular mindset to really enjoy mining for long periods of time. Crafting on the other hand is only a viable trade for upper echelon players in a well established corp with lots of resources on hand.
B.) Yes, it is worth a try
C.) No, it is not for everyone. If you are particularly impatient, this game is not for you.
A couple of things to keep in mind:
1. get involved in a well established corp quickly, preferably one that complements your playstyle
2. if you hate the game from the start, go ahead and quit. On the other hand, if you are having at least some fun, stick around a little longer. It as a general rule takes a month or two of training skills before people start to really get the full experience.
3. Ask lots of questions, don't be shy. The learning curve in EVE is extremely steep, and much of the community is quite helpful in terms of helping you get started. Again, being in a good corp helps in this regard.
Edit: Oh, and Xrux, they recently allowed characters MUCH more beginning SP than before

You start off with close to 1 million skill points now, and within 2 weeks you can be PvPing other players who have been playing for two years...
If you want to mine, you can do that too.
Yes, the more time invested in the game increases the amount of things open to you, however, newcomers can be completely competitive.

I've heard 100K total SP being reffered to as a single level before, perhaps that is what he means. If so, then he should know that players start off at "level 8"

sure there are the traders, the miners, the manufacturers, but to really get into the game, go for a low security corperation, and PVP, its so much fun, and so strategically challenging...
then, once you hit a certain level you can freelance, become a hired hitman, bounty hunter, or merc etc, just, do whatever you want basically..
but no, you dont HAVE to pvp, you can stay in peaceful corperations, in high <> medium security space, trade, mine, build, run missions, story line missions (yes, there are story lines ) etc... the choice is there, do what you wish

Yes you can have fun in EVE with a industrial game play style. I have multiple accounts some PVP and some industrial. I will tell you though that sooner or later you will want/ have to PvP. You can be attacked anywhere in EVE and will have to learn to defend your self.
Trading isnt has profitable as it used to be. With warp to 0 and invention the regional markets are very competitive. You can still make isk though.
Mining also isnt as profitable as it used to be either. Since drone space was introduced the mineral mrket crashed big time. Ex miners and PvPers rape the drone space, ratting drones instead of actually mining roids for minerals. Although since some larger alliances have been securing that space for themselves, prices have been stabilizing.
Crafting in EVE can be fun. But you will need reserched BPO's to make any real isk. You will never be able to own a tech 2 Bpo unless you can buy it and good luck with that. They arent givin out anymore and would cost a fortune to buy. CCP lets you use invention to make tech 2 items from tech 1 bpo's although it cost more to make that way.
All my buddies who were miners have learned to pvp. Miners are treated as slaves and second class citizens in EVE's hostile enviorment. If your a cearbear you can have fun in EVE if you make some good freinds but I would recomend that you look for another MMO.
I'm planning on making the transition to 0.0 one day though, as I'm told that's where you need to be to really get the full EVE experience.

Holy crap, are you serious?! Will the company spend the money I give them? :O
What an outrage! I'm quitting right now!
On a (slightly, but not entirely) more serious note - this is also an example of people loving to hate CCP. Whatever they do, people will still complain. CCP cheats! Fine, here are screenshots proving we didn't. CCP faked the screenshots and their investigation was biased! Fine, we'll fly in some people from the community to investigate us. CCP waste all their money on flying in people cos they have to be policed!
Give me a break.
But the real point of any game is the game itself, not the forums, and thats where Eve shines. It's not perfect, but its the best space MMO available today, and is getting better and better.
Eve is absoluelty worth a try - and it's the sort of game you will want to play for many years. Stay out of the minority player vs developer poltics because at the end of the day, you have a few hours on the weekend ot have some fun, not worry about the polotics.

Of course, the Caldari race has more 'traditional' faceted and angular designs, but I'd hardly call the amarr and gallente ships "blocky".
Chart over most ships
Here are some in particular where I don't feel "blocky" applies at all.

Once you've gotten a grasp on the game somewhat (couple weeks to a month) try to get into a player corp and try to start doing some PvP. Even if you are just PvPing in a frigate, you will have fun and barely lose anything when you die.
Just buy some ISK or some game trading cards which u sell for ISK and get urself a char from
their forums. Buying GTC for cash and selling for ISK is approved by EVE staff and also
buying chars with game currency.

difficult question;
Just disregard the "waah wahah wahh you need 5 months before you can do anything, just buy a character much better", those are the people who should be playing Counterstrike instead of MMO's, they certainly shouldn't advise you on any MMO as such.
Like all MMO's (and other things too) if you only look ahead into the far future and state very long term goals you'll NEVER have fun in any game, ever. EVE is just about the best when it comes to a non-linear fun factor, there's no max level 70 which you 'need to get in order to have fun'. Ofcourse you start with crappy skills and money (although MUCH better than it was before, you essentially get about 1 month's worth of training on any new character) but THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT!!! If I wanted a short attention span game I'd play a shooter, not an MMO. You need to grow into the game, developing your character, you skills and your friend/foe list along the way.
Essentially the game has little to no rules, so it's all up to you and the other players to do whatever you like, some people can deal with this kind of freedom, others would rather have something more linear where the game holds your hand a bit showing you the ropes and all. EVE caters for the people who THINK before they do and who are prepared to put in effort, it really punishes the lazy, the ones that can't commit themselves. And again, it depends on your own playstyle if you like that or not.
The best way to describe EVE is that you are indeed dumped into space with a very small ship and given 5000 credits IRL, now it's up to you what to do. WHATEVER you might come up with as a possbility IRL (if we would have spaceships and all) you can do in EVE. If you want to trade, that's possible, there's a stock market, you can mine for minerals, you can produce ships, you can solo if you want to but you're way better off in numbers working together, you can be a monopolist, you can be a nasty pirate blowing everyone up, you can be a pirate hunter, you can be a fleet commander, a scout, a damage dealer, a sniper, WHATEVER you want, there's an option for it. And you can do it ALL on one character.
So, your character develops as you play, he can be as focused as you want or as diverse as you want, there's no classes, no racial ship restrictions. In essence it gives you total freedom. Some like it and some don't. Also you need to be aware of things and learn from your mistakes, preferably the first time you make them. It's a difficult game with a steep learning curve, there's no level cap so you can never be 'the best', because of this it has longetivity and your accomplishments will be YOURS and they have an impact on the world around you and on other players.
Doesn't get any better than that.
--- edit ---
On your crafting question, YES! It very much caters for 'crafters' because most of the items and most of the market is player driver. So all aspects ranging from aquiring minerals, moving then (or buying/trading them instead), getting the blueprints to be able to craft an item (and all variables/problems/opportunities that come with that), actually building them and, if you're building something special, defending the factory, then move your produced goods to the market you want to sell it on (whish is different per region, so again, it's about trading, hauling and trying to get the best profit margin).
I's more detailed, has more variables and is the most realistic 'crafting' you'll find. Compare it to living in South Africa where they have those gold mines ( I believe it was gold) and you're producing gold items. You'll have to mine the gold, protect yourself while mining, move the ore and protect that as well, then produce the goods, then move the products and make sure you don't get mugged while doing so and then fidning the right market for it and sell it. It's THAT complex.
