This is why I like games which have a lot of races, it gives you a lot of choices and some unique races to play. Everquest 2 has, I think, 18 races now, so if I want I can play a dwarf, halfling, different types of elves, or I can play something unique like the catpeople, Kerrans, ratonga the small ratlike race, the Iksar lizards, hulking ogres (my favorite), fae or arasai, tiny winged fairies, or the croaking, hopping frogloks. Lots of choices are good!

I am curious what everyone here thinks about it.
Should developers try to be more creative and come up with their own races or just reuse that which is already overused?

Actually humans are the most over used race in any computer game.

I'm so sick and tired of humans and they all look stupid too.

    Down with humans!

I saw a race once that was both original and hilarious.

    "Beast Pixie"

Come to think: It was plain dumb........

DAOC now and off the bat had alot more then that , but in that game and many otehr it feels like race matters little ... not sure if this is good or bad.

Saga of Ryzom uses unique races. CoSB will only have two races, and one is unique. Final Fantasies races are unique, even though a couple resemble the standards a lot. I'm not sure, but isn't Guild Wars pretty much human only?
So there are games with their own specific races lore. It's just a feeling with familiarity as the Tolkien lore is pretty well known.

Lol yea, I dreamed about male dwarves last night....

I'm afraid we can't get away from that one though. LOL

I agree with an earlier poster that it helps if a game that employs these kinds of races actually focuses more on the lore that comes with them. It seems like that focus is gradually diminishing, or perhaps it is the way it is told.

I still prefer to see exciting new ideas, much like what was in FFXI (minus the Elvaan).

When it comes to playing animal characters, I would imagine they might use anthropomorphic qualities, maybe giving the option to play on four legs. Either that or make them shapeshifters. Both would be kind of interesting.
