No love from Google, so I need to tap the brainiacs out there.
Years ago as a child I heard a bunch of stories, I can't remember from where, but it was told in an "oral tradition" style. I'm trying to find the source of it.
It goes that eons ago dogs could talk. The dog met man, and asked him to come hunting with him one night. Man told the dog his cave was cold and he couldn't see at night. Man knew of fire, but couldn't get to the fire made by lightning during a storm before the rain put it out. The dog found some and ran back with it on a burning branch and gave it to man, but the fire burned his throat and the dog lost the ability to talk. In payment, man now takes care of the dog, and they have been friends ever since.
There was a similar story told to me at the same time about horse and man needing to do some task togeather, but the horse had to carry man on his back becasue the horse is faster, but man never let the horse go after that.
Why am I looking for this? It popped into my head at 4 in the morning. I've spent over 2 hours looking it up. Not knowing where the story came from is killing me. I can't even recall from where I heard the story. May have been from some Native American family members I met as a child. May have come from an old elementary school textbook in the late 70's. There is also a chance it was written by a scifi writter. I'm not sure it's even a old myth, as "man living in a cold cave" sounds like a modern invention. There is a Maya myth Google turned up about dog bringing man fire, but it was only a reference.
Please help!

I can't say that I've ever heard either of those but they almost sound like they could be authentic folklore. Except for the thing about man living in a cave. I agree with you that that part seriously calls into question whether it is old folklore or something a modern day writer came up with.
But who knows. I'm sure that quite a lot of old stories and folk-wisdom have been lost and forgotten before anyone ever recorded it for posterity. As we leave the low tech days further and further behind all of that stuff fades further and further into obscurity. My grandparants (all dead now) grew up at the tail end of the horse and buggy days. One of my grandmothers taught me a sort of magic charm to get rid of warts when I was a kid. Heh, that sort thing is probably pretty rare these days unless your family are wickens or some new age types.
The first story is a Greek story. I will find it and edit what I find about it into this post. BRB.
Maybe it's not Greek lol. Damn I remember this story. Wonder if my 3rd grade teacher is alive she would remember it.
This is what I could find so far. Pretty funny story.

In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.
